I do not see how this was the right move at all. He did not recruit well at USM. Whiffed on HS (or did not recruit them) and Portal players left and right. Surely there were better options out there? Did they not reach out to call anyone? As a Tulane alum and former player, this hire pisses me off. I like Will Hall. I think he is a good assistant coach, but he proved he was not ready for being a head coach at the FBS level. I would have rather promoted Craddock (OC) and Gasparato (DC)

Just focus on that Gulfport win.  That was chef's kiss good.  Stay on cloud 9 for a while cuz y'all earned it.

It seemed that Hall did a good job down there as the OC. He was very good in the Gulf South at Livingston and West Georgia. Unfortunately USM  is in a bad position. They hit the jackpot with Huff but only for one year.
I actually think he will do well at Tulane where he has more resources.

Bumphis is out in starkville and Holecek might be next

Holecek may one of the most nondescript assistant coaches State has ever had. If he’s gone, I guess that’s fine. I don’t know the first thing about him and don’t feel that he’s made that strong of an impression at all.

Some people are very upset about the Bumphis thing… I personally think it depends on the next hire but I’m not sure I was ever sold on him being that great. I don’t think he’s a bad coach but I always felt like his impact in recruiting and development was very overrated. State has had a ton of HS receivers not pan out in the last few years, and I”m not sure that Chad was super involved in some of the transfers they’ve brought in.

I hope there are other staff changes to come too, this was the weakest coaching staff in the SEC the last two years and it needs to be shaken up quite a bit. Sounds like Bumphis is UNLV bound for a reunion with Mullen.

State people tend have blinders on when it comes to former players who are in coaching. People mostly remember Bumphis as our best WR in the early Mullen era and somehow conflate that with he’s been a really good coach too. I like Chad as a person but I just don’t see it that way.

Anyone else surprised at Golding’s contract? $6.8 million seems quite high for a “never been a head coach” type of hire that certainly would come with some risk.

I guess when you put it in the context of he’s about the 4th lowest paid coach in the league even at $6.8 million, it doesn’t seem as bad. I’m not sure what Clark Lea’s new salary at Vandy is, he may be making more than Golding. But otherwise I believe Lebby, Silverfield, and Stein would be the only coaches making less than Pete.

Assuming Lea got a big raise, Lebby is probably the lowest paid coach in the league with room to spare…. But hard to argue with it given his record through two years.
