CFB Week 4 Thread

Nothing too interesting in-state this week but definitely some other games worth discussing in the SEC.

 

State is a 30 point favorite over Bowling Green. I’m not totally sure they cover that but I’ll be surprised if they don’t win fairly comfortably. BG is kinda weird, they were somewhat competitive with UCLA and beat Marshall, but lost to an FCS team in between. I dunno. BG did give State a big scare in 2013, different caliber of BG team back then though. I think  Dave Clawson was their coach then, he’s moved on and is now having success at Wake Forest. The most interesting thing about this game may be State’s throwback uniforms, which look sharp in photos. I’ll say State wins something like 41-14. But it’s Mike Leach so I won’t be totally shocked if this is weirdly close.

 

In Oxford we have the Malik Heath Bowl as Tulsa comes to town. Ole Miss is a three touchdown favorite, I feel pretty strongly that they cover. Another tune up in preparation for the huge game against Kentucky next week.
 

Florida at Tennessee, this feels like the first time in forever that the Vols will enter as favorites, and double digit favorites at that. The Vols have been really impressive so far. I don’t know that they can win the East but I can absolutely see them finishing in that 9 to 10 win range. Don’t count Napier out here, he’s a good coach that will have a good plan, but I think Florida just isn’t quite there yet in Year 1. Give me UT by a touchdown.

 

Arkansas vs A&M is very interesting to me. Bad offense versus arguably a bad defense (at the very least a banged up defense), but A&M’s defense versus Arkansas’s offense is a good matchup. A&M is a very slight favorite, I’m inclined to take Arkansas just because I think they have a difference maker at QB and A&M does not.

 

Missouri at Auburn, both teams are bad, but it’s notable for me because I think a loss here could spell a quick end for Harsin. I have no idea who wins this one, in Auburn I’m inclined to take the home team but they did just get destroyed at home.

I like MSU to win and cover. 

OM SHOULD win and cover, but Tulsa does have the #1 passing offense. I lean Tulsa has padded stats from playing cupcakes (same with Ole Miss)... it COULD be a more interesting game than most think. 

UF/UT is the best SEC game this weekend on paper. I have 99 reasons to pick UT at home and 1 reason to pick Florida. For some reason, I'm picking Florida. 

Mizzou/Auburn- I may be WAY OFF, but I think Auburn covers 7 points with a win easily. Auburn has more talent and Harsin is coaching to keep his job right now. IF Auburn loses, Harsin I'd bet on Harsin being fired Sunday.. if not immediately after the game. 

A&M favored by 2 hosting Arkansas- I have no idea and wouldn't bet this game.

State will win easily, and try to get the WRs confidence back.  
 

OM will do the same and fine tune for the huge matchup against UK.  
 

Harsin probably has one foot out the door already, but Auburn wins at home. 
 

I think Arkansas wins a close game.  I think they have more offense than A&M.  
 

UT at home.  I’m still not sold on UF.

I think State will bounce back play well and get back on track. 

The biggest thing for Ole Miss to get out of this game healthy. Tulsa is an outlaw team similar to Memphis, Houston, Cincinnati, Louisville etc. (especially those latter teams some years back). But they are going to do their best create fights, unsportsmanlike penalties, personal fouls etc. It will be important for Ole Miss to keep their cool and not respond to that crap. I know it is easier said than done. But mostly win the game and pray for no injuries. 
 

Auburn and Missouri are both bad but Auburn is at home so they should win, shouldn’t they? or maybe Missouri should lose would be a better way to say it.

 

Arkansaw beats 8&4iet 

 

Tennessee finally beats Florida.  
 

USM @ Tulane a few years back was a great rivalry game. Sadly those days are over. I hope USM can cover the spread. 
 

TCU-SMU is another intriguing rivalry game that has gone through some changes. I like The Stangs over the Frogs in a close game. 
 

Changing the subject. Did any of you guys see the 2023 schedule release? Both State and Ole Miss play Bama in September. How weird is that? Not necessarily a bad thing but that has never happened in my lifetime. 
I don’t like playing USM five days before the Egg Bowl. I know there is a discrepancy in talent but I would much rather play Southern early in the season. That is an Ugggghhhh IMO. 
 

State starts with three straight home games. SE Louisiana, AZ and LSU before going on the road @ USCE and then Bama at home. 
 

Oh well. It is what it is. Plus we have a long way to go with this season first.

State having 8 home games in 2023 is what caught my attention. Has that ever happened before? Definitely not a bad thing. Neither is swapping Georgia for SC, albeit in Columbia.

 

Ole Miss gets the unenviable task of having to play in both Tuscaloosa and Athens next year. Ouch.

I don't think we've ever had 8 home games before.  That's what caught my attention as well.  Maybe the conference is trying to make up for the year that we had 6 home games a few years back.  Who knows?  All I know is that the 2023 schedule looks much better than this year's schedule even though we play Southern Miss and Ole Miss in back-to-back weeks.

Heck, I’m pretty sure in the days of 11 regular season games we had years with only 5 home games. And you’re only 30 years removed from playing half your home games in Jackson every year. So I feel pretty certain this will be the most home games State has ever had in a season, or at worst tied for the most.

Three straight home games, especially against inferior comp, always results in fan fatigue and fewer asses in the stands.

And yes that was the other thing that I noticed. 8 home games. When I was growing , we would have 3-4 games in Jackson and 2-3 in Starkville in any given year. Almost all of the big conference games were played in JAN. That started changing in the early-mid 1980’s when they moved LSU/Auburn and some other games to campus and then grew with the first expansion of Scott Field in 1986.
 

The last home conference game we played in Jackson was 1990 against LSU (a victory as well and I was there). The last game in JAN was the following week as the visitor against Ole Miss (a loss but I was there). Rockey Felker’s last game.

 

Coach Sherrill was adamant that all home games should be on campus and the sentiment for that was changing as well. 1991 going forward was all campus with exception of a home game with Florida that they sold to TPA in the early 1990’s. 

 

Of course the town has grown immeasurably over the last 30+ years and there have been two more renovations/expansions and now it is a first class stadium with nice amenities. 

 

So 8 home games is great but I do agree that there could and will be fan fatigue. Three home games in a row is tough on families economically and in endurance.

State actually has two different stretches of three straight home games on this year’s schedule. Four of those six are SEC games that should draw good crowds, but you best believe there will be plenty of empty seats Saturday against Bowling Green and for the last home game against ETSU.

Mine won't be empty LOL!  That Bowling Green game is the one that us working class folks can afford.  If somebody wants to give me tickets for a conference game, I'll gladly take them.

Hats off to you, my friend. I had to miss the Memphis game but will be there Saturday as well.

Shrader for the win. Cuse 22, Virginia 20. 
Cuse is 4-0. I don’t care who you are, you have to root for player like Shrader. He is not an overly talented QB but there is no doubt he is a gamer and plays every play with all his heart and might. 
Obviously, he did not and would not fit in Leach’s system but if Mullen had been smart he would have stayed at State. The 2018 season would have been much better and I think despite covid 2020 we would have been more successful. As it was it was a difficult season of transition. Shrader would have been a perfect fit for Mullen.

Of course, he is taking it easy these days with about 15 million + in the bank. So he has done well for himself. 
 

Oh well but I am Syracuse fan this year and hope they continue to play well. I don’t know if they are capable of winning the ACC, but it would be cool if they competed for it and won it.

Georgia won 39-22. I'm surprised Kent State scored 22. 

3 turnovers for Georgia, I figure that led to some of Kent State's scores.

Not much to say about State-Bowling Green, that went exactly like everyone thought it would. We will learn a lot about State the next few weeks, starting with A&M at home in a week.

 

Ole Miss-Tulsa also going largely as expected. A lot of offense from both teams but OM has gotten a couple of more stops.

 

Auburn and Missouri did their best to set SEC football back 15 years. Goodness gracious that was a hard watch.

OM survives winning 35-27. 

I'll gladly take a 4-0 start, but overall.. OM looked like dookie in this game. 

 

Judkins has looked very good all season for a true freshman.

 

Did OM just sleepwalk through this game and still deserving of a #16 ranking or was OM just exposed? We'll find out in the coming weeks. 

 

0 points scored in the second half for this OM offense. I suspect Lane will be all over this team's butts this week. Defense missed a lot of tackles in the backfield also.

HOPEFULLY this team read too much about themselves (RAT POISON!) and work much harder this week to be better prepared for next weekend.

There’s a lot of ball left, but Texas and A&M may be looking for head coaches.  I don’t want to hear they have too large of a buyout.  They’re both supposed to have more money than the newly crowned King Charles.
