Rebel Bert
Back on the table as Governor will be pushing consolidation in his final 2 years. Anyone heard what counties and schools?
Chunky6617
I would imagine it will be your schools in counties that are underperforming academically
Chunky6617
I have never understood why Forest and Scott Central don’t consolidate. There is no reason why Scott county should have two school districts. Mount Olive and Collins should have consolidated 3 years ago Edited August 27, 2025 by Chunky6617
Merlin
A lot of people don’t understand why mt Olive and Collins dg int consolidate. Jasper county doesn’t need multiple school districts. Clark county also only needs 1 high school.
Bulldogs4
Also surprised that Newton has not been absorbed by Newton County. And here in Meridian they need to consolidate the school districts into one for all of Lauderdale County. Way too much bloat in both central offices. There are still enough students to keep 5 high schools in the county but no need to have two district offices a few miles apart. All that wasted money could go into the classrooms to help the teachers instruct better. School consolidation is not an if but a when in the years ahead. Why? Lack of money to continue operating small schools. Plus with the ease of transportation in the current day, distance to a school is less of a factor than it used to be. Now their facilities are running down, and they haven’t had a junior high team in 2 out of the last 4 years. Collins isn’t the one struggling, Mount Olive is. And they were the ones who fought against it.

My guess is they nearly closed and Scott County took over. In recent years many handle moved north out of Forest.

Alabama has 65 counties and Mississippi 82. We could stand to consolidate down to 70 counties. Then Redraw school zones and 1 school superintendent office per county with the exception of Hinds, DeSoto, and the coast.

I had a relative that attended Scott Academy in the early 60s prior to graduating at Forest after the Forest City Schools established their boundaries on along 35 from Smith County line to just south of Scott Central east and west on 80 and 21 north a ways. I'm confused. Wasn't Scott Central's first season 1964, and Forest's in the 1920's? And Scott County Christian only fielded a few teams before the school was shuttered. Explain. They had a HarperCollins location but no official address as of yet found.

But about 3 years ago the school board was set to vote to consolidate MO and Collins but the parents from MO showed up and got it shut down. Now they are suffering even more

It’s one thing for a city of a certain population to have its own school district then the county the city is in to have its own. But something else for there to be 2, 3, 4 school districts in a county with smaller population and several 2a or smaller schools.

The board voted 3-2 against. Hopewell kids shouldn't have to go to Seminary when your less than 15 minutes from Taylorsville, Mt Olive, or Collins.
