Ole Miss hosted their first 2024 season game today against Arkansas State... and lost 4-2.

And State just lost to Austin Peay AGAIN.

 

Blow it up and start over. These two programs are a shell of what they were just 2-3 years ago. No resemblance to those championship caliber programs whatsoever,

It's really amazing how badly both programs look now after YEARS of being constant NCAAT teams and finally breaking through to the NC.

Both programs have been historically bad since the NCs.

We are only five games in but the optics are cloudy and mud stained. 
 

USM is the best baseball program in the state right now. Heck Delta State and William Carey are better than State and Ole Miss. as I type this.

Well State farted around and won a baseball game and then Ole Miss lost to a college I’ve never heard of before called High Point.  Maybe they were riding a high that pointed them in the right direction to a victory.  Either way it’s pretty bad that the apathy has sat in so early with both of these ball clubs.  Definitely not a good place to be.

I've heard of High Point, but only because I've been there many times due to past work. I've never been to the University but have seen the signs traveling so I knew it existed, had no idea they had a baseball team. 

Those NC trips almost always included some days in Winston Salem, which is home to Wake Forest. If Ole Miss gets whipped by High Point, I sure hope Wake Forest isn't on the schedule this season. LOL

USM moves to 5 and 1, scoring the winning run bottom of the 8th in a really well played college baseball game.

it’s early but the eagles seem to have hit another coaching HR with coach Ostander. Hill Denson to Corky Palmer to Scott Berry, now Oz. There’s a lesson there somewhere, maybe not going completely outside of the program and maintaining a culture?

Yep, USM has done a great job of knowing exactly who they are and what they need in baseball. Has not really translated to other sports for whatever reason, but the baseball thing they have figured out.

 

Time will tell if this USM team is as good as the last couple of years, but they’re sure as heck in a better mood about baseball in Hattiesburg than they are in Oxford and Starkville.

USM splits the Saturday Sunday games with Missouri State to take the series.

Freshman Seth Smith comes thru again, driving in the winning run Sunday.

Considering that no one with 10 or more ABs is hitting .300, the 6-2 record is certainly acceptable.

If this team can start hitting at a reasonable level, they should be ok. Barring injuries the pitching

has been and should be good enough. Coach Oz knows how to build a staff, how to call pitches,

and how to get the most from every arm he has.

USM wins the series with Indiana State Saturday and goes for the sweep today. D1 Baseball featured this series going 

into the weekend, 2 super regional teams from last year. USM bats starting to wake up and finally hit for some power.

Still too many strikeouts, but if you can get those extra base hits and HRs, makes it a little more acceptable.

You could’ve given me 50 attempts and I never would’ve remembered that Indiana State went to a Super Regional last year.

Now USM should win but they seem to find a way to lose to State when they are much the better team.

You hit the nail on the head with this post.  USM shouldn't lose this one, but watch this game play out like the way you've described.

To echo that, I believe State beat USM last year even though USM ended up being a significantly better team that got within one win of Omaha, while State had one of the worst pitching staffs in SEC history.

@Bulldogs4your prediction was etched in concrete.  You couldn’t have nailed that any better.

Sometimes a four spot in the first inning can be the best thing to happen to a team or the worst.

USM had the great start but sometimes you lose your focus and your edge when that happens. The rain delay certainly worked in State’s favor as well. 
To throw 8 shutout innings after the first inning was a great job by the State pitching staff. 
And Southern has a really good team. Both teams played errorless baseball which is good to see. 

 

Still not sold on State but this was a good win and the team is playing better. Conference play starts March 15th. We will know soon enough if we are better or still just a fraud.
