Yep. I think State will be much better as a football team on the field in all aspects. The problem being the schedule is brutal. We could see a significantly improved team from a year ago that might go 4-8 or 3-9 or possibly 5-7.
6-6 would require winning all the OOC games along one minor upset and one major upset in conference play. Hard to see that happening but games are won and lost on the field. So we will see.
Ole Miss will be good but I do think they will take a step back this year…winning perhaps 7-8 games. 9 is remotely possible but again the conference is so tough and there will be several pickem type games that could go either way.
USM under Huff will struggle but I do see hope there as they will be improved over last year and will play with a lot of enthusiasm and energy. Not sure about their schedule but the SBC should be present a few winnable games.

Welp, State fans may have to brace for yet another AD change in the near future. Joe Castiglione at Oklahoma is retiring. Selmon will most definitely be a name in the mix for that job. Hopefully they aim a little bigger and State can hang onto Zac a little bit longer.

It's not going to be a clean break for Joe Castiglione.  He's going to hang on as AD Emeritus so he can train and hand pick his successor.  Why would he need to do that if Oklahoma hires someone with a lot of experience?  I would think they would give Selmon a call and I don't think he would be way down on the list either.

If there was a betting line on it, Selmon is easily one of the top favorites for that job.

And to be fair, I think everyone suspected this would be how it played out when Zac was hired in early 2023. He spreads his wings a little to get some AD experience, and he’s generally done a good job, but his family is royalty in Norman so if they offer him the job I can’t imagine he says no.

Very sad. Hard to understand why people want to settle their grievances with gunfire. What happened to a good ole fist fight? A bullet is most often final or at least life altering.

Prayers for the Adams family and for the Ole Miss football team. Losing a teammate is gut wrenching in any circumstance but particularly like this.

I’ve seen a lot of talk from State fans about that ASU game being must win…. ASU is ranked number 11 in the preseason AP poll. Third highest ranked team in State’s schedule behind only Texas and Georgia.

This reminds me of when State scheduled West Virginia and Georgia Tech in the 2000’s, and at the time of the games being scheduled

years in advance those teams weren’t particularly great, but by the time State actually played them, they were Top 10 teams.

Well if State doesn't beat Southern Miss week 1 it won't matter if the ASU game is a must win or not.  They've got to beat Southern Miss, Alcorn State, and Northern Illinois.  If they beat Arizona State that would be a huge boost, but unfortunately this is the real world.  If State can win those three and somehow manage to snag a couple of conference wins I think that would be a huge boost for Lebby.  Now if he manages to beat Arizona State while snagging a couple of conference games, you've got to tip your cap to his coaching staff.  I'd personally like to see him find 5 wins on the schedule.

To get to 6 wins though he would need to beat Arizona State and once you put all that into perspective, it becomes a very tall task.  I'm not saying Mississippi State can't beat Arizona State, but to expect it to happen almost seems unrealistic.  He needs a signature win and if he's going to get one, why not Arizona State?
