Bulldogs4
Brandon, Oak Grove and Pearl all win. The only game that has some intrigue (IMO) is Meridian at Ocean Springs. Ocean Springs is the clear favorite but the game may not be a gimme. Usually the number 1 seed has a an easy first round game. This one will not be a cake walk for OS though they should win. This is an interesting dynamic in that historically Meridian would be the team to beat and OS would be the underdog. Completely opposite now. Lotta pressure on Ocean Springs whereas Meridian has nothing to lose. Think OS wins 42-35 but an upset is not out the question. Should be a fun game for the fans to watch. David
Obviously, the northern teams are favored going in. I still think that Gulfport has the talent and potential to pull the “upset” over Pearl if their offensive game plan gets better. Ocean Springs will need their defense to continue to play well, creating short field opportunities for their offense to have any chance. Meridian has given most everybody trouble in that district. Brandon and O.G. won’t have a lot of problems. Probably the sweep that most people have talked about since the preseason up there.

Ummm Ocean Springs is certainly favored over Meridian and to add a qualifier for them to have any chance is a bit of gamesmanship. They have earned the position as being the favorite based on their play this year. Gulfport winning over Pearl would not be an upset. Brandon doesn’t play Biloxi but ok. I think all the teams on the left wins. That’s what I am hoping for. I want OG to play OS and Brandon pretty much as simple as that. If we don’t beat them both then it will be a disappointing year for me! Unless both teams don’t make it which is possible. But, I do respect Meridian and their coaching, with Hill giving them a good starting point for the “upset”. Also, I’ve lost a little respect for the Gulfport team that I had considered good enough to make some noise. I’d just like to see them play a complete game against a quality opponent. Seem to play well for three quarters, as they did against Ocean Springs, Picayune, and Madison Central.

David
Brandon is obviously the #1 seed going into the playoffs, as they have turned a tough start of losing to two good teams into another run to the playoffs. Maybe not as good a team as last year’s, but their experience in the postseason puts them in the favored role, especially with the south championship game in their stadium should they get to it. Oak Grove started the season with the talented lineup and most everybody picking them to play for a trophy in Oxford. Two overtime wins early on were either signs of some weaknesses or a sign that they could win the close ones. The only loss came to old rival Brandon, and highlighted their nemesis, turnovers. At this point, the Warriors have to be favored to play Brandon again in a few weeks, but hoping for a better outcome. Ocean Springs began the year with question marks, none bigger than replacing the dynamic two time Mr. Football at QB. Offense looked to be down in an opening loss, followed by a 17 point early deficit on the road two games later. If ever there was a season changing moment, it was then, taking the handcuffs off of their offense, leading to a comeback victory and a run of wins through the upgraded schedule. Included in that was an eye opening win in Picayune. While the offense has improved, it’s still the defense that has forced huge numbers of turnovers, giving O.S. a chance to do better than last year’s south state loss if they can stay on track. Whether one considers #4 seed Gulfport a favorite or not depends on viewpoint. They certainly have a talented roster, staying in every game, before several late collapses, losing to four quality playoff opponents. A new coach learning to mesh with his players might not be as easy as once thought. Still, the Admirals could be dangerous if playing up to potential, maybe giving one of the above teams trouble if they can advance at home against Pearl. This is the playoffs, guys, the moment we’ve been pointing to all season long. Support your kids, hit the road if necessary, and give them the backing to pull the upset. Or, fill the home side with noise, winning one more game than last year, and avenge that playoff loss to that other hated rival. High school football is heating up. Let’s get out and enjoy it. Matt
Brandon by as much as they want Ocean Springs vs. Meridian: This senior loaded OS defense has been shutting down one dimensional teams for 3 years. Hill is definitely a beast and will probably bust a long run or two, but with no threat to pass I don't see them scoring much. OS offense will be the key. If their big OLINE can push the Meridian DLINE around, this game may get out of hand early. All hands on deck for OS after having a few key big men out or sick against Gulfport, so OS should be able to get the W. However, I'm sure Meridian is about to pull out everything imaginable. A team with nothing to lose is always dangerous, especially with athletes all over the field. OS wins 28-7 Oak Grove by as much as they want Gulfport vs. Pearl should be a good game. Don't know much about Pearl but I think Gulfport has the team to win the first round matchup this year if there aren't turnovers in key moments. GPT wins 21-14. Dubaction
Pearl is about as bad of a draw as Gulfport could have gotten as a reward for being the 2 seed. They’re about what and what talent wise from what I saw. What could possibly make Meridian tough is the coach roaming the sidelines. He just finds a way to score points. You think it’s as simple as shutting down a one dimensional team until that team has the best player on the field. Which is why I want to know if Hill played against Pearl last week. But anyway… OS probably has the best linebacker group in the playoffs compared to Brandon and OG so.. that’ll make a difference
mout25
I’m just happy to see Meridian in the playoffs after 5 straight seasons missing them. From 1982 to 2017 we missed the playoffs 4 times. As for the game with OS,I’ll have to go watch some film on OS to see how they look.

But anyway… OS probably has the best linebacker group in the playoffs compared to Brandon and OG so.. that’ll make a difference Boyles has the playoff history to take advantage of the first year head coach in O. S. if given the chance, but Bramlette does have offensive play calling experience the past three years there. Meridian played over their talent level against Starkville, Brandon, and Oak Grove, though not so much last week versus Pearl. You’re also right about the experience heading up the Greyhound defense, including 9 returning starters and a great transfer from Gulfport. I’m seeing on video that Hill has the ability to create with his feet, and that makes it hard to press the line given that he can break tackles and go long. Surely he has some passing skills, but pass rushers must keep him contained in the pocket. I’ve rarely seen turnovers created at this rate than by this defense. That allows the O.S. offense to play controlled, limiting their own turnovers. Home field has become a pretty good advantage for them lately. Should be an interesting game. The only game really up for debate in my mind is the Pearl and Gulfport game. Pearls QB is pretty good for his age and is very quick on his feet. I was shocked they beat Meridian like that last week so credit to Pearl. I favor Gulfport but they seem to choke when it matters. Round 2 7A South will be much more interesting. mout25
Hey Dub,I got around to watch some OS film. They’re a very well coached and disciplined team on both sides of the ball (not a lot of penalties or turnovers on offense). Their offense gets good play calling, but they’re not explosive in the run or pass game. Their defense carries them, and they play good assignment defense(everyone is where they’re supposed to be consistently). They’re prone to give up a big run play for a TD early in a game.
