Postgame Handshake

After what happened with Hattiesburg-George Co last season and now with Laurel-Meridian and now Louisville-Starkville, should the postgame handshake just be between the head coaches after the game and let the assistants keep their eyes on their players to make sure nothing happens?

Maybe if it continues per individual school. Some of these players are family members and neighbors. Yea if it happens twice send the players to locker room. They smile and talk over the weekend and before they get themselves on probation.

Vott, the two games that you mentioned for this year are rivalry games.  It probably comes with the territory.  For the most part and for 98% of games the postgame handshake is a good thing.  Sportsmanship goes a long ways.  Once the game is over, it’s over.  It’s ok to be disappointed when you lose and it’s ok to be happy when you win, but when those emotions carry over into something that becomes volatile, then those emotions aren’t held in check and it becomes an issue at that point.  The big rivalry games where there’s no love lost between the two programs are probably the ones where the postgame handshake needs to be between the two head coaches.  The last thing you want is some type of brawl where it can be prevented in the first place.

Laurel-Meridian is one of the oldest rivalries in the State dating over 100 years ago. When I was growing up and in high school, it was very bitter and no love lost between the teams and fans. Having said that, kids do need to understand good sportsmanship is still king and should be shown especially when you lose. I would hope that handshake will continue after every game. Back to Meridian-Laurel game, the radio guys were talking about players talking trash during the fourth quarter. Again I understand emotions around a rivalry but the coaches should be able to handle that along with the officials. Obviously there is going to be some talk during a game but coaches need to instill into kids the way to do it without it getting carried overboard.

I film at WC I have for more years than I care to admit lol. I never stop my camera well actually it’s a tablet now but anyway I always get the handshake line

Then you are doing it properly in accordance with guidelines. Any handshakes are expected to be filmed for liability purposes

I kinda see where you are coming from, but Hattiesburg-Laurel have been playing for over 100yrs and I cant speak for what happened from 1922 until the mid 1970s, but the Little Brown Jug game has never come close to having a scuffle in the over 40 games that I have seen.
