College Baseball Season

I still think it kinda depends on what happens in Coral Gables. Don’t think you can fire him if he wins a road regional against a national seed, but it could still happen if he goes 0-2.

The most likely outcome is probably they win a game or two and then are eliminated on Sunday or Monday. And if that’s how it plays out, I really have no clue what happens with Bianco.

It’s not a huge surprise they got in, but getting in over NC State, Rutgers, and Bama is a bit surprising to me.

RPI:

NC State 32

Ole Miss 39

Rutgers 42

Bama 51

Supposedly the selections rely heavily on RPI due to there are so many games and so many teams, they can't possibly follow all the teams. This would explain OM over Rutgers/Bama... I have no idea why OM got in over NC State.

IMO, NC State deserved a bid over OM... and probably Bama also considering the head to head sweep and records (with the SECT) were pretty equal.

I figure there are some hoping for OM and LSU to win regionals so LSU hosts OM and they can play up the storyline of Bianco being an LSU native/turned down by LSU for the opening last year and this is his revenge tour.

Lastly never forget $$$ comes in to the picture as well. If Ole Miss were to win the Regional then the SR would be a huge windfall for the NCAA regardless of where it might be played.

I know they claim money does not affect it but that is BS. The NCAA likes making more money not less. Ole Miss has a much bigger revenue potential than Rutgers, NC State or Alabama.

Interesting that two of the final four in Omaha last year completely failed to make the NCAAT this year.

Very true, teams like MSU and OM make money on baseball... not many do that. I have little doubt that plays into selections.

I also thought it was interesting that 2 of the final 4 (I'd wager final 2 had NC State been allowed to play game 3 vs Vandy) from last year didn't make the tourney at all this year.

Reading some expert opinions today, it’s pretty clear that nonconference strength of schedule was weighed heavily this year. The bubble teams that got in had decent to good metrics in that category, the teams that got left out did not.

Haven't really talked about Hattiesburg yet but that’s a very interesting matchup for sure. USM’s pitching versus LSU’s hitting could make for some really intense games. Kennesaw State is a sneaky 3 seed so don’t be shocked if they make some noise. Led by MSU transfer Josh Hatcher who is having an incredible year after struggling in his last year in Starkville.

USM better be ready for Army. They are a battle (no pun intended) tested team with experience. This is their Fourth straight regional appearance. So they will not be intimidated by playing in front of a big crowd. Every body is talking about LSU and USM but Army is no pushover.

And as 83 noted Kennesaw is solid, not a great team but decent. Actually I am not so sure that the gap between Army and Kennesaw is as big as the RPI shows (154-47).

As we all know, there are no gimmies in a Regional.

2004 Ole Miss as a Regional host.

A buddy of mine and I planned to head to Oxford Saturday to watch the games that day. We left around 10am and got to Oxford around noon. By the time we got there, Ole Miss had lost Friday night and again Saturday morning to be eliminated.

We ended up having a fun time since we didn't care who won from then out. We cut up a lot in left field with quite a few Tulane fans and a handful of Western Kentucky fans. There may have been a Washington fan or two, but I don't recall any... LONG trip for them.

Dang Reb. That is painful. We saw State lose in the Regional finale in 1989 and 1992. The ‘89 was probably the best team in State’s history. Finished 20-5 in the SEC as champions and 54-14 overall. Lost to NC in the regional final. It was gut wrenching. That team had everything needed to win the CWS. But in a short weekend regional anything can happen. Those were the days of the 6 team regionals.

OTOH, we were there in 1997 when we beat Washington twice to come out of the losers bracket to win the regional.

Thankfully we never got to State for a regional when we were already eliminated.

Over the years we have had some fun with some friends in LFL. One year, Tennessee Tech was at State and I think they beat Ohio State and the whole team was fed like kings the rest of the weekend out in the lounge. That was a lot of fun.

weather girl say tropical storm heading toward Miami.  Oh shoot

The Miami regional games have been moved to start tomorrow morning. I'm still not sold any games get played tomorrow, 1 MAYBE. We all knew this Tuesday, why not move the first two games to be played today?

There's a decent chance this regional won't finish until Tuesday, the Hattiesburg regional winner has to like that.

Since we are sharing Regional stories, I’ll give it a go. It’s 2003, State is hosting a Regional and North Carolina is the 2 seed. It’s Sunday, and State has to beat UNC twice after UNC won the Saturday game (this was the infamous Regional where Polk threw Paul Maholm against a 4 seed, but I digress).

My dad and I drive up on Sunday morning with no tickets and just hope we’ll be able to get a bleacher seat when we get to the ticket office. Somehow miraculously, there were two box seats right behind home plate available for the first game. We got them and had a great time at the game.

A quick reminder that State had to win twice that day. We only had tickets for the first game at that point and knew there would be a scramble afterward for game two tickets, so with State winning by 3-4 runs in the 7th or 8th inning, we left the first game early to get in line for game two tickets. With Jonathan Papelbon on the mound, State proceeded to blow the lead and lose game one in extras, all while we were outside the stadium waiting in line for tickets for a game that would never happen. It was a long drive back to the Pine Belt that Sunday evening.

USM edges Army 2-0. Heck of a good win. Of course at this point “just win baby” is the motto.

Campbell beats Georgia Tech 15-8. We know all too well that Campbell can rake. Also Georgia Tech usually loses in Regionals anyway so no surprise there.

Weather in MIA is similar to what it was in HBG back in 2017 when State beat USM twice to win the Regional after rain played havoc with it all weekend. Just hope they can actually play and get all the games in by Tuesday.
