I was really surprised State couldn’t stop the run.  I wasn’t sure how they’d look offensively after struggling on their last road game.

We never could really get going offensively, the penalties were just atrocious, and we couldn’t stop the run or the pass on defense.  They controlled t.o.p. for 2/3 of the game and everything seemed to work in their favor.  It’s tough to win a ballgame when you don’t show up ready to play and you fail to execute and that’s exactly what we did.

The run defense is the single most disappointing thing for me about this State team. I realize not having Crumedy yet this year has hurt but a group with this much experience shouldn’t get pushed around like this. Tonight was the third time in conference play that they’ve allowed over 200 yards rushing. And there are still some really good running teams left to play.

 

In terms of stopping the Air Raid, LSU and Kentucky have given everybody the blueprint now. Bring pressure and disguise coverages. I don’t know why everybody doesn’t do it, probably a personnel thing. But if you’ve got the guys, this is how you stop State.

 

This looks like a 7-5 team, right? I mean unless they pull off a miracle at home against Georgia or somehow figure out how to stop the run before the Egg Bowl, that’s pretty much what I’m banking on. I think they’ll beat ETSU and Auburn at home but that’s all I can realistically predict for now. Decent chance they are double digit underdogs against Bama/UGA/OM.

 

If it wasn’t clear before, it’s clear now… consistency is not something you can bank on with Leach teams. No matter how good they look at their best, they are more than capable of laying an egg any given week. This is who he’s been for over 20 years now. There’s a lot of good that comes with him being your coach, but the lows can be really frustrating.

This was one of those games where it felt like we were playing 11 on 14 all night long. Kentucky had a great scheme and executed it to perfection. Save the one TD drive in the third quarter, the offense did zero all night long.

Defensively, was terrible other than the pick 6, we did not stop them after the first three drives.

Penalties were atrocious. I don’t get all the pre snap motion penalties. No excuse for those. Several of those helped stop potentially good drives.

State forced one punt last night against a team that entered the game as the 13th ranked offense in the SEC. They did force two turnovers but one was on a play where they also gave up a 3rd and 17 conversion and the other was on a frankly stupid play call by UK to put it in the air after they had been running it down State’s throat.

 

Good offensive performances against A&M and Arkansas masked some of the defensive deficiencies, but this frankly has not been a good State defense in conference play. And with a ton of returning starters I’m not sure there’s a good reason for this to be the case.

I’ll go ahead and say it though, State will not score next week against Bama.  Unless they run a KO back for a TD.

The last TD State scored in Tuscaloosa was thrown by Dak Prescott if that tells you anything.

RE: Tennessee/Bama, man that was one of the better football games I’ve ever watched.

 

I was totally wrong on the Heupel hire for UT. I didn’t see him as anything different from recent hires they’ve made, but he has done an amazing job in a short time.

 

Tennessee at Georgia in thee weeks will be another massive game. The SEC playoff picture is going to be fascinating over the next month and a half.

Yep 83, the rest of the season should be a fun watch. 

I thought UT was pretty good, but I didn't think they'd beat Bama... kudos for the job done at UT. 

The UT/UGA game should be a great one. 

 

OM has a tough trip to LSU this weekend. IF OM wins, they stay atop the SECW. IF LSU wins, they'll be on top of the SECW with Bama IF Bama beats MSU next week. 

 

BAMA has MSU,  bye, @ LSU, and @ Ole Miss the next 4 weeks. Bama RARELY loses 2 regular season games since Saban got the machine oiled... them running the regular season table is probably a good bet.

I am not sure Bama runs the table this year. 
They have had some close calls already this year and could have easily lost three games. 
What they have done is incredible but like UCONN basketball a few years back eventually it ends. Bama wins comfortably over State but LSU and/or Ole Miss are both very capable of beating them.

Bama certainly looks more beatable this year vs previous years. 

I'll say the same of other recent "lock picks for a NC" this year. 

 

To me, Ohio State has looked the most consistent team this year so far. 

As much as I dislike Michigan, I'd put them at #2. 

Georgia is the current #1 but I'd put them #3. They've flirted with losses, I think they'll lose somewhere... maybe vs UT? 

Clemson keeps winning but certainly have looked beatable. 

 

I wouldn't put money on it, but it's not crazy (right now) to think an Ole Miss vs Tennessee matchup in Atlanta. How crazy would that be after last years game with golf balls and mustard bottles? 

 

IF I had to put money on it today, I'd stick with Bama vs UGA in Atlanta.

I agree on the Bama/UGA SECCG.   It would be 100% Bama to lose to UTenn then end up SEC champ. It looks like it will come down to the OM/Bama game in the West and UT/UGA game in the East.  
 

OM still has their work cut out for them with LSU, A&M and Arkansas on the road.  It seems crazy to say, but I believe, other than Bama, LSU will be OM’s toughest test.

My gut says Georgia beats Tennessee in Athens, Bama wins out, and we get the SECG everyone was expecting all along.

 

Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t feel like this Ole Miss team can beat Bama. I just think it’s not a great matchup for OM, especially with Dart still being a young, mistake prone QB.

 

If I had to call it today I have Ole Miss finishing 9-3. But 10-2 is certainly on the table. I don’t see 11-1 because it’s going to be really rough to go 3-0 on the road against LSU, A&M, and Arkansas. And if State figures some things out defensively the Egg Bowl could be interesting too, but I’m expecting that to be an OM win as of now.

I’d say 10-2 fro OM.  I don’t think they beat Bama, but I also don’t think they lose 2 or more of those three road games.  OM still hasn’t played a complete game yet.  They’re great in spurts and disappear at times.  If they get their best play for a whole game, they would be dangerous.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, I'd take Ole Miss at 8-4 or 9-3 every single season. Now when you sit at 7-0, 8-4 or 9-3 might be pretty tough to stomach, but I digress. It's certainly a possibility. We have not looked overpowering by any stretch of the imagination. We will need to do a few things better to avoid a bit of a tailspin here at the end. I've got everything crossed that counts.

I would rank OM’s road games by the following degree of difficulty:

 

1. LSU

2. Arkansas

3. Texas A&M

 

I think they take a loss in either Baton Rouge or Fayetteville, possibly both. But I like OM’s chances in College Station against a bad offense and a so-so defense.

 

I felt a lot more strongly about the Egg Bowl being a toss-up until I saw just how bad State’s run defense was in Lexington. I can’t confidently say that OM isn’t a clear favorite on Thanksgiving night knowing good and well that State could very feasibly allow 400 rushing yards in that game.
 

That said, stranger things have happened in Egg Bowls. But I think OM is at least a touchdown favorite if the line came out today, possibly a favorite of 10+ points.

Another disappointing thing to me is this is a veteran team that won on the road @ A&M and Auburn and Vandy last year but has not handled either SEC road environment well at all this year. 
Especially this past Saturday night. The number of pre-snap offensive penalties was inexcusable. 
If you play your best and get beat that is fine but neither LSU nor KY did we play our best football. 
Again credit to both them as well. Kentucky smacked us in the mouth and we just whimpered.

I don’t think it’s a home/road issue as much as it is a matchup issue. LSU and UK had really good defensive gameplan. A&M had a really bad one. Arkansas is so banged up on defense that it didn’t really matter. And like you said, State was generally a good road team in Leach’s first two years, and this is his most experienced team, so it doesn’t make sense that they’d suddenly start spazzing out on the road as juniors and seniors.

 

I’m sure it would’ve helped to play LSU and UK at home, but not convinced it changes the big picture entirely. I blame many of the pre snap penalties on Rogers taking too long to read the defense because he was confused by the looks they were showing. It threw everything off.
