The hotter that Winsome got with his 3 point shooting, the further out he would get from the 3 point line. He would make NBA 3 pointers look like a 2 point jump shot, no lie. Bulldogs4
Wiley Peck from the late 70’s was known as the “Chairman of the Boards” Great player and rebounder. Kentucky’s Tshiebwe reminds of Wiley Peck. Strong as an ox and has a nose for the basketball when it comes off the rim.
Bulldogs4
State 65 Akron 47 5 minutes left playing very well so far in the second half.
Bulldogs4
State 73 Akron 54 final Good win against another NCAAT team. Long way go but two games in, State is playing hard on the defense end. Tonight shooting was better as well. Go Dawgs!!!
Dawg83
That was a pretty impressive win for State. Second half adjustments appear to be a strength for Jans, can’t remember the last time that was the case for a State coach. Two games, two comfortable wins over NCAAT teams from last year. Very good start to the Jans era so far.
Bulldogs4
Plus I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jim Ellis and Coach Williams call the game on the radio. CRW is so knowledgeable about the game. He has great insights in to the game. He also warned us about Arkansas-Pine Bluff. They lost OT to TCU by one. Lost to Okie by 8. They are a decent team. Dawg83
It’s SUPER early but Lunardi has both State and Ole Miss as bubble teams as of today.
Dawg83
State with another impressive win last night, 4-0 now. We will start to really find out about this team in the Fort Myers tourney next week. They’ll play Marquette on Monday and then either Utah or Georgia Tech. None of those teams are ranked but it will still be a good barometer for where State is. If they manage to go 2-0 in those games you’ve got to feel really good about things in Year 1 of a new coach. I think most would take 1-1 and be fine with it though.

I know I'm excited for both our men's and women's teams.
maroontide06
I know the women lost the other night, but there's really no shame in that because they are still trying to figure things out and South Dakota State was not an easy place to play. At least they fought to the very end and gave themselves a chance to win. It's good to see that kind of effort from our women's program. I think they'll turn the corner sooner rather than later. Dawg83
It’s going to be hard for State’s women to ever recapture the lightning in a bottle they had with Schaefer, but I think Purcell can definitely do well. The issue is that Schaefer came along in a time where a power shift was happening in the SEC and took advantage of that opening. Purcell has to deal with South Carolina at the height of their powers. Dawg83
State grinds out a big win against Marquette. The Jans era is off to as good of a start as you could realistically ask for. They’ll play Utah in a couple of days now.
Bulldogs4
Free Throws almost did us in. We finally hit some at the very end to seal the deal. Great effort and defense and rebounding won this game tonight. Definitely like what I see through five games. Team is having fun and playing with enthusiasm. Dawg83
I’ll be honest, did not have high expectations for State this year. Thought the offense would be a major problem and it would take a year or two for Jans to get his defense installed. The offense is still a big work in progress but man, this team plays defense at a super high level. Haven’t allowed more than 55 points in game to this point. That kind of D can mask a lot of offensive issues you may have. Edited November 22, 2022 by Dawg83
Dawg83
State beats Utah 52-49 to win the Fort Myers tournament. I hope you like rock fights because you’re gonna see a lot of them involving State this year. It can be UGLY on offense at times but they are just so dang gritty on defense and keep finding ways to win. Next two games are against a couple of really bad teams at home, so take care of business and you should be 8-0 going into a road game at Minnesota in a couple of weeks. Bulldogs4
FT’s again were terrible 9-16 17-67 from the floor. But defense was awesome and offensive rebounding was huge. Davis and Tolu carried the team. You have to think the offense will get better as the season goes along. 83, you are right , the grittiness of this team is just refreshing so far. Hopefully that will continue. And Utah is normally a very good team.
maroontide06
That was one crazy basketball game. The defense is spectacular, but we couldn’t buy a 2 pt field goal with good credit LOL! Great game by Deshawn Davis & Tolu Smith. I really like the competitiveness of this team and they don’t quit.

Dawg83
I like Davis a lot, maybe he gets lost in the shuffle on a better offensive team but for this team he can be a huge spark that they don’t really have otherwise. Tolu is just one of the better old school big guys around right now. He doesn’t have a ton of offensive versatility but he can be an absolute monster in the post. Jeffries is what he is, just gonna be up and down. Matthews is improved but still more of a defense guy. Gotta get Shak Moore going and hope that he can be another shooter that defenses have to respect. He had a brutal shooting night tonight, but he’s shown flashes of being good since he’s been here. Or maybe someone like Tyler Stevenson gets going, he was a pretty reliable scorer at USM.
Dawg83
Saw a stat this morning that State/OM/USM are a combined 17-0 in men’s basketball right now. Dang.

Dawg83
First NET rankings came out today and State is 5th. Wow. Those Marquette and Utah wins may end up being huge as the season goes on. I don’t think this team is “win the SEC” good but they are definitely better than I expected them to be and have put themselves in a really nice spot to make the NCAAT if they can just hold serve most of the season. Win the games you’re supposed to and a couple of home toss ups and you’ll be dancing. USM at 31 is pretty impressive too. Ole Miss is 66, not great but not terrible. Dawg83
State has a fairly big road game at Minnesota on Sunday night. MN is not great but it’s a true road game so you can’t take it for granted. State is now ranked in the Top 25 of the AP Poll which just continues to stun me. Looking at how the beginning of SEC play starts, State really got hosed on the schedule this year. Two of their biggest home games (Alabama and Ole Miss) will be in late December and early January before students are back on campus. MSTSatchmo
I just noticed Bama is at #8 and they play #1 Houston Saturday. UNC was the preseason #1, and they aren’t in the Top25 now. It could be an odd season. The SEC has #7,8, and 9.
