CFB Week 2

First test of the season for State in Tempe. State is actually a 6.5 point underdog as we sit here today. Opened lower than that but I guess the public likes ASU at home. Personally, I think you’re getting a high scoring close game here. I like State’s offense but don’t trust the defense at this stage. Key to the game is whoever can force more turnovers, that team very likely wins. I’m going to go really close with my prediction, I have State winning 44-41 in overtime. Lebby and Dillingham are at similar stages of their careers and both interesting young coaches, I think this is a very interesting game. I just like State’s explosiveness on offense a little bit better here (wild to say that after last year, lol).

 

Ole Miss should have another snoozer against a Derek Mason led MTSU. Not much to say here. First OM game of any remote interest is at Wake next week.

 

Texas -7 at Michigan - I like the Horns to win on the road. Don’t trust a rebuilt Michigan offense yet. I do think UM covers.

 

Arkansas at Oklahoma State -7.5 - I’ll take the Pokes at home to win and cover 

 

Cal at Auburn -13 - this was very close in Berkeley last year. I think less close this year on the Plains. Auburn wins and covers

 

South Carolina at Kentucky -10 - Kentucky wins and covers

 

Tennessee -7.5 vs NC State - I am very high on UT this year, I think they roll here

I agree on each assessment and think ole miss rolls and I think AZ State will try to run it down the throat of the msu D and whomever wins that battle will ultimately win the game.

Offensively I want to see more from the running game this weekend. Kiffin said he intends to establish it more against MTSU. Got 243 yards on the ground against Furman but most of that was in the 2H during garbage time. Need so see UB IV have a better game. Rewatching the game now and he didn’t hit the holes hard and looked lackadaisical at times. Parrish looked the better of the two. Parrish did an outstanding job picking up blocks protecting Dart on pass attempts as well. I hope to see Matt Jones more with the first unit. He def earned the opportunity based off of last week. 
 

Defensively I want to see more from the secondary. Front seven looked like a championship caliber front seven but there were times the secondary gave up some plays that against a good FBS opponent it could result in a TD or continued drives on 3rd down. They gave up a couple long passes on 3rd and 15+. Trey Amos is the exception though. He played lock down corner while getting his 1st INT as a Rebel.

#19 Kansas @ Illinois(Bitter border war rivalry where anything can happen)

Boise St @ #7 Oregon(However I think Oregon bounces back big after a not so good showing last week)

#23 Georgia Tech @ Syracuse(GT riding high after the FSU win and new entry to the Top 25)

Iowa St @ #21 Iowa(Bet the under)

App St @ #25 Clemson(Very unlikely but App St has made their name from games like this)

I continue to be a bit surprised at the State line. I can rationalize ASU being a slight favorite, but a touchdown? Man that seems high. Been wrong lots of times before though.

I despise y’all with every fiber of my being and not the SEC SEC SEC type but I desperately need y’all to win this one to secure my $5K over 4.5 wins bet I got. I actually think y’all are a 7/8 win caliber team but this is the game that’ll tell a lot. My prediction is State 34-28.

I prefer this one which was my lucky shirt until this past year when I gained about 30 lbs. Wife made it a long time ago. It’s 12-1 and seen a Bama win. Dang Arkansas and their 4th and 2 miles.

4th & 25 for Ole Miss is the equivalent of the Immaculate Deflection in 1983. Artie Cosby’s FG kick was splitting the uprights (I was in the opposite end zone in the State student section) and we were cheering like crazy until the Ole Miss started going nuts on the E side of Memorial Stadium in Jackson. 
And then we were dumbfounded. Stunned. Devastated. Totally astounded. And I still to this day don’t believe what my eyes saw on that November day 41 years ago. 
And instead of a 26-24 State win, it remained a 24-23 Ole Miss win.

Got a game today that I’m surprised hasn’t been brought up that I just noticed too. Texas Tech @ Washington St. Coach Leach is getting inducted into the Washington St Hall of Fame today and other than State, this is the perfect game for it to happen at. Much deserved

Yep. It is cool to see Coach Leach being recognized at Washington State. 
What Texas Tech did to Leach rises to the level of what the NCAA did to State in the mid 1970’s. Both were severely egregious in every way.

And it is interesting that Texas Tech is now trying to honor Coach Leach. 
I don’t think Craig James or his son Adam Jones have ever apologized or even acknowledged the wrong they were a part of. 
 

But back to Coach Leach…what a Man and Coach. I thoroughly enjoyed his three seasons at State and it saddens me that his tenure was cut short by his untimely death. 
 

TT, Wazzou and State are very kindred spirits in many ways. Land grant universities that serve the more regular folks in their respective states and regions. Congrats Coach!!!

It’s crazy and unfortunate that the NCAA won’t induct him into the Hall of Fame because he’s .004% under the winning percentage criteria. The guy did a bunch for the game outside of win percentage while also improving teams he coached at.

Arkansas not looking too shabby early on. Up 7-0 and threatening again.

And just like that an INT return for a TD turns the momentum back to OK State. 14-7 Arky in the 2nd quarter. 
 

Regarding Leach and the CHOF, I think he should get credit for both TT & State’s bowl victories. Those were his teams. Then he would be over the threshold.

Arkansas-OK State was a big case of “nobody wants to win this”. Pokes finally did in double OT. But a bunch of facepalm moments in that one for both sides.

 

Cal leading at Auburn at half. SC leading at Kentucky. Northern Illinois leading at Notre Dame. This afternoon window has been weird.

 

Texas absolutely murdered Michigan in the Big House. Georgia comes to Austin on October 19th… go ahead and mark your calendars for that one.
