Rebounding was atrocious and then Davis with a terrible turnover when we actually had a chance to tie or win the game. We are not there yet with the mental (not just physical ) toughness to win these types of games on the road. That was the hallmark of CRW and CRS teams in the 1990’s and in the 2000’s. I do think this team is capable there but today was a setback. As I said it is one game but it was a game we needed to win. State bought in to the blue collar mentally Jans requires last year. I haven’t seen that the few games I watched this year. I didn’t see today’s game, but there doesn’t seem to be the same intensity.

The other problem is Hubbard is the only person on the team that can make a jump shot.
Dawg83
If this was the first or second loss it wouldn’t be as big of a deal but that Southern loss I keep harping on just shrinks the margin for error a lot. 17 games left in the regular season so clearly there’s time to get right. But missed opportunities like this that you let slip away can add up if you’re not careful. Feels like State has to get a home win against Tennessee or Bama this coming week. You’re really behind the eight ball again if you don’t. And I’ve mentioned the first four SEC games a lot but it’s not like it stops there. State also has to travel to Gainesville, Oxford, and Tuscaloosa in the next month, plus hosts Auburn. You’re just gonna have to win multiple tough games in this stretch and the one today was frankly one of the more winnable ones on paper. NoWammies
Not to jinx it but USM currently up 6 on undefeated #19 JMU with lil over 7 mins left. JMU has cut a 15 point deficit down to 6 though.

Dawg83
Ole Miss hung tough for a while but it’s gotten away from them. To be fair, they started out conference play with arguably the toughest game possible this year.
NoWammies
Regardless of tonight’s outcome, from what I’ve seen today Ole Miss is a top five SEC team and will easily be a tournament team.

Tournament team, I could see, but not gonna be easy. Top 5 in the league? Gonna be tough. That applies for Ole Miss and for State. Tennessee, Kentucky, Auburn are the best three, in my opinion. Gonna be a bit of a log jam after that with a ton of toss up games to be played. State and OM likely fall somewhere in that log jam. Not as good as the top teams but definitely better than the worst of the league. The SEC could feasibly put 8 or 9 teams in the NCAAT this year. NoWammies
Other than Hubbard, State has absolutely no backcourt that can create their own shot nor make a jumper. They were beat by a USC team that’ll prob finish around 8-10th in the SEC. The two best teams I’ve seen today is Tennessee and Auburn. Auburn put the conference on notice today. Ole Miss was just beat on the road by the best in the SEC. I can live with tonight. It’s what was needed. Florida was benefited today by a crazy home crowd leading their team and should’ve beat a very young Kentucky team that has bunch of weaknesses yet still fell short. Kentucky will struggle against more balanced teams especially with a physical frontcourt. Kentucky looked like Ole Miss. Excellent in transition off of mistakes but struggled in set offense. Again, Ole Miss is a top five team in the SEC.

NoWammies
Feel free to name other teams besides Tennessee, Auburn and Kentucky that’ll fill the top five.
NoWammies
And btw that’s how I’ve felt having to read books of a status about a team that lost to Southern at home but I did and shrugged it off.

There’s been one weekend of SEC play. There are the three obvious teams that have been talked about all season so far plus preseason. After that nobody has proven anything, but you saw enough from Ole Miss TODAY in a 26 point loss to say they’re easily top 5 and a tournament team? And I’m not saying OM isn’t a top 5 team, but that wouldn’t have been my take from a 26 point loss. Maybe a 6 point back and forth, but they were outscored by 9 the first half and 17 the second. As for State, you’ll have to take that up with the people that wrote books hyping them up.
NoWammies
I watched 2 7 foot guys consistently not block out. I watched guys off the ball watching the ball allowing their guys to move without the ball leading to wide open shots. It’s things a Beard type defense normally doesn’t allow and I’m sure will be addressed.

If both of those guys can stay out of foul trouble, that length combined with OM’s frontcourt could give people problems. They have a couple guys that can score. A&M, Bama, Florida, maybe State depending on which State team shows up most of SEC play. I know State lost today but they’ve played dang good basketball at times this year against a not terrible schedule. Bad at times too, but they have some solid wins. They are still going to be problem for most teams with their defense. Like last year, gonna have to make some shots in key moments to do much on the whole. I still have no idea what Ole Miss is. Getting blasted in the first SEC game didn’t help me figure anything out either. The fact that Beard is a very good coach makes me think probably bubble team. Top 5 in the SEC means you’re like a 5 or 6 seed in the NCAAT most likely. I’m not sure I believe they are THAT good. I still think State has the higher ceiling this year just because Hubbard is capable of getting on a major heater and I’ve seen the rest of this group grind their way into big wins before. I don’t think either of these two teams are Sweet 16 or better type of teams. Not right now.

I don’t know what you want me to tell you. State was an NCAAT team that brought back all five starters and added a dynamic freshman scorer. They were ranked too for a couple of weeks. The Southern loss is objectively terrible and no one has pretended otherwise. But they’ve also played really well at times too. They play a style that’s sometimes tough to watch but has yielded good results too. Jans’ track record speaks for itself. There’s room for nuanced takes. It’s not always as simple as “my team good, rival team bad”.
NoWammies
For one I think we’re overvaluing the SEC. It’s a good conference this year but not a great conference. It might just be that there’s so much parody in all of the NCAA this year. No conference has really stuck out as being above and beyond. The ACC is down compared to recent years, so is the Big 10. Big East is usually a decent conference but they’re hard to gauge so far. Bama struggled today against a bad Vandy team and A&M is struggling at home against a bad LSU team. I just think it’s easier to be a top five SEC team than one might expect.

Florida at Ole Miss is a big game on Wednesday too. UF played Kentucky really close at home today, led for a good chunk of the game. I think they’re a quality team. NoWammies
Wednesday is def a huge game and could make or break whether I sound stupid or not. Tonight just reminded me of the Georgia football game. Team thinking they were ready but the bright lights, home crowd and a team on a mission caused it to be lopsided. Our bigs weren’t ready and didn’t show an ounce of physicality. Guards too busy watching the ball allowing their guy to move without the ball causing open shots. Also too many back door screens that never adjusted to. Let’s not forget I was an Ole Miss doubter earlier in the season. I now see all the potential we have as a TEAM. Gotta play together as a TEAM though.

Dawg83
I don’t think Tennessee is a good matchup for State, but hey it’s in Starkville and you never know. Home vs away seems to matter more in basketball than any sport. I think State beats SC by 8 to 10 points when they make the return trip to Starkville later in the year. And OM probably still loses to UT if they played Oxford but I doubt it’s that lopsided Same reason I pretty much expect State to lose to OM in Oxford and win in Starkville. That seems to be how it happens most years, anyway, State swept last year but it still took OT to beat a bad team in Oxford.
