If you weren’t sure what a major rebuild looks like… well here you go.

This is a really bad State roster. I think there’s a little bit to work with at QB and WR but this is not an SEC caliber team in the trenches or anywhere on defense. When you can’t run the ball or play defense even a little… you don’t have a prayer.

I’m not making this a referendum on Lebby yet because I think the personnel issues are so bad that it greatly outweighs any coaching concerns. It’s also super duper early in his career as a HC.

I think most thought going in that expectations should be tempered…. But now it’s time to really accept what this is. You are bad right now, your rival is very good. You got a lot of crap to get fixed and I don’t think most of it is doable until after this season.

At least y'all have a better QB than FSU

And one year makes a difference. This is Dillingham’s second year at ASU and the overall improvement is quite evident. Coaching experience makes a tremendous difference.

Coaching stability is a must for State and in turn the roster will improve. But as you alluded, it will take some time. That is why I am not too concerned about what Ole Miss is doing currently. They have got it going on right now but we just need to focus on ourselves.

I think there is enough of a pulse on offense for this team to be exciting and interesting at times. They don’t run the ball well but Shapen is solid and has some quality pass catchers, particularly Coleman. Defense is an abject disaster…. But I’m kinda not surprised by that.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, don’t even bother wondering if you can win an SEC road game this year. Ain’t gonna happen with that schedule.

I still think Florida-Arkansas-A&M-Mizzou is not a bad home schedule though. Especially those first three (A&M lost to a Notre Dame team who just lost to Northern Illinois). You’re gonna have to win 3 SEC home games to get to 6-6. I don’t know that it’s doable with this bad of a line of scrimmage unit. But do I think State can be competitive in many of those home games against very flawed teams? Yeah I do, if they don’t turn it over a bunch.

2024 is not the year that defines Lebby. This is a rebuild and you’re on the front end of it. Less about a record this year and more about are you seeing clear progress as the year goes on.

Now all that being said, Toledo comes to your house next weekend and Jason Candle is a dang good coach and a worse MAC team just beat Notre Dame today… you can’t be looking ahead to Florida yet, you better be ready for the next one first or Toledo will do to you what they did to a good Arkansas team in 2015.
