From what I understand, Taylorsville isn't that great of a job anymore. I heard that coaches are stuck teaching state tested classes all day, Smith County doesn't pay much, and there is serious administration problems there. Considering everything, I would be willing to bet that it would be hard for a head coach to hire a good staff. Looks like the only good thing is the talent they are returning from last year

I remember back in 2019 when we went up to Hattiesburg for the state title game, y'all were playing the game before us and I got to talking with one of your fans and y'all were just some awesome fans to get to talk with. I just hope y'all can get someone who's done what y'all have done.
Rebel Bert
From what I here the principal is hiring her friends from Covington County. Smith County teachers are leaving. White kids are leaving. I was told it's now getting worse. It's what the Superintendent wants.

Bart you know anything bout that. Let me take you back to the 80s when JC Allen was superintendent. The county looked at purchasing land on the north side of Raleigh that was between 16 Section and hwy 35. It was a done deal except board president Eric Ates would not go for it. It would have been so much better for those kids from Polkville and Pineville being on the bus so long. The result is you have Raleigh high school built at the Vo Tech with intention of consolidation of all 3 high schools. Any superintendent would not approach political suicide at the time. Since then we gave had the worst superintendents In history of Mississippi. Now that they are appointed and not elected. Slick Nick who happens to love girls whom he has coached at every school is simply slick. He will eventually consolidate in some form . Right now he running white kids out of Taylorsville. The money men In Taylorsville are no longer in play. Part of the problem is the residents have to leave the county to find a good paying job. No jobs less money to fund schools. Now you have an ex superintendent whom I here and will never vote for is going to run for school board. His daughter is a teacher and is leaving the county to teach elsewhere. Obviously there is trouble between Taylorsville teachers and principal. I can't say who is at fault but it's playing right in to Hillman's plan to close Taylorsville. The problem then becomes Mize doesn't want the Taylorsville students in their A rated school with 86% White. In October Taylorsville was 55% black and 45% white. I am hearing now that Taylorsville is 40% Black, 30% Hispanic, and 10% White. If those percentage are correct it's pretty much 30 to 40 have indeed left and they may end up with Mt Olive numbers this fall in reclassification. 125 or so students. The blame is squarely on Hillman, Harris, principal, teachers, and board.
s1nglewing
According to NCES, Taylorsville is at 52% black and 43% white as of the 2022-23 school year. If kids have left since January 1 then numbers have changed. The bottom line is less students means less talent and less attractive jobs to better coaches. Chunky6617
Close to 50 kids have left Taylorsville or are leaving Taylorsville after this year alone. I was told by a former teacher who is no longer there that the superintendent is the biggest problem that they have because he will not allow them to discipline the students who are a problem. So that’s running off good students and good teachers. That’s just what I was told by a former teacher and they have been gone from the county for a few years now. I just don’t think the people of Taylorsville realize how much power they have in controlling the board. Currently, 3 board members support the superintendent, and 2 of those board members are from Taylorsville districts. If they want a new superintendent, they have to elect board members who will get them one. Raleigh has 3 board members, and only one of them supports the superintendent. So you can’t blame Raleigh and you can’t blame Mize. Taylorsville voters can only blame themselves. Chunky6617
What’s believed to be going on with the coaching hire is that the superintendent is purposely dragging out the process so he can tell them board he has looked at all the candidates and that Jimbo Nowell is the only one that’s good enough that has applied. He has already told Nowell that he is the guy he wants, he’s just trying do what he can to make sure he can get it done with the board. He does not like any of the current staff that’s already there, and he’s told people that as far as he is concerned he wished they would have left with Coach Seth. There is no love between Taylorsville and the superintendent at all. Edited March 30, 2024 by Chunky6617

Merlin
Have heard through grapevine that between west jones elementary and west jones high close to 20 kids from taylorsville had enrolled since Christmas break. And there are a few teachers with kids at taylorsville that have applied for teaching jobs in jones county school district.

So there may not be much of a drop in numbers.

Rebel Bert
Taylorsville percentages are based on PreK through 12th grade. So the percentages listed aren't correct to 7th through 12th grade. Grade. # 7th. 50 8th. 50 9th. 51 10th. 54 11th. 46 12th. 32 Pre K through 12th numbers White. 230 (37.7%) Black. 348 (57.08%) Mixed. 18 (2.95%) Others* 14 (2.27%) * Suppressed for reasons of protection Only things that really matters in my opinion is the 8th -10th grade numbers for this falls reclassification which puts Taylorsville at 155 and a 3 way tie with Smithville and Velma Jackson at #39 of 40 for 2A. If those 40 to 50 kids have left probably 1A. Now the problems need to be resolved or someone needs to go, resign or get fired.
