Congrats to Pound. He will definitely energize the program. And that’s a good thing. That’s one positive.

but at the same time, he’s never been a head coach. And the coaching at Wayne county since Mangum left in 2017 has been subpar at best. Both Gandy’s had full teams, even Hankins first two years he had full teams(all I mean by that is 80 plus players which is normal at Wayne county) but the combined IQ on all of those staffs outside of 2 guys couldn’t power a potato clock. Excitement alone won’t be enough to get over the hump and back to state championships. He needs to be able to bring guys in that can help him.

Has he ever been a true coordinator?

Rooting for him — a former standout player returns to try and restore the program to glory.

However, there is risk in this hire and he better be able to assemble a high level staff around him.

Several big time head football coaches in the high school ranks at some point of their career had never been a head coach prior to their big break!

That’s very true.  Hopefully he has a vision and can bring that vision to fruition.  It’ll take all of Wayne County to get behind and support him.

I also think he isn’t stepping into the worst situation possible.  Is it going to take some work?  Yes, but he knows that and he’s probably eager to get to work.  If you’re not playing Wayne County, I tend to think you would want him to turn it around there.  I also feel like he can put some fresh air into the program that the community needs.

Ok Slick, in your opinion how much time does Pound get to bring Wayne County to the level it was at when he played there? I know WC people will not settle for 6-4 seasons and first round playoff exits in a not so strong South 5a.

I’m not slick but I believe he can if he puts the right staff together. He will get players out and he is where he wants to be. I think they will be a little more patient with him than usual. I’ve heard a couple of names that he’s thinking of bringing with him and they are WC guys to. Time will tell but this could be a homerun. Also think of the mentors of his that are only a phone call away for advice.

Interesting hire. He’ll be as successful as his staff as a few of you have already noted. Hope the best for WC program though. Gained a lot of respect for them over the years and they deserve to be right there in the mix with the other elite programs in the state.

Was he not a coordinator At Ocean Springs?

He was the OC but I’m pretty sure the HC was the play caller. He was the OC when the coach took the Gulfport job. Lampley had a lot of input and that came directly from him to me.

That level ? It took Mangum about three years to paint his so I would say at least that if he can even adapt to being a HC. Like some have said there are question marks with pound,   5A in the south is not a gauntlet so he has room to learn as he goes and still be competitive by the seasons end. Things aren't like they used to be where the pressure was on to get good by the fourth game of the season.

He's going to have to grind his way through it in the beginning . WC has some great looking football players that are getting ready to come to the varsity level

Winning culture- gone, nuked by Hathorne. Kids don't expect to win

He's taking over a team built by a glorified wrestling coach. The whole system will have to be taken apart down to the studs and started over

At least until May Hathorne will get in his way on every  aspect of improvement. So he really won't be able to do much until fall.

Hiring a competent set of assistants and not being saddled with any of the guys there now. I don't think people realize how much Bubba gutted the number and quality  of assistants. He cut at least one every season.

There are some in this administration and board that already resent him being here. By hook or crook they planned on putting Reynolds in even  if it took until summer.

He will have to keep his chin up and stay motivated until they can be rooted out. The backslapping and glad handing will wear off in about a month. He will be left looking up at this huge mountain he must climb , I wish I could be there and welcome him in the morning. Someone needs to.

The next question is what is Bubba's next move? Asst supt., Supt., retirement,  or decide to stay on so he can fire the coach in a few years.

He's through. He got a major beatdown behind the scenes at the end of last week. He threw a tantrum in the beginning but quickly changed attitude when he got told what was about to happen to him.  I think we have heard the last of him.

There are other fish to fry now

In title only.  And then, curiously, Bramlett elevated Brody King to OC after Green attempted to hire him at Pascagoula.

Good for Lampley. I hated how things went down for him here at Ocean Springs, but glad he has gotten an opportunity to grow. Like Slick mentioned, he will have some time to grow this program and 5A south is fairly weak so there could be some quick success. It will all come down to how good of a staff he can bring in.

Bubba if he still has the itch will apply for local principal  or superintendent openings until he reaches 70. If he gets it he will ruin it most likely.

Those have been my thoughts as well. Also as long as he’s principle he will have a big say in who assistant coaches will be in what is still his high school at this point

Pound is just going to have to weather the storm for the next 2 1/2 months.  After that he should be able to get his guys in.  Do you think he will do anything in regards to spring football?  I realize he probably wants to hit the ground running, but with the current situation he may not be able to.

Absolutely he plans to, he’s here today meeting with the players and the current staff to put his plan in motion. Also meeting with the administration to give them his thoughts. He’s already working on getting staff together but spring game is set for May 15th .

Has the current staff been helping with workouts for the returning players even though they probably felt like their job was in limbo for the past 2 months

I’m sure they have you have three Wayne County Natives on staff. I feel they have been helping I’m not sure how many of the other coaches will be staying. I was told four or five assistants would be hired. Now rather that is true I don’t know but Coach Hankins did bring in most of the staff besides the Wayne County coaches

  • slicklizard changed the title to Wayne County has hired Tracy Lampley - Hathorns cry for help was just a free snack

Congrats to Tracy! He was a great guy when we were in high school together and an amazing athlete. He will be a great Head Coach if given the time. I feel like it’s been so long since Wayne County has been competitive in football that he will be given time.  Which is really weird to say. This will be a fresh restart.

I guess I never really put a welcome out to Pound . I was too busy dancing over the carcass of Bubba Hathorne whic h I have to admit it's mighty good.

Nobody loves WC more than Tracey. There was most certainly those who had better resumes but as far as deserving the chance to be the next head coach it was Pound or Kat who has his eye set on bigger things than HC of football, proud for you Kat .

With that said there is a lot of doubt surrounding Lampley but that has always been lurking around him. People telling him couldn't do something fuels him like nothing else.  So don't be surprised when he knocks it out of the park. It's his show now and one could say what's going to be different than his last staff positions . Tracey has always been about leadership and being a team player, It will be interesting to see how he approaches being out front now.

The one thing I can say about him on that field is when called upon he was always right there and he never, ever missed the mark . He wanted the ball in his hands when it was all on the line. There's no need in going through the results most everyone knows them.

So here is where I stand on it. Tracy is my man at WC  now. I'm going to roll with him and let the chips fall where they may. The ball is in his hands again now just in a different way.

Welcome back  Pound. It's been way too long.

I absolutely concur he’s always been to small or something. But the first time he touched the ball in a varsity game guess what he did! He took a punt to the house it was the first of many Wow moments he gave us at WC. This is just the next

I hope they call Cooper and have him come get those skidder tires. Maybe bury them along with the skid T offense.

WC needs to be a running team again, As in you having to run us down and us running you down. For the whole game not just sitting on 7 points then waiting until for the hamburgers to get ready at the concessions.

Tracy is the first WC player to be the head coach. Shelton was a Panther and Kat was a temporary interm
