Poplarville over picayune… sorry @maroontide06

Quitman over Meridian

Petal over Brandon

I wanted to say Quitman over Meridian as well since they pulled it off last year, but I think for that reason plus breaking out a new field surface gives Meridian the momentum to avoid the upset this year.

I did not know this… I used to love this ground and pound game

Poplarville runs that Notre Dame Box offense.  You never know who’s getting the ball or where it’s going to go.  It’s very fast and you’ve got to be locked in when you watch Poplarville play.

Jackson Prep will beat West Jones.

As a west jones fan this is actually the game that has me most concerned this year.

West will be pumped and focused going into the Laurel and Hattiesburg games.  More at stake. In county rivals, bragging rights, district title. But JP it like, just a team on the schedule. Easy to sort of lose some mojo going into it.

They're gonna be pretty stout, but in all honesty they were lucky to have made last season's game as close as it was.

If West Jones wants a real test, they might consider scheduling Brandon Academy/University Christian/Hartfield Academy.

I'm not a West Jones expert, but as I understand it, WJ lost virtually its entire defense to graduation. The defense was clearly its strength last year - and it was damn good.

On the other side of the ball, Prep lost very little offensively. It returns its QB (best in MAIS 6A), its top receiver (last season's All Purpose Player of the Year), and its entire O-line. Prep could very well end up with 22 seniors starting that game.

As far as last year's game goes, the game came down to two plays. Prep gave WJ its stiffest competition, as evidenced by the hangover WJ brought into the Terry game the following week.

You are correct, West lost all but 1 defensive starter to graduation.  But returns almost the entire offense.

You are also correct that last years game did come down to 2 plays.  West Jones dropping a punt that JP recovered that led to 3 points.  Official behind qb not throwing a flag on a jp o lineman who tackled a wj d lineman from behind as he was going to sack qb and then punching him in the ribs.  Qb throws 60+ yard pass to set up Jp’s second 3 points.  Video of this was sent in, along with several other bad no calls by this guy, and that official was suspended a couple weeks and longer allowed to officiate Wj games going forward.  There is a history with this official and Wj (he was barred from any Wj games a few years back for very obvious blatant missed or bad calls. And even bragged on social media about it. New coach gave him chance and his first Wj game this happens).  Anyway, those were only 2 times Jp crossed the 50.  That game not as close as score indicated.

hopefully wests new defense starting to come together by the time this one rolls around.

Two can play this game - Right before half, Prep's tight end clearly caught a touchdown pass in the endzone, but the referee ruled him out of bounds. Multiple television angles showed him in by a few feet. Prep should have been up at halftime.

In the second half, Prep's QB, Billy Puckett (#12), had slot receiver, Major Quin(#5), running wide open crossing the middle of the field (who, btw, was one of the three best players on the field, along with Lunch Meat and WJ's strongside inside backer; Quin played extremely well on both sides of the ball in this game). He underthrew the pass, causing Quin to have to stop and make a sliding catch. If he hits him in stride, WJ is down by 9 headed into the 4th Q.

The game was in question until the last couple of minutes when WJ broke a run on 4th and long.

All that said, I've said before on this board that I think West Jones was the best public school team in the state last year. Its defense was incredible. I believe West Jones would have beaten the 7A champ.

The best two overall teams in the state last year were West Jones and Hartfield. Between those two, having watched both teams in person and on film numerous times, I give the edge to Hartfield. But it would have been a fun game to watch.

West jones will still be solid next season. But I don’t think the beat Prep

I don't think schedules are out for next season due to reclassification that's got to occur.  Heck, they may not have Prep on their schedule after this year anyway.  If Prep wants to beat West Jones, they'll have to do it this year.  It should be a primetime matchup regardless of outcome.

That play happened right after west fumbled the punt.  Fumbled punts were an issue for west last year.  One led directly to Grenada’s only 3 points of champ game.  Another had terry in prime scoring position that would have won them the regular season match against west.
