How so? Hancock would have been just as competitive as Vancleave was. I think Pascagoula would have finished 3rd at minimum in that region. George County being as bad as they were was a head scratcher for me though I will have to be honest. I expected a lot more from them. Laurel and Wayne county definitely up the credibility with their names, but that is it in my opinion. Swap out the rest and I do not believe it is anything world beating.

I honestly believe you guys are overselling what that region is going to be. East Central, Gautier, and Vancleave are replacing a quite a bit of players. Stone is losing some of its playmakers too. I know Laurel and Wayne county make the region “pop” but after them I believe the rest will not be that great.

He has been the HFC at Gautier for 4 years and has two playoff appearances in that time despite having a generational talent at QB. You take Kaden Irving off that team and what would their record be? High capitalized on a great situation with his QB and skill players. All of that is out the door now and I believe Gautier is going to step back to what they have been the past 15 years. Now, I will say this, if Gautier can become consistently competitive starting next year, I will give credit where it is due, but I just do not have faith in Marc High being a great ball coach. The Picayune game for South State proved to me he was in over his head. No adjustments offensively or defensively. It was like they expected Picayune to not adjust to anything from the first game and it got them beat. They were unprepared and it showed. Just based on track record, it was a lightening in a bottle type of season for Gautier that probably won’t happen for a while. If I am wrong, I like my crow medium rare lol.

Well if you guys want a good laugh, I was told this morning that Walters is going after Pennock from Ocean Springs. Was told Walters truly believes they can pull Pennock from his set up at Ocean Springs currently.

I would not be mad if Gulfport hired Tony Vance. He may be someone who ignite a fire in the program and get the community support going strong.
-
Bilderback will be a tough get with his wife vested as women’s basketball coach at Jones College. It works for them now living in Hattiesburg area and both commuting to Ellisville and Columbia respectively. He would be a great hire but I do not know if it would be doable.

As a Gulfport Alumni, I would like to see them go for an experienced coach that has had success at a previous program. My reservation with an out of state candidate would be how long will they be willing to stay? I do not want a coach that plans to be here for 5 or so years to get vested in Mississippi and then bolt out again. I would love to see Gulfport go after a guy like Tyrone Shorter. I doubt he would be interested in leaving the program he has built in Louisville, but I would make him tell me no. Great pay, great lifestyle and a nice area with solid schools. Gulfport is a good job that could be something special with the right guy in charge. The power-I and wing-T looks will not fly at Gulfport. The fans and community hate that style of play and you would hear nothing but complaints when Gulfport was running the pistol/flexbone a few years ago and reeled off 3 straight region titles.

I have always heard Jackson, Harrison, Hancock, Pearl River, Stone and George referred to as "The six coastal counties". I have always considered them coast teams. However, I could understand the argument for them to be more pine belt.

Fant has a record of 20-23 in 4 seasons in Vancleave. Two of those seasons include being in arguably the worst division in all of 4A. Outside of this year (which was padded with pre-region cupcakes), he has never had a winning record as a Head Coach. 1-3 in the playoffs. They had a nice season and a surprise playoff win this year, but I think we need to pump the brakes before anointing Fant as a success story just yet.

I imagine you will see some good names for this job from throughout Mississippi as well as surrounding states

Great pay, solid facilities and good athletes. Should command a ton of interest. Hopefully they make a quality hire.

John Archie has stepped down at Gulfport. -
East Central and Vancleave are both losing quite a bit of talent on their teams. Gautier as well. Region 4-5A will come down to Laurel/Wayne County in my opinion. I will be surprised to see Vancleave or East Central as a serious threat next season (although I think region 3-5A looks fairly weak, they could make some noise post-season due to that). Gautier returns a little bit on defense but replacing their entire offense outside of 3 receivers (one of whom is supposed to be the heir apparent to Kaden Irving) will be a very difficult task. Stone is a bit of a wild card as I am not sure what all they are bringing back, but I expect Laurel and Wayne County to be your top two seeds with the rest battling it out.

Coaching Carousel Thread
coastfootballfanman replied to Dawg83's topic in Mississippi College Sports
Jackson State is the real loser in this situation. They are fixing to be a dumpster fire. They hardly recruited any high school players the past two cycles. The ones they did sign, were 3 and 4 star players that would have never given them a second look if it was not for Deion Sanders. They have been portal heavy bringing in numerous players from the P5. I imagine the vast majority of those guys will be on their way soon enough and enter the portal for bigger/better situations which will leave Jackson State in a huge bind. -

Ocean Springs blew it last week. They matched up better for Starkville in my opinion. -

I understand that, but sometimes who you would be a fan of hiring would turn out to do a worse job than the one you were not a fan of hiring. Biggest thing for Meridian is stability and discipline. They need someone who can come in and establish that culture and rally the kids in the school and community to play football and build it. -

Tony Vance is a great coach and motivator. A community/school like Meridian in my opinion needs a strong African-American coach that has experience and success as a head coach and lead teams through adversity. Tony Vance fits that bill. You are correct, he has just one playoff win in the last four seasons. However, looking back over the last few seasons, his squads were decimated with injuries at key positions. Yet guided both teams to the playoffs the last two years and won a region crown this past year. Yes they got bounced in the 1st round this year so I understand your point and your thinking. I just believe big picture and rebuilding Meridian back to a consistent competitor, Tony Vance is a guy that could do that. He would bring consistency and discipline to the program and his offenses are always usually solid. -

If I was Meridian, I would call Tony Vance and ask what his price would be, and give it to him. I do not know if he would even be interested, but I would make him tell no thanks. -
Picayune vs. West Point 5A State Championship

Gautier @ Picayune 5A South State Championship
coastfootballfanman replied to maroontide06's topic in Football
In my opinion, it was more about how Gautier had circles coached around them. Picayune came out in a different look and it appeared Gautier had no answer/adjustment for it offensively. The offensive line looked awful. Big and slow. So Picayune was able to pressure with 3. When Gautier did try and run, they could not block and so there was no run game at all. Gautier did not look prepared at all to me. Defensively, they just got ground down and Picayune took them to the wood shed. Gautier probably will no be in this position for a while so I hate they could not get it done. Irving is a special player! -
Brandon kicks a last second field goal to upend Ocean Springs 34-31.

Marc High got circles coached around him tonight.
