pancho
the kids practice daily out in the heat and the junior high will still play at 530 during the week. I say it is much a do about absolutely nothing.
maroontide06
Every game used to start at 7:30 anyways. It was like that when I was in school and frankly it would probably be a good idea to start the games at 7:30 while they still have the heat timeouts. I also miss being able to say, "High Tide @ 7:30" LOL!
pancho
I agree, maroontide06 but why nothing at all about the heat during practice each day or for the junior high games during the week? this is a "feel good about themselves" moment for the mhsaa

The appeasement is probably for the fans more than anything, but 30 minutes one way or the other doesn't really amount to a hill of beans. If they do away with the standard time like they're supposed to next year and keep the daylight savings time all year there might be an argument to move some of the games back to 7:30. Now as far as the junior high games they could definitely move those back to like 7:00 because you literally fry at those games.
pancho
Like I said, this is simply a "feel good moment" for the folks in charge and they think they did somebody a favor.
ccbulldog
all games up until daylight savings time ends in Oct. should be at 7:30. Once it ends then you can go to 7 pm kicks. Heck, in late aug. early sept. it wouldn't even get dark until halftime. That's no good. I hated it when games were moved up to 7pm.

If you were a photographer, you'd be advocating 6 PM kickoffs.
TigersFan
They tried this a few years ago and come to find out it made no difference in the outcome. Like someone else said they practice mid afternoon. Jr. High and Jv can play before that and not suffer any effects I guess the MHSAA feels. This really made no since to me when I seen it on the news the other night, but typical of the MHSAA!
Guntriple
The MHSAA actually did put out recommendations that anytime the heat index is 105 or above practice be moved indoors or something like that is what I heard. The 7:30 start is all a show. I don’t think any state around us does it. Edited August 1, 2022 by Guntriple

I don’t think these kids are as accustomed as you think. I played 15 years ago and had a teammate go to the hospital thankfully survived and played that year, but in full gear that heat is no joke. All games start at 7:30 year-long.
Former Coach
Both the 7:30 kickoff change and the 105 heat index recommendation came from the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. All boils down to the L word (liability). The 105 heat index is just a recommendation, not a requirement, to move practice indoors or later in the evening. In Tennessee if the heat index hits 105 they are not allowed to practice. I have talked to coaches that this time of year only get a couple practices a week in, and that's waiting until 7:00 or after to begin. longhorn75
It's definitely a good move, pushing it back. Makes the game much more comfortable for not only players and coaches, and fans, but also your cheer, dance and band members. I thought the 7:30 kickoff rule was already on the books in the MHSAA, but either way. I guess the next step for player safety will be recording how much fluid intake and recording weight coming in and out of practice is next. So sad about the kid from BHS. s1nglewing
Recording weight before and after practice has been standard at many schools. Surprised it isn't already mandated by both associations.
