For real.  UCF lost to Stetson.

I set in The Pavilion last year and watched an average UCF team dominate Ole Miss in every aspect of the game so this game will see how they’ve turned it around from that. Is State a bad team since they lost to Southern?

Just saw the ending of the OM game and holy smokes, what a mess that almost was. What was the inbound guy thinking?

Still, huge road win. Ole Miss looks to have a direct path to an undefeated nonconference schedule which is quite an accomplishment if they take care of business the next couple of weeks.

I knew it would be a battle but I’m glad I was wrong on the outcome. Def tried to give it away down the stretch with some sloppy play and poor foul shooting. 33% from the line in last minute and half plus four turnovers in the last 50 secs. Gotta get better not allowing second chance points. UCF dominated the offensive rebounds grabbing 18 almost tripling Ole Miss’ total. Eliminate those and this could’ve been a comfy double digit win. Lucky to get out of there with the W but a win is a win especially on the road as +3.5 underdog.

NET update after the weekend, State is back up to 30, Ole Miss has climbed all the way up to 64.

Starting to feel like at worst you’ve got two NIT teams in the state this year and you may have two NCAAT teams.

State has Jekyll and Hyde tendencies that are concerning. Ole Miss I’m just not sure yet what they can do in a strong SEC. But either way this looks like one of the more interesting college basketball seasons we’ve had in a while around here. Both teams have shown plenty to be encouraged by.

Saw where Ole Miss is now ranked in the Top 25. Don’t think anyone had that on their bingo card. It’s crazy how much they remind me of State from a year ago.

The SEC in general is just deep this year. LSU and Vandy seem like they will struggle based on early results. Everyone else seems at least somewhat dangerous.

The portal can speed a rebuild up.  I think Beard’s teams, like Jan’s’, will play with max effort.   Both are also good at having guys play roles.

I think picking up Flanigan was big for Beard.  He’s a veteran player who has played a lot of games.  OM also added some length and athleticism.

Ole Miss has also won A LOT of close games so far. Which is either a great trait to have or a sign that some of those are due to go the other way before long. Time will tell.

I checked State’s score not long ago and they were up 68-49.  A few minutes later I read State was up 82-81.

State won 84-81 against Murray State, but dang.   Murray State shot 52% from 3.

Yeah I have no idea what to make of State. One day they can’t score, the next day they can’t miss. One day they are elite on defense, the next day they’re struggling mightily to get a stop against a bad team.

Murray State is a bad team but they have historically been a strong program over the years.
Our team seemingly can’t stand prosperity. Should have been an easy win but then you go all the way from 19 points up to a point down with under two minutes to go.

Glad to get the win but 83 you are correct in the inconsistency of this team. I am sure that is driving Coach Jans nuts.
The saving grace is the talent is there and the ceiling is much higher for this team. Hopefully we will see more consistency going forward.

The good news for State is Tolu is being cleared to fully practice tomorrow. Sounds like he should definitely be back by the start of SEC play and potentially sooner. Maybe you see him in time for the Rutgers or Bethune Cookman games? I would be surprised if he plays in the game in Tupelo on Sunday.

With him and Bell being able to rotate in the middle, they are going to be a tough match up for opposing teams around the goal.
Dang Bell looks like a brick wall. But for his size he seems to have good agility.

Yeah Bell is up and down as a starter but should be a really nice number two center.

Upon further review, Murray State is better than their 3-7 record indicates. All but one of their losses have been inside 10 points.
Now there is still no excuse to blow a 19 point lead other than we got lackadaisical in the second half.

Rutgers appears to be a solid team and a win over them would be good. Their RPI is 91 and they are a P5 opponent.

State’s best win right now is that Washington State win. Northwestern took a bad loss yesterday and has tumbled quite a bit in the NET. Arizona State and Tulane may be decent teams but are currently outside the Top 100.

I’m of the opinion that State needs to win each of their remaining nonconference games to stay on the right postseason track. Losing to a SWAC team gives you no wiggle room otherwise.

That said, there will be plenty of opportunities to get quality wins in SEC play. State’s first month of conference games is ridiculously tough.

Ole Miss moves to 10-0 with a 88-78 win over Cal.

Cal is a bad team.

There are a couple of "decent wins" so far, but nothing to say this IS a tournament team.

10-0 is the best Ole Miss fans could hope for (obviously), we'll see how it plays out.

Best W/L record in the SEC

The Memphis win looks even better today with them beating #13 previously unbeaten Clemson and NC State playing Tennessee tough early on. I took some heat last week about being skeptical before the UCF game but I’m not getting my hopes up cuz I know the WAOM moment is lingering around the corner.
