Hopefully Friday alot of things get settled but from a talent stand point I think we're looking great. I feel like we got about 5 kids they will have breakout seasons with 1 kid specifically will turn heads. The biggest question mark is Lacey, nobody really knows what to expect from him. He might be the youngest HC in the whole state. I wanna see how he commands the sidelines along with his interactions with the players and coaches.

T'Darryl got a HC gig too.  He's very young as well.

I love it. Give these young guys a shot. I think Lacey is 33.

Last season was a 7-3 defensive battle. Will this one be a shootout with lots of scoring

Dub, from 1993-2011 Boyles was elite.  Those Taylorsville, Pearl & Wayne County years were his best.  That was an extremely high clip of winning that went on during that time span.  Now his span with Petal from 2012-2020 was very good as well.  Still a high clip of winning there, and his worst years really aren't that bad at all.  He's been able to win pretty much everywhere he's been.  Now here comes the unavoidable "but":  the last time he brought home a gold ball was 2006.  Like it or not that's now 20 football seasons ago.  If he's going to get another he needs to get it done rather quickly wouldn't you think?

If Marcus stays at WC he has several more gold balls. The talent that walks the halls at WC and doesn’t play is crazy. Marcus always had a way of getting those kids out to play. I understand why he left and have no hard feelings about it in my book he’s the best coach in the state

I would agree. At Petal he will have a high floor but a low ceiling. They will be good but I don’t think he will ever have the talent to win a State championship at Petal. No question it is a good job though.

i wished he would have stayed at Meridian. In one short year, he had really galvanized the community and put a competitive team on the field. Now granted he had a generational player in Daniel Hill but there was talent at the other positions as well. Yes there are some challenges here but I felt like he was capable of revitalizing the program and really bring the fans back to Ray Stadium. Now I know you WC guys were not high on Shelton Gandy but I have heard a lot good things about him from people close to the program. Now I don’t know if that will translate into more wins for Meridian or not. But so far he seems to be doing a solid job. We will see how it goes going forward.

Back to the original point. Boyles would have won multiple SC’s at WC had he stayed.

The game pretty much became a tradition being played on Saturday night. Literally everybody from surrounding areas came out to watch and enjoy... but i definitely understand usm vs msu will be played earlier that day but I'm also willing to think if you wanted to go to both you could for sure.

Nah. Nobody wants to watch high school football on Saturday night of Labor Day weekend

Bingo.  Oak Grove and Brandon are still monsters which creates some turbulence.  If he can navigate that and navigate the monsters out of the North, he’d be the best Mississippi has ever had and it wouldn’t even be disputable.

Biggest issue is that Petal is 1/2 the size of a Brandon or Oak Grove. Literally. PHS is 1/2 the enrollment of those 7A monsters.

If Petal were 6A, they’d eat it up, consistently make playoffs and be in the hunt annually. But unfortunately for them, as it currently stands, they’re one of the smaller 7As - which makes it difficult for them to compete. Especially in a region with Brandon and OG. They’d do better in the coast region with Gulfport and Ocean Springs.

But if anyone can help Petal become a ‘name’ again, it’s Broyles. He gets them to a higher level as a team. One of Hattiesburg’s biggest flaws will be what it has always been - too many showboats & hotdogs and not enough ‘team.’ Plus, their fans are fair weather. They were loving their team last year until at halftime of the championship game & then those same big talking fans were GONE. Pretty sad for those kids to look up and see that in their own hometown.

Petal was for sure hoping that when 7a was created they were going to be in 6a. A lot of their fans had them thinking they were going to be in the region with Hattiesburg West Jones Pearl River Central Forest Hill and Terry.

Depending on who would be playing, I would attend a high school game on a Saturday night over staying home and watching a college game. You can pretty much livestream any college game on your phone now.

I agree 💯. I used to hate making that trip to Wayne County on a cold November night in the playoffs when Marcus was there coaching. Those wayne county teams were like a fine tuned machine.

I remember back mid 2000’s when petal dropped from 5A to 4A a lot of people thought they were about to do something.  Then they got crushed by west jones and Wayne county.

Yes that was when Bubba Davis was over there. They had a very good receiver and Quarterback combo.

Mmm. I don’t remember every season but I do remember one season them beating West Jones when they had the Farris/Duncan combo (regular season anyway).

Petal schedule is absolutely stacked. There isnt an easy game on that schedule for them in non region games. And then back to back vs Oak Grove and Brandon to open region play and both on the road. Brutal!

That was 06 I believe, wests worst year of the 2000’s.  The year before that they had lost only to oak grove and was ranked then west and Wayne county both dropped 40 on them to end out the season.

Yeah the 2000s are getting foggy. I just remember that game because I went to watch a family member play at the time.

Dub that’s correct on the Quarterback and receiver. That was before Petal got the new stadium WC packed out the old one. I actually loved going to games there because you were on top of the action.

No they wouldn't . Beyond firing a low powder round at the end. Their problem, like  always,  is they don't have the players to be in top form at the end of the season. It's not a coincidence that they fell off the map after Poplarville put the MHSAA on them. Copy, cheat and win the press conference is their code. They are into whoever is coaching in Wayne County. I hope that trend continues.

Marcus is the best football mind I've ever been around in MS. He knew how to attack the next  opponent within minutes of looking at their film.

Spell his name right .

They will probably beat this new regime in Hattiesburg . Some local rag will rank them really high after it and that's really all they care about on that side of the river

I dont even know what type of QB he is. By that I mean will he tuck it and run on his own like Deuce Vance did at Hattiesburg or is he more of a drop back passer who will only run when he is chased out of the pocket. His stats at East Marion last yr were not great by  any means but that could also be because he may not have had much support

Simmer down bruh. Typos happen.

And come on now. Let’s not pretend that Petal would be worse off in 6A than in 7A. That’s just plain common sense.

Oak Grove and Petal were both 4A in the 90’s.

That was my thought as well, he may be the weak link early on but we'll see. Hopefully the game is streamed, I'm still in Texas.
