Yes big win for State. Road games have been a struggle under Jans in SEC play historically so this was a big one to kick off league play with.

Still a lot of work to do to get back into the bubble conversation, and they need to follow this up with a win against Oklahoma in The Hump on Wednesday. But the team has clearly started to play better in recent weeks.

The depth on this team is surprisingly good. We committed a lot of fouls today but the guys off the bench played very well. As physical as the SEC is, that depth paid dividends today and for us to be successful going forward, it’s going to be crucial.

I feel like the team got better when they told Shawn Jones to stop shooting so much. lol.

He is definitely the classic garbage player (and I mean that as a compliment) in that he is going to score about 4-6 points a game i. E. a rebound layup, a dunk on a broken play etc. but he plays excellent defense, rebounds and hustles 110%. A good complimentary player that every team needs.

That was a really impressive performance by State. Oklahoma is a Top 20 offensive team in the country per KenPom and State just smothered them. Tonight, in my opinion, was the kind of team Jans thought he had assembled in the portal last offseason. It took them a little while to gel and it may cost them a tourney bid at the end of the year,, but they are absolutely playing well at the moment.

You’re playing with a little bit of house money the next two games against Kentucky and Bama. Find a way to steal one and I think the bubble talk can start to get serious at least for a little while.

Don’t mistake it, I don’t think Texas and Oklahoma are world beaters. Texas is probably a bottom 5 team in the league and OU is probably a bubble team at best. But still, a huge improvement for State over what they were showing the first month of the season.

Long way to go and I would say we need to win 11-12 conference games plus one-two tournament games to garner a bid. The SEC is a grind but the conference is not nearly as elite this year as last year. It is cliche but we have to take one game at a time.
Feels good to be 2-0. It seems like that the last several years we have started out conference play poorly. And then had to scramble during the year to recover.

Kind of a weird game. State started off great and was up 12 early in the first half…. Only to lose by 24. Certainly feels like State is Kentucky’s annual get right game at this point. And now we get to play the other Jans kryptonite on Tuesday with Bama coming to The Hump.

Big home win for Ole Miss against Mizzou today.

Second game in a row where State opens the game playing excellent basketball, builds a double digit lead, and then falls apart to lose in a blowout.

This team still has a lot of problems.

Back in the day, if that was a Rick Stansbury team with a 14 point lead on Alabama, that lead would not be relinquished.  It's like everyone was done at that point.  And here's the other point:  Alabama only had 9 players available last night.  Everyone of those 9 players on Alabama's team had career days last night.  You really can't make this stuff up.

Um depends on which Stansbury teams you are referring to lol. His early 2000’s teams knew how to clamp down but by the end of his tenure he sho nuff learned how to blow big leads. Cost State a tourney bid at least twice.

With this State team, I think it’s a talent issue. They clearly know how to throw a pretty solid first punch. But the fact that they fall apart like they have tells me that they aren’t talented enough to pivot away from Plan A successfully once other teams start to make adjustment.

Jans will have to do a better job in the portal moving forward. This group is quite limited both offensively and defensively. I don’t know if this was just the best they could get or if he was just wrong on what he thought this group could be. But it’s been pretty clear to me since about Game 2 or 3 that this group is lacking in many more area than the last couple of State teams.

I also think State got way too 3 happy last night.  If they would have ran the offense and tried to get open mid-range and close 2 point shots, they could have kept it interesting.  A 3 pointer is good if you make it, but if they aren't falling just go for open shots inside the arc.  Empty offensive possessions will hurt worse than a turnover.

State could barely drive inside the three point line.  Bama was covering the guards up, and on the other end State couldn’t keep Bama’s guards from driving.   The stat lines were really odd.  It seemed like Bama was draining threes all night, but they only made 3 more than State.  Both teams had 19 fouls, yet Bama made two more free throws than State attempted.  They were 27-33 from the line.

Two great games tonight.  KY comes from 18 down and beats LSU on a last second shot.  OM gets a big road win over UGA on a third attempt with .2 seconds left.

Basketball version of the Egg, Part 1. Have no idea what will happen. Must win for State since it is at home. Both teams have been underwhelming for the most part of this year with a few sprinkles of good. Ole Miss is certainly riding some good momentum after a tremendous win at Georgia. State needs to figure how to sustain play for than 12 minutes.

Obviously emotion comes into play during this game and crowd will certainly be a factor.
With that Let’s Go Dawgs!!!

I lean State at home but it won’t be an upset at all if OM wins. I view OM as the slightly better team. I guess I’m kinda leaning into Jans’ track record against OM (5-1). I suspect the teams split the two games this year.

That kinda feels like season over for State. I don’t think this team is finishing above .500 overall. Just not a very good roster and super dependent on Hubbard and Epps… When teams can limit those guys like OM did tonight, it’s brutal watch. I am not trying to be overly dramatic here, but looking at the remaining schedule, I’m not overly confident State gets to 5 league wins.

I sensed this early in the season and the way it’s played out, I still feel the same… Jans just whiffed on this portal group. It’s as simple as that. Good coaches have bad years and Jans is a good coach and this is a bad year. He’s either got to do a much better job of evaluation with portal additions for next year, or they’ve really got to nail the development on some of these freshmen and incoming high school signees.

Very good week for OM with back to back road wins. They’ve still got work to do to make it back to the bubble but they’re moving in the right direction after a rough start to the season.
