State’s receivers had an awful day for sure. This was a really boring game for three quarters and then the fourth quarter was pretty exciting, 31 combined points in the 4th alone.

State’s only chance on Thursday is if Ole Miss comes out even flatter than they did today. Or if some major injuries happen in game.

State will need multiple turnovers and be able to run the ball, dominate TOP and score TDs not FGs.   And that’s to stay competitive.

Only thing that makes me wonder if we are in for a close one is Ole Miss’s weird ability to let teams hang around for longer than expected. I know most of the time it has course corrected by the end of the game but you do wonder if that makes them more prone to rivalry game weirdness than you’d normally see in a 9-2 vs 5-6 game.

He will either come back or transfer. He is not a NFL QB. I actually thought looked decent today. Certainty not a poor kid who is scared of his own shadow. He was a bit tentative early but settled in nicely as the game moved along. The fact that we have receivers with brick hands hurt him today. At least six or maybe more very catchable passes were dropped.

Mizzou walked off Florida. Tough break for Ole Miss, they likely need a Mizzou loss for NY6 consideration. Florida gave up a 4th and 17 conversion that set up the game winning kick.

9 SEC teams are already bowl eligible. 3 more (State, Florida, SC) will go into home rivalry games as underdogs looking for their 6th win(s). I don’t know which, but I think there’s a real chance at least one of those upsets happens.

Florida looks like a real possibility with FSU having to go to a backup QB.   SC is also on a 3 game win streak.

So here are my early rivalry week impressions (I expect some weirdness):

Egg Bowl: Ole Miss is a double digit favorite and they likely should be. They’ve been a team that’s taken care of business against inferior teams, albeit with some stops and starts in the process. State has not looked particularly good against an FBS opponent all year. Every logical impulse I have says Ole Miss should win this game something like 38-10….

AND YET…… For some reason I think it’s going to be closer than expected. I have no idea why, and if Ole Miss wins big it would be the biggest “well duh” thing possible. Maybe it’s just the fact that we’ve now been a few years without a truly memorable Egg Bowl, but maybe we’re due. It especially becomes interesting if between now and Thursday a “Kiffin is leaving” rumor emerges again. I do think State will get up for this one with bowl eligibility on the line and a coaching staff that has a bunch of Mullen era State guys on it. Look, Ole Miss is the better team and it would be a fairly big surprise if they don’t win this game. But there have been some issues on the road and I can see that giving us a competitive game. I’ll say Ole Miss wins 30-23.

Iron Bowl: similar to Egg Bowl, the favorite should absolutely win, but Jordan Hare Iron Bowls definitely tend to get weird. I have Bama winning close.

Ohio State-Michigan: I actually like Ohio State here. They’ve quietly been really impressive lately and are more battle tested this year than Michigan.

Florida-Florida State: I think the Gators get the upset here. FSU losing Travis is just a huge bummer for a championship caliber team.

South Carolina-Clemson: Gamecocks win it here to clinch bowl eligibility.

LSU-A&M: Tigers win, and I think Jayden Daniels is your Heisman winner. Or at least he should be.

I've seen MSU teams much better than Ole Miss lose the egg bowl and vice versa over the years... the best team doesn't always win this one by any means. Like you 83, I'm picking Ole Miss but closer than expected.

Iron Bowl, I would have picked this one a close one last week... not so much after the Auburn WTF game this past weekend. It's certainly possible Freeze didn't have his players focused this past weekend and everyone was looking ahead to Bama, we'll see what happens. I'm rooting for Auburn, picking Bama.

I've thought more of Ohio State over Michigan all year before the Michigan distractions. I really like Ohio State to pull off the win this weekend now.

I also like the Gator upset. It's quite possible FSU loses to Florida AND then to Louisville in the ACC championship game.

I like LSU over A&M and certainly agree Jayden Daniels is a Hypeman finalist and probably should be the winner. It's very rare that award goes to someone on a 3 loss team, even when it's deserved.

Just to pick something different than you 83 (it's boring otherwise- haha)... I'll pick Clemson over South Carolina. I really don't like this pick either way honestly.

It's bad when the Egg Bowl is not expected to be competitive enough to even garner any back and forth between the fanbases. Maybe the guys here have just outgrown the jawing.

I think on the State side everybody is more focused on the coaching search and have just been banking on this being a loss since early in the season. Ole Miss folks likely have a mixture of quiet confidence and also maybe some uneasiness about missing what appears to be a lay up.

This game should be a slam dunk for Ole Miss. But where rivalries are concerned it is generally not a slam dunk.

State, for whatever the reasons, has not played any game this year up to the perceived potential of the team.

Ole Miss OTOH, has really played well all season save two quarters against Bama and three quarters against UGA (and that says more about those teams than it does about Ole Miss).

How the State coaching situation plays in to this is hard to tell. It can easily cut two ways.

So I am going to go with conventional wisdom and say Ole Miss wins 38-17.

Bama beats Auburn 28-14.

Florida over Free Shoes 42-35

Clemson 30 SCAR 27

UGA 40 Tech 17

A&M upsets LSU 35-34

Arkansas shocks Missouri 35-27

Tenn 24 Vandy 7

Kentucky 28 Louieville 20

other rivalry games

Winners: Ohio State, Washington, AZ, Oregon, Virginia,

And I have no idea who is playing NMSU but I am  picking the other team to win.

State has looked so confused defensively this year, I see OM jumping out to a big lead and cruising.  OM 41 State 17

Bama in a non competitive Iron Bowl

LSU over A&M in probably the best game of the weekend.
Florida over FSU

Clemson over SC

Ohio State over Michigan (this one should be a physical, testy game)

Oregon over Oregon St

NC State over UNC

Washington barely over Washington St

My gosh what a gross first half. Ole Miss leads 3-0. State has more yards but kinda mismanaged their last drive and it ended with them missing a field goal.

State’s defense is playing really well but I am perplexed at OM’s offensive gameplan. Is Dart not healthy or something? I’m floored by the lack of pushing the ball down the field on a bad State secondary.

Unfortunately I’m not sure State’s defense can hold out much longer. Kinda feels like State missed their chance to go ahead and now Ole Miss has a chance to settle in.

Game was closer than I thought and unfortunately two missed FG’s kept it from being closer.

Great call by Ole Miss on their second TD.

Questionable Offensive PI called on State was biggest play of the 4th quarter. Instead of having a first down inside the 20 we were backed up with a third and 19.

But credit to Ole Miss for persevering in a tough win. Proud of the State guys for a great effort. Especially the defense. To hold that offense to 17 points was remarkable.

State’s defense played really well, and OM had a really weird game plan.  It was almost like they were protecting Dart from himself.

State’s offense was inconsistent as always.  It looked like Rogers didn’t have enough arm to throw a 5 yard out, then he starts chunking downfield.

The whole game was just weird.
