CFB Week 5 Thread

Recommended Posts

I might be sick in the head to keep doing this after four weeks of watching this State team, but here we go anyway.

State at Texas -38.5 - shield your eyes, State fans. This is gonna be rough. Biggest point spread I can recall anytime recently for an SEC game…. And I don’t think Texas has much issue covering. Horns 56, Dogs 3

Kentucky at Ole Miss -17.5 - would be more interested in this game in Lexington. And I do like Kentucky’s defense. But I don’t think OM has to sweat this one too much. Ole Miss 38, Kentucky 17. Maybe close for a half but I think OM pulls away late.

Georgia -2 at Bama - ok now we are cooking. Huge huge game. Based on remaining schedules I think UGA needs the win here more than Bama does. I always felt like UGA had a little bit of Saban phobia, well he’s gone now, so is the dynamic now different with DeBoer? I don’t want to overreact to Georgia having a weirdly close game with Kentucky but…. I think I’m taking Bama at home. Tide win 24-20.

Arkansas vs Texas A&M -4 - A&M is a confusing team, Arkansas is a chaotic team. I could go either way but I trust Mike Elko more than Sam Pittman. A&M 29, Arkansas 24

Oklahoma -2.5 at Auburn - No idea why I’m doing this but I think I’m taking Auburn here. First ever SEC road game for OU, starting a new QB, and Jordan Hare is a tough place to play. Also surely Auburn can’t keep throwing all these interceptions, right? Learn to hand the dang ball off, Hugh. Auburn 20, Oklahoma 14

I’m not calling for the upset here…. But something about South Alabama at LSU intrigues me. Maybe it’s USA scoring a stupid amount of points the last two weeks. But I like the Jags to cover as a 22 point underdog.

First SEC game for Texas. They will run the score up, up, up. They will cover the 40-45 point spread which it is what it will probably be by the weekend.

Ole Miss wins but I think KY covers the spread. First team that Ole Miss has played with even a pulse while this is KY’s third tough game. It could be a much closer game than anyone anticipates.
KY will not be intimidated. I think it may take Ole Miss a while to adjust to playing a good team.
They will win but it will not be easy. And if they have that dreaded off game with some turnovers and poor play on defense, it is game they could lose. Kind of a scary game for Ole Miss even if they don’t want to admit it.

A&M wins over Arkansas and covers the spread.

Auburn over Oklahoma as I think the Sooners will let Tennessee beat them twice. And Auburn is due to play better.

USA could pull off the upset. Something about this LSU team  is suspect. At the very least they will cover the spread.

Georgia beats Bama and gets the hex off their backs. Bama has looked good so far but I think this will be the first chink in their armor.

Some other games of interest

Washington-Rutgers and Rutgers is favored but Rogers & Co. get the win.

Wazzou-Boise…Boise is tough at home but WSU pulls off the win.

SDF-ND.  Fooled yall with airport code. ND wins over Louieville.
Whisky-USC. Woody & Co. for the win.

So UNLV is 3-0 with two Power 5 wins and a realistic path to making the Playoff…. And their star QB just announced he’s sitting out the rest of the season over an NIL dispute. He’s claiming he wasn’t paid what he was owed, UNLV is claiming they honored all signed agreements/commitments but his family decided to ask for more money after these early season wins.

What a broken sport this is.

I mentioned this very thing back in the summer. Players just quitting in the middle of the season.
So I am not surprised at all.
JMO I think they should get nothing NIL wise until the season including the bowl game/playoffs are complete. Period.
That would end some of this nonsense.
Unless they are legitimately injured then they would play in every game unless the coaches deem otherwise.

it seems that unlv has been tardy in freeing up the cash promised. if so, i do not blame the player and family.

How do we know for sure though because the way it pans out is it’s a he said she said since it was a verbal contract and no written contract? I’m sure UNLV did skimp on some money, but for me it seems like the kids agent dropped the ball on this one. For all we know another school may have contacted him offering him more money next year if he set out the remaining part of the season.

Apparently an assistant coach promised something verbally that did not come to fruition.

I thought the NIL was completely separate from the athletic department.

Am I missing something here? (Please note my sarcasm)….

The whole system is rotten and pathetic. College football is basically doomed IMHO. The quality of the product is going down the proverbial toilet in the coming seasons.

USC DL Bear Alexander plans to redshirt the remainder of the season and enter The transfer portal.

College football is no longer the same. We just thought sitting out bowl games was bad. This is a new level to the madness that’s been created.

Getting the spread down some?

Lol gotta be. From what I’ve been hearing is this game will be the healthiest our OL has been all year so seeing the injury report it’s gotta be Kiffin being Kiffin. Having Ivey and Dottery back this week on defense is going to be a sigh of relief. Losing Moore and Hamilton in the secondary hurts but not like the secondary has been anything to write home about. Gives guys like Brandon Turnage and Key Lawrence a chance to step up.

State’s Creed Whittemore is now redshirting the 2024 season. No word yet if he’s entering the transfer portal.

Would be shocked if he doesn’t. He’s one of several from the final Leach signing class that I don’t expect to be at State much longer. Like Creed as a player, feel like he could’ve been featured more by State, even if he’s still a young player:

It has gone from players opting out of bowl games now to seasons. This and the UNLV debacle are going to be the new norm. The NCAA and all those calling for the players to be paid have created a monster.

It’s not the concept of paying players that’s the issue. It’s the total lack of structure for it. The NCAA just released this into the wild and had zero plan for how to regulate any of it.

There is no way for them to regulate it. When the gov't and the courts got involved the NCAA was done. No way to put the genie back in the bottle.

Hard to understand why Creedmore has not been on the field more.
This all makes the Wild Wild West look mild and tame. Next thing we will see is the NFL drafting High School players. Nothing to stop them except themselves.
Teams are going to be a mish mash of players from year to year or even mid year to mid year. The concept of TEAM will go the way of the eight track stereo.
I will still have some interest in CFB and will always watch State when I am able. But I no longer plan my weekends around football.

Bottom rail is now on top. Usually that leads to disaster in most endeavors. Proper leadership is mandatory for any organization to work properly.
