Vott
Just read about a coach in Oregon getting fired for doing an onside kick in a 63-0 win with the kick coming in the 2nd qtr and his team up 56-0. Without naming the school or schools, do you think there are any A.D."s or superintendents in Mississippi who would do the same thing and fire a coach for doing that? And did that coach deserve it? pancho
Yes, there are probably some who would cave to an influential parent.
Chunky6617
Yes the coach deserved it. Glad he was fired. And yes there are some in Mississippi who would do it if they could.

pancho
lots of very soft non competitors out there today. play the game and keep all the personal feelings at the house.

While we are assuming, I’m going to assume you probably coach a 7u or 8u youth league team and that makes you think that you are a really big deal, like a “real” coach.

You honestly think that's a justification for losing your job in a competition based occupation?
pancho
this is as stupid as griping that a no no was busted up due to a successful bunt. Play the game start to finish. Nick Saban would be irate at all the softness in display.

Not for a first offense. After you’ve been warned to show class and sportsmanship and you continue to do the opposite, then you get fired. Rebel Bert
Is it bad sportsmanship to pull your starting place kicker off the field at 42-0 for a freshman who can't kick 20 yards or do you kick deep with your starter when they field the ball at the 5 and fail to get to the 12 yard line. Could it be that bad. What do you do when your up 40 and McLaurin center has done a marvelous job of hiking the ball all night over the qb and punters head. And I Orleans on 98% of the plays. The other 2% was the qb running for his life. Sometimes your bad football team and third string scores 2 tds on you.
FBdude
Shouldn’t be fired but kicking an onside kick while up 40 something to nothing is crap. Some coaches forget that it isn’t that hard to win with a loaded roster.
David44
It would be prudent to hear this coach's side of the story. Maybe he wanted to practice his kickoff team on executing and recovering an onside kick for bigger games that come later. Who knows. If so, he probably should have done it at 14-0 or 21-0. Wouldn't have looked so bad and he had to know very early in this game it was going to be a blowout. It's also possible that a special teams coach called it on his own, and the head coach didn't know it was coming. But as others stated above, if this was his very 1st offense of bad sportsmanship, this firing was not justified.

pancho
Heck, maybe the opposing HC had fired this HC at a previous stop. It could be anything really but one thing is certain that folks are soft and complain.
Chunky6617
There is ZERO justification for kicking onside kicks and purposely trying to run up the score when you are already up 50 points. There is no justification. One of the biggest problems right now with youth sports and high school sports are coaches with egos who disregard sportsmanship. You can blow a team out and still do it with good sportsmanship. For a first offense, the coach should be warned. After that, send them packing if they do it again.
Rebel Bert
Did the administration warn him during the game, before or after and was this happening before this game. What was the beef?
pancho
This had to be a buddy stephens type deal where this was the last straw
NoWammies
When’s the best time to practice an onside kick against live competition other than practice when they know it’s coming? Sounds to me like had the other team recovered they would’ve had better field position than they normally did. In the words of Bill Parcells-“Do I have to coach the other team too?”

And if you are beating a team 56-0 in the 2nd quarter, you aren’t learning anything about your onside kick team that you would if you did against JV in practice. The coach and the team weren’t trying to “practice” their onside kick. They were intentionally trying to run up the score. Anyone who tries to justify it is wasting their breath. Their is zero justification
NoWammies
He did it when it was 28-0 too. 56-0 was the 2nd time. Both times the kick went right to the opposing player and he muffed it. The kid make a play and it’s a moot point with good field position.
s1nglewing
Kind of irrelevant to me as this was in Oregon, but it isn't something I'd ever consider doing. Certainly showed the classless character of the coach.
KOshooter
I've never known of a coach being fired for running up the score, but I do know a supt who would question a HC after a huge margin of victory, say 68-0. He wouldn't question him in an accusatory fashion, just sort of "Hey, what happened? Were they that terrible?" His district had several schools, so he couldn't be at every game & be familiar with the opponents of each team, so he would ask questions. Rebel Bert
In Mississippi the MHSAA tie breaker #4 for playoff seeding actually if I understand it correctly is totally points scored in region play. So running up the score sometimes works out or benefits at least one school. #5 Goes to a coin toss. Administration needs to understand there is a reason you have to beat an opponent by 41 vs another region opponent just beat them last week by 40. So if you beat a team by 50 and that team you beat 50 comes to a tiebreaker it will say you only beat them by 12.
