Gautier may still be your best chance, albeit not great. They lost a lot defensively. They do have probably the best running back in 5A south with Solomon Baggett. He is a special player. I got to see them in the spring game. Offense will be pretty good. Athletic quarterback who can extend plays. Not an elite thrower, but throws it well enough. #8 is a speedy wide receiver with great hands. They do not appear to have the overall depth of weapons at wide receiver that they have had in the past, but will still be good. Defensively they had some decent looking kids but nothing compared to what they have had the last few years. Overall, I do not have a ton of confidence in 4-5A to be any tougher than it was last year honestly. I obviously do not know much about Wayne County (although Slick is not very enthused on the upcoming season so that leads me to believe they will not be good). A Brookhaven or Florence may be the best chance. North Pike was pretty good a few years back but struggled last year. It is a crapshoot right now in all of 5A overall. You have West Point, a big, big drop, and then everyone else it appears.

I'm glad you mentioned the Pike County schools.  I didn't realize that North Pike was 5A and they've got some good football in Pike County that usually flies below the radar.  It's too bad that McComb is 4A because I think they would thrive in 5A.  If they could make the move to 5A, it would definitely give them some breathing room.

Do you think anybody else in 5A South has a chance to be better than Laurel?  I know you've got the smokescreen in Brookhaven, but is that going to be the only threat in 5A?  I think you just need to find someone that's halfway decent and if you do that, then you've got someone who can send Laurel back to the abyss.

Yes, and no.  Laurel just out athletes anyone currently in 5A south. Since they joined 5A in 2013 who regularly beat them?  The answer is West Jones, Picayune, Hattiesburg and Wayne County. 3 now in 6A and WC is fumbling about. Brookhaven has knocked them off a few times in the past but they havnt been the same since Tucker Peavy left them back after 2011.  They are due for one of their once every 10 year teams however.

I honestly think if they loose more than 4 and don’t win state or lord forbid do not make it there that they will implode from the inside. If earnest gets tired of the fans and such in his face and leaves I would about bet the next head coach will not be as good as him and you will see them go down the path Wayne county has the last 3 years.

Natchez may be the most athletic team in 5a south. They just cant seem to get it together when it comes to making plays on the field. They have had athletes for years.

@Archer got any insights in regards to Pascagoula?  Apparently y'all have surpassed Gulfport as our longest running rival.  Congrats on the accolade.

I'm unplugged and have lost my enjoyment of high school football for varying reasons (of course one being the state of Pascagoula football for the better part of a decade now).

Having a senior QB with experience is usually a plus but he's a turnover machine.  The only scuttle I've been told is the offensive line could be a weakness.  And they've been mostly horrendous on defense for many years so I don't presume that trend to reverse itself.

For being unplugged, you certainly seem to be way more knowledgeable about what's going on in Pascagoula than Sims himself.  Keep it up.

Well maybe you can plug back in next season because I was told from a source who is typically always in the know and correct on his information that this is Sims' last season.

dude, how can you lose the enjoyment of those Friday Night Lights?  Even if you are disappointed in your team, they are other games on the coast to attend if you dont wanna watch Goula.

If I got to the point where I didn't like high school football, somebody would have to tear me a new one.  I've been around it far too long for it to just be an afterthought.

No doubt. Since Hburg is not playing until that Saturday night Aug31st, I will be at the Laurel/West Jones game that Friday.

I have many interests and curiosities in life and repetitively sitting in a stadium at 25% capacity while watching bad, fundamental football unfolding is no longer at the top of my list.

If OS goes 9-1 with their tough non-region schedule that will be a great testament to Bramlett and his staff's ability to plug players into the right positions after losing 10 starters on defense. Gulfport may have something to say but I haven't heard from d'Iberville lately either. Warriors are due for a resurgence after a few down years. Football season is almost here! Looking forward to it!

George is expected to be solid offensively. Defense lost some players up front and in the secondary but do return enough to be solid. Offensive Line is still not very good from what I saw in the spring. Deuce Knight is the real deal and he has good receivers. They will be a big threat in my opinion.

What are the chances they go undefeated?

They’ll be 5-0 heading into week 6.  They’ll be playing y’all at D.I. Patrick on October 4th.  Then the last two weeks they travel to Picayune and host Pascagoula.  That’s their three toughest opponents on the regular season by far.

Didnt Biloxi smoke them last season? I hear they may challenge ocean springs for region 4 title

George was playing with their 3 string quarterback. Deuce Knight had not transferred back yet and Brenn Moody was hurt. If they were full strength that game would have probably been a blowout in George County’s favor. As far as this season, I only expect Hattiesburg, Picayune or Pascagoula to challenge/beat George County in the regular season. Biloxi lost a good bit on defense and didn’t bring back a ton offensively from what I am told. I know many will bring up the new coach, but I believe that will end up being a bust and he will be gone in 2-3 years top. He will not be able to recruit like he did at Prattville (this contributed to his lack of success at orange Beach). Biloxi will most likely be fighting for the 3-4 spot from what I hear.
