Bulldogs4
Surprised that LB is not in the top ten after this weekend. Of course, one weekend does not a season make. For LB they were playing with a lot of emotion and played very well on FRI/SAT. Can they sustain that against teams that theoretically below them? I would say yes but that remains to be seen. Ole Miss looks good and did what they were supposed to do, pummel an average opponent. Arkansas State has occasionally been a thorn in the side of OM and VCU was a regional team last year at State. So this week for OM may be a bit more challenging. Still they should win 3 of 4 or all 4 possibly. USM opened with a cupcake but coming up is Jacksonville State, State and ULL so that task gets a bit tougher for the Golden Eagles. As 83 mentioned, State has a weak schedule this week but then we play USM at Trustmark next week so that will be a good test for both teams. Dawg83
State has a 6 game stretch coming up that is super tough. USM in Pearl, three games at Tulane, and two games vs Texas Tech in Biloxi. Almost feels like a 4-0 week this week is pretty important because you’re likely drop a game or two at least in that stretch.

I actually really really like OM’s roster this year and with their schedule they might win the SEC. It’s just kinda the same old “wait and see what happens in June” mentality with this program. Very fair, and I agree. Bianco has had a TON of regular season success at Ole Miss. He's been one of the best regular season coaches in the country. Bianco's postseason record has been far from "bad", but it's far from "great" also. Bianco definitely understands that. I heard him on Cross's show Monday talking about the opening weekend. He basically said: "Yeah, everyone wants a sweep on opening weekend but let's be honest, nobody cares after the season about opening weekend... they care about how many games you won in June." rebmus
OM beat Arkansas State 15-5, game called after 5 innings. It was called due to rain I'm guessing?
Dawg83
State drops Game 1 to Northern Kentucky. Kind of an ugly loss to a team that’s historically pretty bad and who got swept by ETSU on opening weekend. Still don’t think it’s panic time yet but this team is clearly not playing at a high level to this point. Still time to figure it out, but you’re gonna have to figure it out against much better teams than the one you just lost to. rebmus
FAR from panic time 83, but yeah... MSU just isn't playing at a high level right now. Playing at a high level in June matters, right now... not so much. Ole Miss won 10-4 tonight and is now 5-0. You can't ask for a better start for OM and I'm happy with it. I'd rather finish strong that start strong though... it's a long season, we'll see how it plays out.

With State you don’t have to be playing great right now but you also can’t afford just a ton of nonconference losses or it will hurt you come Selection Monday in terms of seeding. This State team is giving me some major 2014 vibes in the early going. Deep Omaha run the year before, lost some key guys but also returned a good bit, then had a lousy nonconference record and ended up having to travel for a Regional in spite of an 18-12 SEC record. Ironically that was also the same year as Bianco’s lone Omaha appearance for OM. Both teams had to make a trip to Lafayette in the postseason, State lost and Ole Miss won. That said, if any program has a track record of turning teams that don’t look very good into teams that somehow make a deep postseason run, it’s State. Bulldogs4
Sometimes you give credit where credit is due. N. Kentucky just outplayed us yesterday. I listened on the radio and Jim/Coach gave them a ton of credit. They pitched it well and were opportunistic. We are used to getting everyone’s best shot and this year that is going to be enhanced. Some of our players are pressing and this what happens. They will settle down in time and get things going.
rebmus
MSU rebounded nicely with a 10-1 win today. OM/VCU got cancelled today.
Dawg83
Preston Johnson looked good in a starting role, State actually may have its rotation kinda figured out. Kohn, the freshman lefty, seems like he will be a key contributor out of the bullpen this year and good chance to be a weekend starter later in his career. Dawg83
I was hyping up Long Beach State after last weekend and then they went and got swept at home by Sacramento State. LOL.

LOL. Ouch, that will hurt MSU in the RPI... but how much does baseball use that anyway? Baseball has more weird weekends than any of the major sports, it's very unpredictable and the regular season means very little compared to how teams are playing in May/June. Bulldogs4
Not generally surprised by anything that happens early in baseball but Sacramento State? sweeping Long Beach is most definitely a surprise. I mean winning one , I could see but 3? Long Beach players must have partied all week after winning 2 at State. LOL
Dawg83
Funny enough Sacramento State is 7-0 and now ranked in D1’s Top 25. State dropped to 9, Ole Miss up to 2. State will really be tested in the next 9 or 10 days with USM/Tulane/Texas Tech all away from Dudy Noble. OM will have its first semi-test of the year this weekend with a road trip to UCF. WTH is up with the Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game polls? OM is 10 in one and 9 in the other. That’s crazy.

College Baseball polls always vary, a LOT... especially early in the season. OM is 6-0 and has run ruled half of those 6 wins, one can argue the #2 ranking. OM also has played a weak schedule so far, one can also argue the #10 ranking... or even lower. I've never been a fan of preseason or season polls until after the third weekend of conference play. I say that about EVERY sport, it's just guessing up until then. It's still some guessing at that point, but you have a real sample size for all teams to get some kind of idea how good teams are. Bulldogs4
Baseball is definitely different from football and even basketball to a certain extent. It is the only major sport that N. Kentucky can beat State or back in the old days, Delta State or a William Carey could beat State and it is not really considered an upset because in one game one team can beat another. So you are right in that it will be well into April before the rankings start being legitimate. For now, it is basically subjective. History will play a part, returning players, schedule will come into play, injuries, weather etc. really skew the early rankings and then the cream will rise as the season moves along. D1 used to just be a scores site and they hired away the best writers from all the other sites about 6-7 years ago and became what they are now. They simply have the most amount of guys who have been around the sport the longest. Edited March 2, 2022 by Dawg83
