The conference record looks bad but I like the direction we are going. Coach Jans is a good coach.
We have three losses that could have easily been wins. Close but no cigar to this point.

TN is probably another loss especially since they lost to KY at home. I was hoping they would win that game. Just need to keep playing strong D and eventually the offense will line up the stars and we will shoot well from the 3 point line, inside the arc and at the FT line.

State was much more competitive with Tennessee than they were a few weeks ago, but still came up short. Close game until late in the second half when UT just got scorching hot from 3, I think they were something like 8 for 9 in the second half. And several of those were contested shots.

Must win for State against Florida on Saturday if they want to keep any postseason hopes alive, no doubt about it. They’re almost through the brutal part of the schedule but games like the one Saturday are ones they need to be winning.

I wasn’t sure OM would pick up a road SEC win this year, so that’s a positive.

I wasn't sure if OM would pick up an SEC win period this year. I figured 3 wins somewhere, but a road win gives some hope it won't be THAT bad of a year.

Right now, I'd put the over/under of SEC wins for OM at 3 maybe 4 wins.

There's still plenty of the season left, but I do lean towards OM/USC/MSU will finish bottom 3 in the SEC.

I’m a little more optimistic on State than some, I think they can string some wins together once they get to February. But it’s not crazy to think they end up being a bottom four team.

Bottom 4 is probably a better guess than bottom 3. Bottom 6 isn't out of the question.

The current bottom 6 in the SEC are:

Vandy (1-3 vs ranked teams). Vandy has 2 SEC wins vs 1 each for the below.

USC (0-1 vs ranked teams)

LSU (1-2 vs ranked teams)

MSU (0-4 vs ranked teams)

Arkansas (2-3 vs ranked teams)

OM (0-3 vs ranked teams)

Arkansas probably works out of the bottom 6, LSU and Vandy show some potential to work up.

It's a long season and tons can happen, I'm just not seeing much from OM/USC/MSU to work far up at all from bottom 3 or 4.

Florida is currently 6th in the SEC, I expect them to fall to the bottom 5... maybe lower. They do have 3 SEC wins so these bottom 6 have work to do to pass UF.

State drops a close game at home to Florida. That probably puts an end to any slim NCAAT hopes barring something crazy. This team just doesn’t have much to work with on offense.

It's still early, but a loss that leaves MSU tied for bottom 3 in the SEC.

Ole Miss got whipped by Arkansas today also to remain in the bottom 3, no surprise there.

And State plays two Top 15 teams this coming week with Bama and TCU. Lol.

That was a devastating loss last night. Really needed that one. I still like this team and really like Coach Jans. Team just desperately needs to win a game to gain some confidence. Just a tough situation right now. But not giving up on this group. Season can still be successful.
I know it sounds crazy but Bama is due for an off game and we are due for some good fortune. Maybe we can pull off a win in Tuscaloosa Tuesday night. Not likely but I would not be surprised if we did just that.

No worries there. State can’t make a layup much less a three pointer. When State and Ole Miss play, first team to twenty-one (oops 50) wins.
Even though it may take 50 minutes (Regulation plus two overtime’s) to get there…LOL.

All joking aside, I am disheartened for Coach Davis and Ole Miss. Even though the conference records mirror each other, the two programs seem to be going in opposite directions.

Is Kermit so bad now that he's making Andy Kennedy look good?  Was Andy Kennedy the Jeff Bower of Ole Miss Basketball?

Kennedy was a decent coach in a terrible era for SEC basketball. When the rest of the league improved, he couldn’t keep pace anymore. The NIT is only good enough for so long, AK simply didn’t get to the NCAAT enough

Kermit’s situation is odd, and I’m not really sure why it’s flopped so badly after a promising start. The league is definitely better than it was a decade ago. But he’s had good enough players to win more than he has.

I do worry about the state of college hoops in Mississippi and if this is just kinda what it will always be. Historically that’s pretty much the truth. Other than a few flash in the pan years, this is not a great basketball state. And the MS high school ranks are not producing high caliber prospects at the rate they once did, either. I’m also not sure I foresee there being enough NIL commitment for basketball in this state. I mean we can debate all day long whether this should be the case or not, but college baseball is far more popular in Mississippi and I think that doesn’t necessarily help men’s hoops.

Hate to be bleak but it’s a legitimate concern of mine. I am genuinely shocked that Kermit has been this much of a flop. And I think Chris Jans is a great coach but worry about recruiting and player procurement in his case.

I’m not sure the status quo changes much unless men’s basketball becomes more of a priority for these programs.

If State could have cut down on the fouls and mustered up a little bit more offense, they would have won this game.

Posted this on another board but worth mentioning here:

With 16 minutes to go in the second half, State was up by 10 points and had committed zero fouls.

State was then called for 8 fouls in the span of 4 minutes, including a stretch where they were called for 3 fouls in 2 SECONDS.

I’m not usually a blame the officials guy but the zebras in this one totally ruined the flow of the game for State. The foul call on McNair on the Miller three attempt was atrocious.

Yes I’m right there with you on that foul call on McNair.  That was a clean block and it’s a shame the officiating is the way that it is, but it’s hard to win a game playing against two opponents.  I know there’s no such a thing as a moral victory, but I’m proud of State’s effort tonight.  I just hope Jans can find some reincarnated Winsome Fraziers and Ravern Johnsons.  Another Mario Austin and Lawrence Roberts won’t hurt either.
