State wide NIL bill.

1 $10,000 to the student signed by student and parent on contract.

2 Anything over that amount will be put into a trust until student turns 18 or graduates.

3 Over $10,000 must be reported to MHSAA with no administrative duties by MHSAA

4 All school employees can not be involved with giving out money, contract negotiation,  etc, etc.

5 The money must come from a business person, car dealership, sewing factory, etc with consult of their lawyers(legal contract), etc.

MS is one of 6 states that doesn't have HS NIL. Two of those are currently reviewing changes to adopt (Colorado and Michigan). It past time to put something on the books when every state around you already has something setup (except Alabama).

Why do high school students need to be paid to play football or any other sport for that matter?  A public education is a free education.

Maybe the good part is the fact that these monies come from the private sector and not from the gubment? Now college boosters can steer athletes toward a certain school as the high school hype builds for a player.

That's the main issue with NIL that everyone misses... A band member can get NIL money. They aren't being paid to play, they are being paid because they play. Think about a great tuba player at any random school. An instrument company can come and say we want to use you in ads for our instrument and pay you X amount of dollars. Their education is still free they are now being compensated for their time and likeness outside of school.

If you want to get compensated outside of school, get a dang job.  That's what I did and probably what everyone else would do.  A little bit of work never hurt anyone.

I did too, but it's near impossible now. Specialized training several times a week, the amount of homework, on top of games and practice, doesn't leave much time for a job. And again they are being compensated outside of school. The school can't be involved.

Isn't a child, who is a minor, a parent's responsibility?  If a child is in school and participating in extra-curricular activities, shouldn't the parents be providing food, water, clothing & shelter for the child?  Why should a minor need thousands of dollars to begin with?

They are but what if they can't? It's a different world than when most of us grew up.

Then it becomes well if we do it for this kid, why not this one? It's the modern world of athletics and as a state we are way behind on the curve.

Bottom line is not every family can keep up with the Jones. So if your nephew, neice, or neighbor needs a little help then help. It doesn't have to be NIL. Just make sure some of their needs are met if you have extra. And if Piggly Wiggly in 1A/2A school towns, Walmart in larger towns won't to give to player as NIL then sign the documents and bring the kid in for image and likeness as it was intended as I heard on the radio that Daq would receive NIL funds but at the same time Daq will be down at the Ford dealership in Starkville advertising and making TV ads.

I tagged the author of this bill on social media. He hasn't replied to me yet. Im going to do it again today to see such. But my question to him is how do we police this bill? You can get 10K and it not be reported to anyone at all and nobody affiliated with the school will be in control. It also says that NIL can't be used to entice people to come to the school nor can it be used for stats or any of that. What does he think NIL will be for then? They gone give the kid thats not good 10K just because? lol people don't think past their eyes.

Also its not publicly known, but Mississippi already has NIL. Its hush hush but its here. It was a QB that left and came back. That was a major reason why 🙂

Once this passes you will have to transfer to a larger school to get that kind of money. Then you will have to file it on taxes as income or a write off to the business.

Unless its a lawyer involved in downtown Bay Springs or up in Newton for example. It will be big city business folks giving over 500 dollars. Anything else it might be 15 brothers throwing in 20 a peice for him to lead the team to a championship only to lose in round 2 or tear the team apart when the other 25 don't get a dime.

so who is smarter, the mhsaa or our congress people?

I realize this is probably a trick question, and if I had to answer it correctly I would have to say neither.  With that being said though, the MHSAA isn't the one pushing NIL so it puts them on the correct side of this issue by default.  Now if those two synergies end up combining on this issue, they can all go jump off a cliff.  Someone has to draw a line in the sand somewhere.

But what if the mhsaaa could profit from it?

If MHSAA adds or changes their by laws regarding NIL it will have to come from a proposal at district meetings across the state. And you can bet each player who gets it will have report it and dish some out to MHSAA or their school. MHSAA will then get a portion from the school.
