I know for a fact he is bringing six coaches with him.

He has spoken to 4 coaches from OS:

DC- Accepted and has told his defensive staff

OL- from what is being rumored turned down the position

OC- rumors are he wants to stay but has no other option currently

WR- is undecided but consensus is that he takes the position

I didn't say who or where they are coming from.  But he is absolutely bringing six coaches with him.

You are a glass completely full guy David and I respect that. However, the success of the middle school program has been because of Pennock. The 8th grade coach is only in his 2nd year and was brought in by Pennock. He has streamlined that program from top to bottom and if you look at their successes, especially lately, he is a big part of that in my opinion. As far as players leaving, be careful in thinking they will not go anywhere. You can have all the nice things and facilities in the world but if the players do not trust their coaches or get along with them, they will not stick around. Transferring today in high school football is a really, really easy thing to

Pennock coached the middle school teams too?

Good head coaches put their guys in position and coordinate the offensive and defensive game plans to mesh with what he’s doing at the next level. Pennock did that along with the AD. Any new hire would hopefully pick up that line of thought.

Don’t doubt what you’re saying, but ironically, the 8th grade team is the weakest link in the program. Probably not fair to those kids and players to point that out, so I might delete the comment soon

The 8th grade went undefeated and won the championship during the 2021 season correct? May be more to do with talent level than coaching level.

Now that I’ve had a minute to get over being jilted by that guy that used to coach in O.S., I’d like to point out a couple of things. Sure, I can’t blame him for doing better for his family and all that, but going right down the road, taking assistants with him, and supposedly talking with players and parents about joining him just seems…unseemly. But, let’s move on and wait for next November.

Whoever is making the decision in O.S. as to the next coach will by definition not be an athletically  knowledgeable person or body. The long standing AD is gone, and the superintendent is halfway out the door. That’s why I’m saying there are two routes to go here. First, bring in a knowledgeable person with local ties and statewide experience who can evaluate the options for hiring a current coach or leading assistant at another school in the state or in a nearby state. Second, evaluate the assistant coaches on the present staff at O.S., and reach out to that coach to maintain continuity with the program and with the players who were counting on their coaches staying around. My choice would be the one running that world class offense, calling the plays, and putting players in position to have one of the highest performing offenses in the state. The current assistants all seem to admire and work with him, and some have hinted privately  that they support his hiring. The delay in making that choice would seem to be telling. Time’s ticking. Just wish we could be confident that there’s a plan in place.

David i think part of the problem is that the head football coach at Ocean Springs is not a teaching position. It is an administrator. They also serve as the assistant athletic director. From what I was told yesterday the requirements include a minimum of one year head coaching experience and a degree in administration.

I wasn’t aware of that. Does seem like a technicality that could be bypassed or an alternative worked out. I would think that any head coach would like to have that assistant AD position so as to have input on decisions. Are these common requirements, because I’ve seen other schools bring in deserving assistant coaches without those things on their resume. Maybe naming an interim AD would allow for some leeway.

Depends on the district. It’s also a way to up the pay from my understanding. St Martin for example the baseball coach is the asst AD.

Ocean Springs, while a vibrant and growing city attracting families, has a weak business tax base.  No industry, only small business/restaurant dollars mostly filling the coffers.

Whoa, I thought for a second you were talking about Picayune, but then I saw the vibrant and growing part. 🤣

Does not technically have to have either but, it is preferred depending on who is doing the hiring.  Head coach typically receives additional salary by receiving an Asst. AD title.  I believe the money is not the problem.  It is the certain people on the school board, that either have a personal vendetta or care nothing about athletics, are making decisions about the future of an athletic program.  How can we be assured that they are making decisions in our children's best interest when I hear that they say things as I do not care anything about Football?  My fear is that they want to hire from their network of friends and will accept mediocrity as long as it fits their own agenda.  This school board is not a diverse representation of Ocean Springs is.  The 3 board members knew this was their agenda to push certain administrators out and the strain that would put on a successful program but yet choose to not act quickly to alleviate the issue.  How does that make sense?
