2026 Baseball Season

Recommended Posts

State’s 2027 pitching staff, if health permits and guys continue to develop, may be the best in the country and the best in school history.

Bauer has no business being in college baseball. He should be somewhere in pro ball right now. I don’t know how Oak and Parker swung that. What he did last night for three innings was unreal. If he’s maintaining command, with a 99-100 fastball and THAT slider, from the left side as well… good freaking luck. The pitch he threw to end the 8th made my jaw drop.

State sweeps LSU for the first time since 1985 when Palmeiro and Clark were still on campus and yours truly was eight years away from being born. lol.

Say what you want about this team, but they win the games they are supposed to win. Zero Q3 or Q4 losses this year and the only possibility remaining is the Nicholls midweek game in a couple of weeks. I feel like they took a huge step toward hosting the last two weeks and probably would host if the season ended today. And I think if they can just play .500 baseball against a tough remaining schedule, you’ll see postseason baseball return to Starkville.

OM drops the series Georgia. Not the end of the world, but it will require OM to finish relatively strong IMO. They too have a tough finish to the year at Arkansas, vs A&M, and at Bama.

Governor’s Cup on Tuesday, I guess I’d say it’s more important for OM’s hosting chances given that they are 0-3 vs State and both teams are fighting for a spot, but it’s a big opportunity game for both teams on a neutral field.

USM dropped the Sunday game but still took the series on the road and their RPI is back in the Top 10. Southern doesn’t play a team with an RPI inside the Top 100 for the rest of the regular season. Guys, just don’t lose several dumb games and you’re gonna host again. It’s that simple for USM, in my opinion.

I remember that sweep very well from 1985. We also won the SECT in BTR that year with three straight wins. In those days, we played home - home against OM, Bama, Auburn and LSU.

So you played 24 conference games and the two top teams from the East & West played for the Championship.
Over Spring Break that year we went to Hawaii and played for a week. Returned home late on a Thursday. Promptly went to Auburn and got Swept by Bo Jackson and Co.

And we lost two of three against LSU in BTR early in the season as well.

Later in the season we caught fire and that sweep propelled us from six games down in the standings to finishing one game behind LSU in the regular season.

All that to say that surprises me that it has been 41 years since we swept LSU in a baseball series. And we still lead the overall series by 25 games.

I think Brian Hadad said it well, this weekend did feel very much like a State vs LSU series, just with the roles reversed. I’m used to LSU staging the comebacks and breaking State’s heart multiple times in a weekend. The script definitely flipped this weekend.

This LSU team reminds me A LOT of 2022 State and 2023 Ole Miss i.e. teams that fell off a cliff the year after winning a national title. They’ve got some impressive young hitters but man their pitching staff and defense are train wrecks. I understand they’ve had some injuries, but dang. I’ve never seen an LSU team struggle like this one does.

Great week for MS. Man this team is feast or famine. In SEC, 4 series sweeps, 2 series got swept, and 1 series

went 1-2. They are never out of game though, down 4 runs in Game 1, 5 runs in Game 2, and won both.

USM pretty good week that could have been a great week, but lose the Sunday game 4-3.

3-11 ROB will do that and giving up the 1st and 2nd HRs for South Alabama of the weekend.

Wasted a very good start from Sundstrom, 7 innings and 1 ER.

USM and MS both moved up in the rankings, so they both are sitting pretty good to host.

Huge game tonight for State-Ole Miss. Both pitching staffs are beleaguered after an exhausting weekend. Will be interesting to see each coach manages his respective staff. Obviously it will be Johnny Staff unless a younger seldom used pitcher pitches really well for 3-4-5 innings.
It is always going to be a competitive game.
Let’s Go Diamond Dawgs!!!

Sweeny on the bump for BOC. Who pitching for Bianco

looks to be Owen Kelly for the Rebels. His stats look pretty good. 24K in 23 innings, only given up 2 extra-base hits

thus far.

Guys I’m not sure this game is getting played tonight. I live 5-10 minutes from Trustmark Park and it has looked like brutal weather is on the way all day. It’s gonna be very iffy looking at the radar.

Well shows what I know about the weather.

Good win for State. Pretty dominant performance other than one or two innings where the bullpen just started giving out a ton of free passes. I believe this put State back ahead of OM in the RPI for the time being. It’s all fluid, but not an insignificant result at all. Especially with both on the hosting bubble.

USM fell to Tulane in NOLA tonight. Not a back breaking loss on the road, but they need to bounce back this weekend.

State at Texas this weekend. OM at Arkansas. USM hosts ULM.

State and OM can probably live with only winning one game in their series, two wins would be huge. USM probably needs to sweep.

USM blows a 5-0 lead at Tulane. That one stings. Especially with them on the bubble to host.

Needed that win.
Southern definitely needs to sweep this weekend.

State & Ole Miss need win one at the minimum and two wins would obviously make for a tremendous weekend.

I believe if State can win at least 4 of their last 9 SEC games they will host. More than 4 and they're a lock. That gets them to 17 SEC wins and the NCAA is not going to turn down a regional in Starkville that will put 35,000-40,000 fans in the stands for a three day regional.

I think they’re a lock at 4 more SEC wins. Might still host if they only win 3 more but would probably need a decent showing in Hoover.

Important to remember that even though the Gov Cup doesn’t count in the SEC standings, the selection committee views it the same as any other SEC win. Same goes for wins in Hoover.

So technically, in the eyes of the committee, State has 14 SEC wins already.

USM had the best night of anybody tonight and they got rained out and didn’t play. lol.

Ole Miss got run ruled. State lost a close game technically but got totally dominated by Texas pitching. 19 strikeouts.

Texas’ pitching was outstanding. We had several opportunities but just didn’t get the clutch hit and on the other hand Texas did get a couple of clutch at bats and hits and that was the difference.
Their pitchers made zero mistakes. Even the ball Frei hit out was a quality pitch.
Definitely need to win at least one this weekend.
We will see how it goes tomorrow.

Man, Texas left the bases loaded four innings in a row. And only scored three runs out of all those opportunities.
Tremendous win for State. Stone and Bauer were excellent today.
Wyers with a huge three run homer with two outs to give us some cushion.
Maybe Texas’ Sunday starter will be more human and we can scratch some runs and win the series.
