Bulldogs4
The game definitely hung in the balance when it was 21-17. Ocean Springs had a first and goal at the two yard line. The Wildcat defense held the Greyhound’s out of the end zone twice from inside the one yard line. Then as CC mentioned, Hill had that great run on 3rd down that we eventually turned into a 99 yard drive to go up 28-17. Just so proud of these kids who have improved immensely from the beginning of the season. That is a testament to not only Coach Boyles, his staff but also the buy-in from the kids on the team. Playing OG again in the playoffs is awesome!!! Finally like old times. Yes Daniel Hill is a great player but a bunch of other youngsters have grown up as it takes a team to win a playoff game. Easily the biggest win for Meridian in over ten years and possibly the biggest since the SP game 15 years ago. Especially given how far we had fallen over the last six years. Dubaction
I watched the entire game. OS lost the turnover battle that they usually win. As good as their defense is… their offense just didn’t have the capability to push the ball down field and put pressure on the bank end of Meridian’s defense. Meridian did a very good job keeping everything in front of them.
Dubaction
As far as next week goes… just like old times indeed. I’m curious to see how much Daniel Hill has left in the tank because he’s really dinged up from what I can tell. It’ll be up to your defense to get plenty of stops. OG seems to have put it all together down the stretch as we so often do. We’ll need to continue playing a complete game and not let Meridian stick around. Seen that movie way too many times. Eagleman1228
Is the coast really that bad year in and out? just seems like this is a common theme every year in 7a. Even with the states best player last year OS couldn’t get it done.
Bulldogs4
Ocean Springs was definitely a very good team. Just caught a tough draw in Meridian who was better than your usual 4 seed. We played both Biloxi and Harrison Central earlier in the year. Beat Biloxi handily and squeaked by HC. Those were both back in September when Meridian was very much a work in progress. They had some uncharacteristic turnovers last night that Meridian was able to take advantage of and our kids played with great effort. I don’t think the teams are necessarily bad, it is just that D3 teams are generally tough every year. Even though we beat Biloxi 42-14, I thought they had some talent on the team and would be a solid squad throughout the year. But it did not materialize for whatever reason. To many Bulldogs to keep up with in Meridian… Daniel Hill should have won Mr Football in 7A at least in my mind. Dubaction
I knew that Gulfport Pearl game would be close. Gulfport was just the higher seeded team and probably the better team in theory if you ask anyone on the coast. But if you actually watch both teams they were pretty even from a talent standpoint. I never thought OS had enough on offense to beat Brandon or OG down the stretch. Just my opinion. ogwarriorbandman
Other than losing the opening onside kick and the 2-3 big plays by Biloxi, that was one of the best half performances I have ever seen by OG.

If there’s a better 7A player than Daniel Hill on one leg, I’d like to see him. Broke tackles and even caught a long pass. I’m sure next week’s game will be harder for him, but he just might make a game of it if he recovers. While I hate to dog 17 year old kids, O.S. didn’t come to play, and your doubts about their offense were confirmed. Bad tackling to some extent also. Just being honest. Good luck going forward. We’re trying to get into a position to play head to head with the big boys, which obviously means Oak Grove and others. That journey might take some ups and downs, but I do believe that the program itself is moving forward. Good luck to y’all, and hoping to see you next season. Bulldogs4
Ocean Springs has already proven you can play with anyone. You have an excellent football program and have been consistently good for quite a number of years. Eventually you will win a State Championship. Winning or even getting to the final game is very difficult. It requires good talent, coaching, fan support, community resources and some fortune. OS has four of those in place and it will happen in due time. I remember back in 2006 or 07, Ocean Springs came to Ray Stadium undefeated in the first or second round of the playoffs and the game was something like 42-0 at the half. You guys are light years better than that today. And that is a credit to the school.

I don’t want to think about how bad things were back then, but I do think the program has the things needed to consistently win, especially in the Coast district. Upgrading the schedule started a while back and was in full effect this year in the early season. The new stadium with the almost ready field house and facilities is the next step. The all in athletic foundation and fan support gives us a chance to keep up the base. The best in the state band, dance team, and cheer are all a part in the overall game day experience. All that said, without the best players starting early and coming up with a plan for weight training and nutrition, we won’t be able to win playoff games on a regular basis. This goes for any school football program that wants to improve. We’re down a bit after being upset by a Meridian team that seems to have our number, but overall, I think the team is set up for continued success. Wait till next year! Archer
Gulfport and OS are going to continue to have a problem come playoff time if the other region 4 teams continue to be cream puffs and little more than scrimmage affairs. It’s proving difficult to encounter the physicality and athleticism of the region 3 teams (which are far more battle-hardened) after several weeks of skull-dragging the likes of St. Martin and D’Iberville. Don’t foresee this changing with the really-don’t-give-a-damn approach that most of the other coast schools exhibit. I said every week during district play that those games were not prepping the team for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Meridian runs a gauntlet where they manage to win just enough to get in. Then, they’re ready to face a team that thinks they are favored by fawty. O.S. improved its early schedule and used that to solidify its weaknesses, but couldn’t play its best game when it counted. Again, taking nothing away from the Wildcats, but O.S. didn’t seem to be ready, even with a senior laden roster. It’s high school football. Upsets are the norm. Chalk it up to first year head coach in his very first playoff game after playing a cupcake schedule for region play. I hate it because it wasted probably the best defense Ocean Springs has ever had (probably will ever have). Defensively they are going to be essentially restarting from scratch. Offense will have some weapons, but loses some good offensive line and Quarterback. I know they Whitehead kid is talented as a quarterback, but putting him at quarterback takes a weapon off the perimeter. Maybe they can find someone to step up and take the sport. As far as coast football goes, it is a shame. Very few schools/districts really take it serious and the ones who do, you can see the rewards they are reaping. Too many districts do not believe that Academics and Athletics can be super successful together and it kills athletic programs.

The only game that has some intrigue (IMO) is Meridian at Ocean Springs. Ocean Springs is the clear favorite but the game may not be a gimme. Usually the number 1 seed has a an easy first round game. This one will not be a cake walk for OS though they should win. This is an interesting dynamic in that historically Meridian would be the team to beat and OS would be the underdog. Completely opposite now. Lotta pressure on Ocean Springs whereas Meridian has nothing to lose. Think OS wins 42-35 but an upset is not out the question. Should be a fun game for the fans to watch. nice job on the o.s. game. i would have expected o.s. and these 3 to win.
