Teams that underperformed 2023

Was wondering what yall's thoughts were on if any team underperformed this year. From the Pine Belt I believe Petal would be a team after beating Hattiesburg in game one people thought would be in the mix. Not sure what all happened but I know Petal people felt they were ready to make the playoffs. North Forrest is team that started out hot but cooled off real quick. After they demolished Lumberton people were really talking them up. I do know they have gotten better but eventually they have to get over that threshold. Purvis started out fairly well, they beat Forrest County and played Lawrence County well but didn't even make the playoffs with good QB and a RB that rushed for over 1600 yards. Perry Central only won 3 games this year after having 16 starters returning from a 4-6 team. Perry County surely had expectations of a lot better season then what they had.

I’m not too familiar with 4A south teams but I expected more from Mendenhall.

Not sure if it’s really underperforming due to loss of a lot of players from last year and a new coach, but crazy how McEvans/Shaw went from playing in state championship last year to 1-8 this year only scoring 24 total points.

I’d prob go with IAHS as well but not sure how much they had returning from last years 12-1 team.

Clinton has way too much talent to be what they were this year.

I also expected Laurel to be much better. But hell they still could win 5a south.

We lost our starting qb who had transferred in from Texas third game of the year and didn't return til mid district play. We had a lot of key injuries with guys missing most of the season tbh. Not an excuse though it is what it is. Played a lot of sophomores and juniors that was starting coming along towards the end of the season I think we should be a a lot more competitive next year.

New Albany fits this bill since they lost to IAHS.  Didn't play well against the only good region opponent they had in senatobia.  they did bone up in the rivalry game and beat ripley though.  now they get the louisville wildcats.

No doubt Perry Central failed miserably with the talent they had. D'Iberville again lackluster performance and don't give me that "young" excuse again. Harrison Central started on fire then fizzled. I too thought Petal was going to make noise but didn't. Lastly  I guess maybe Wayne County also with their talent

Hard to say that Ocean Springs underperformed without giving credit to a Meridian team that upset them in the playoffs. Still, many of us hoped that the Hounds had enough talent to make things interesting against the better 7A teams. Maybe just being disappointed means that we can expect more from the program in the future.
