Are we also getting the WF pitching coach as well?

Apparently TBD depending on if Wake’s head coach get the Virginia job. If he does, Muscara would probably be the favorite for the Wake head coach job if it opens.

With Virginia having 20 players in the portal,  you'd think State would be in the mix for most of them because those players were there for O'Connor.  When you've got an established, highly successful coach who's been at one place for a long time they tend to develop an entire entourage (players and staff included).

Will be interesting to see what happens to Virginia after O’Connor. He built their program from nothing into a steady Omaha contender. We’ll see if they can find another good coach to keep it going relatively so or if they fall off the face of the earth like other formerly great programs of the past have. Rice is one that immediately comes to mind.

I think it’s fair to say the SEC underachieved pretty badly. When you have six Top 8 seeds and half of them don’t make it out of a Regional, that’s kinda rough.

College Baseball Regionals are the most unpredictable event in sports because in a short weekend anything can happen. Records mean absolutely squat as everyone is now 0-0. Then a  team gets the momentum going and it can be hard to stop.
There are times when being the home team can put extra pressure on a team. Visitors are playing loose and free because there is no pressure on them. A couple of things go wrong for the home team and all of the sudden everyone tightens up.

Plus you always throw your best pitcher first because in order to win game two you have to win game one. Obviously there can be exceptions but the idea of saving your ace for game two needs to go the way of the eight track stereo.

Give credit where credit is due. To the other teams that won games this weekend. No flukes, just teams earning their way to a SR or knocking out a supposedly better team during the weekend. When in fact the better team won the game.

How did Virginia do this season?

Actually not bad and surprising that they did not get a Regional Bid.

32-18 overall

16-11 in the ACC

And given how the ACC performed this past weekend, you can easily make a case for them being in over Kentucky, Florida or even State.
Not sure what their RPI was but overall while it was a down season for them it was not necessarily a disastrous season either. Especially compared to what kind of seasons State and Ole Miss had over the recent years.

Them missing the tourney is odd considering that they had a decent record and were Top 25 in hitting and Top 50 in pitching. Best I can tell, a bad nonconference schedule and a slow start in league play really tanked their RPI. They did a lot to dig out of the hole late in the year, but bid stealers bumped them out of the tourney.

Justin Parker staying at State as pitching coach. Personally have no issue with that at all.

Certainly that is great news!! He made as much lemonade as he could out of Lemonis (pun intended) the last couple of years.

With more talented arms on the mound, he should be fine going forward.

probably need an entire new convo just to discuss the portal in starkville

Yep. Three commits from UVA + an additional commitment from one of the UVA guys’ brother. Those two brothers may be the most significant haul so far. One is likely a weekend starter next year and the other was an all Big 10 bat at Illinois.

Don’t really consider Coastal beating Auburn an upset. Did not really think they were the fourth best team in the country. Coastal was severely under seeded. They were simply the better team.

Yeah I think this is a really good Coastal team. They are a legit contender, IMO.

SEC will have either one or two teams in Omaha. That’s it.

Most likely two. Don’t really see WV beating LSU two in a row in Baton Rouge.
Coastal could very well win it all. But at this point I am pulling for Arkansas. Van Horn is an excellent coach and it may be their year. At the very least, hopefully they send Tennessee back to Knoxville today or tomorrow.
And then you have the two sentimental favorites…Murray & UTSA though I don’t see either of them advancing to Omaha.

Who are we thinking are the favorites in Omaha?

LSU and Arkansas are the highest seeded teams, but they open against each other and are on the same side of the bracket. Would guess one of those two is the favorite to win it all. Don’t sleep on UCLA on that side of the bracket, they have a coach that’s been there and done that (unfortunately as State fans recall from 2013). Murray State is an incredible story and they’ll be the people’s team in Omaha. Just would be surprised to see them advance to the Finals.

I think the other side is pretty wide open too. Coastal and Oregon State are both very good, Arizona has good pitching depth. I’m less bullish on Louisville but obviously they’ve been in Omaha a bunch too and maybe are due a deep run.

Karma would have Arkansas beating Oregon State in the finals for redemption. Outside Arkansas & LSU, I don’t see any clear cut favorite. Louie-Ville & Murray are longshots IMO.

UCLA is sneaky good and AZ reminds of their 2016 team that beat State at the Dude and had a good run in Omaha falling to Coastal in the Championship series. No 2024 team returned this year. Coastal is a very opportunistic team that plays with confidence but not arrogance.

I think it will make for a fun week of baseball with hopefully some great games.
