That’s not really surprising.  What was surprising was how Picayune was bigger than PRC last cycle.  The county is growing by leaps and bounds.  There’s not really any new residential construction in the city limits.

and Picayune hasn't expanded the city limits and the school district  area. Probably end up in court like Pearl and Rankin County. I believe the kids were given the option to attend Pearl or Brandon up until a certain date then the Pearl City Limits kicked in if you moved into the area. It also included subdivisions springing up which might not be happening outside Picayune.

Dang. Philadelphia and Heidelberg getting close to 1A numbers?

I don't remember what 2 years it was but Philadelphia was 1A at one time. They were also 3A. They are going by the way of JDC and Taylorsville slowly. I think its safe to say that many go off to college, get married and live in the suburbs of Rankin, Madison,  and other larger counties.

I don't have a clue as to how the regions in northeast will work out. We may have 5 or 6 school regions with 1 or 2 non football schools crossing region lines to play basketball  or baseball, etc. We may also see 6 team regions that split  current regions sending Delta schools east or Golden Triangle schools north. Maybe we see a return to 4 Region Football.

Have heard that Thrasher may be discontinuing football.

Maybe that's the trigger to go back to 4 regions for football. That leaves 30 for 8 regions. 24, 24, 24, in larger regions created this situation. That's 2 regions out of 8 with 3 football and at least 2 non football schools.

I would imagine it's going to take someone putting out a proposal at one of the district meetings for that to happen.

How can a school only have 69 students? That's ridiculous!

Remember that's only 3 grades. Covington County a few years ago had a hearing with intention to close Mt Olive. Everyone showed up at the hearing. The board voted 3-2 to keep the school open. One businessman in Magee fought it by telling everyone in his business to show up. His son then transferred to Simpson Academy. I agree that all schools at some point with a small number need to be consolidated.

A few years ago a proposal to count only the 9th thru 11th grades was passed. That's all they count now. I counted the 8th thru the 10th grades on the October 2025 numbers.

Yes and that is why I simply said this is only 3 grades.

A list of these 1A schools and their totals in 3 grades underscores the need for several on this list to consolidate in some shape or form.

Bigger isn't always better and from growing up in Northeast Mississippi, I am sensitive and also sympathetic to possible changes but it's not financially feasible to keep staffing schools that are in poor physical condition with shrinking numbers. At some point parents and grandparents have to accept their old school may not exist anymore.

It doesn't make since to pay more than 15 teachers to teach less than 50 students per grade. May lower that to 40. At some number the state legislature needs to set a number which automatically triggers the change or consolidation. Covington County needs to bite that bullet.
