The stands on the home side are larger than everywhere in the state to my knowledge other than Meridian so it’s deceptive. If we have 7,000 at a game it looks like a ghost town in the stands. The visitors side is about average for 7A I’d say. With tailgaters, workers, teams, coaches, alumni, college coaches, and guests, there’s usually around 3,000 people standing around that field in addition to the stands. There’s a lot more people there than you’d think. Lots of parents stay in the endzone because they can keep an eye on their younger kids in the kids zone as well as enjoy their own food they can bring in. Some are sponsor tents, teacher tents, class reunion tents, administrator tents, etc. Many stay in there and feed the team and coaches after the game as well. There’s a large number of State and Ole Miss fans there who also tailgate on Saturdays as well and it’s just what they enjoy to do and what they’re used to. They almost all stand there and watch the game on the videoboard which I’ll admit I’m guilty of at State games. And if we didn’t have that tailgating, we might have 1,000 or so less fans per game. While I personally wish they were in the stands too, I’m glad they are supporting the team while enjoying themselves. It is what it is. Classy response. I didn’t want to come off as putting down the fan base because there was obviously plenty of support both in the student section and the end with the band. I realize that you wish there was more noise in some of the situations where it can help, especially on critical defensive stands. Otherwise, we had a great experience in the stadium, and I hope that this contract includes a home and home engagement. Good luck this week and the rest of the season. Picayune would never schedule a 2A opponent for that reason alone. It would not be fair to the smaller school and it certainly wouldn't be fair to Lamar even though they are MAIS. It would certainly be an unneeded massacre.
NoWammies
@maroontide06it took one of if not the best MAIS team ever in GCS to actually have a competitive game with a 6A school when they played Oak Grove couple years ago. That GCS team was stacked with some of the best Washington County and Leflore County public school kids at the time. That same team breezed through the MAIS schedule that consisted of some of the top 6A schools in MAIS. That right there should’ve indicated to him the difference in play.

Folks that haven't seen them both play in person and aren't around the actual teams can't understand the difference. You'll notice that really only 1 MAIS team has beaten a decent large MHSAA team and that was Greenville Christian which was made almost entirely of seniors who played on multiple MHSAA teams the previous years. Prep who was the Private School Almighty for decades split with Bassfield who was 2A. And their win was in OT after some ridiculous refereeing. The next year Bassfield beat them 41-14. Even MRA 20-21 who they see as the beacon of success would have gotten demolished by Oak Grove, Oxford, West Jones, West Point, and Picayune that year. If they think otherwise, they are delusional. I'd have Jeff Davis County over them that year as well. Edited August 29, 2023 by JagsFan77

However using a team that blew out the rest of their MAIS competition that year to compare MAIS/MHSAA is like a Vandy fan piggy backing on Georgia and Bama.

NoWammies
And what he fails to realize is when he looks at that MAIS/MHSAA records against each other most of the MAIS wins are going to be from large classification MAIS teams against lower classification MHSAA teams which makes sense since 5A-6A MAIS schools would be in 2A-3A MHSAA. Nowhere in there will be wins against 5A-7A MHSAA teams which this whole argument started from by saying Lamar could compete with Picayune. Not only will he get a better understanding when Oak Grove plays MRA soon but will also when MHSAA 1A #1 Taylorsville plays MAIS 4A #1 Tri-County in couple weeks.

A good 4A MAIS and good 1A MHSAA game should be good because they’re close in enrollment. Same as last years MRA/Raleigh game was because they’re close to same in enrollment. With the 5A is 5A comment I’ll use two delta schools who are in the same city as an example. Cleveland Central is MHSAA 5A and Bayou Academy is MAIS 5A. There’s a reason why Cleveland Central’s graduation is held at Walter Sillers Coliseum and Bayou’s either in their gym or football field. I remember the first time Prep played Pearl, everyone said Pearl would blow out Prep, Prep won handily and scored 42 in the first half. Prep, when 4A, also beat St. Stans the year St Stans won 4A. Great football in the MHSAA, but y'all have wrongly slighted the level of MAIS Prep and Lamar are on vastly different levels talent-wise. Lamar has never once beaten Prep and only one game in the eighteen played hasn't been a blowout.

Instead of telling us what Lamar has done since this started with his Lamar/Picayune comment. Fun fact, in the history of intrasquad games Lamar has only played one MHSAA school with a winning record and that was 6-5 Newton. Newton beat them that year and it was the same year Lamar won a state championship. Newton that year finished 4th in their region and lost in the first round. Lamar has never played a MHSAA team that finished better than 4th in their region and only 3 times have they played a team that made the playoffs. Those 3 teams all lost in the 1st round. But yea close game against Picayune smh.
