Baseball Season 2025

Eager to hear what expectations are for everyone this year.

State got two run rule wins over a hapless Manhattan today. Ole Miss got a big win in Arlington over a ranked Arizona team.

I don’t think either fan base is thrilled with how the last few years have gone. State did take a step forward last year but there is still a lot of Lemonis skepticism. Kinda feels like Bianco is on the hot seat this year. Both programs have generally had an odd post-championship era for sure.

I’m generally optimistic about State but there are definitely a lot of unproven guys that will be counted on. OM was picked near the bottom of the league but it was nice to see Hunter Elliott back today and pitching well. He was a key piece of OM’s national title run and has barely pitched since.

USM fans are probably the most pleased with the state of their program of the three. They won on opening day as well.

The one thing I feel like State has is more consistent pop throughout the lineup. Last year it felt like a very top heavy batting order with little depth. I don’t know if they have a high end talent like Dakota on this year’s team but you’ve got 5 to 7 guys you feel pretty good about instead of 2 or 3.

Pitching, TBD. Hard to replace the two starters they lost from a year ago. But Parker has earned my trust after the big pitching turnaround last year. Pico had an outstanding start, Ligon pretty good as well. Curious to see what this team is like in the bullpen, as many remember that cost them a number of games last year.

Ole Miss took a left hook to the chin with Texas last night. But the good thing about baseball is there is another game today. Clemson is ranked high but it is a game that Ole Miss is capable of winning.

Manhattan obviously is not a strong opponent but thankfully State has handled business so far and we just need to do the same today. We lost several games like this last year and it cost us a chance to host. All these OOC games against lesser opponents are must wins if we want be in a position to host later.

Tonight's game starts a pretty formidable 9 game stretch for USM.

MState , La Tech at Hattiesburg for 3, Ole Miss next Tuesday,

TCU for 3 next weekend at Fort Worth, and finally Mstate @ Starkville the following Tuesday.

Win 5 and feel decent. Win 7 or 8 and have a parade on Hardy Street.

Certainly could bump strength of schedule and RPI, but need to win some of them too.

Pitching duel at USM which was not surprising given the weather and early in the season. State gives up one earned run and USM pitched it really well. State’s defense was awful with four errors.
Overall not a terrible loss for State but obviously a good win for USM.

How do you feel about our mid week pitching rotation?

Too early to tell but it was very good last night. Just played poor defensively and did not get any timely hits.

I do feel like mid week pitching has gotten better. Early season errors are pretty routine this time of year, but not making any excuses. If the bats can heat up, it will be a fun season. Reminds me of the 2017 team we had

That's got to be around the timeframe the last time State won an SEC Tournament game before this past season.

I know they walked too many yesterday but State only allowing 12 total runs through 6 games is pretty impressive. Not sure what to make of this team offensively yet. But pitching depth seems to be quality.

USM won 2 of 3 against LA Tech this weekend and OM only has one loss so far. We will see how Sunday games go but I think all 3 fan bases should be relatively pleased so far.
