Anyone who says they have a good indication of who is going to win it all is lying. This is as open of a field as I can remember.

Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Arkansas weren't even regional hosts, but they're playing as well as anyone else right now.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see those 4 the last 4 left with Oklahoma vs Arkansas in the final.

Typically teams with recent Omaha experience tend to do well on a return trip, I guess that would lead you to believe Texas and Stanford MIGHT be the favorites if they get there but they’ve gotta get there first.

I agree with you rebmus, there may be unseeded teams in the field but they’re all really talented and can make a run. Most of them were preseason Top 10 teams anyway.

That’s the thing about Omaha, everybody goes into it playing their best ball. It’s all about who can maintain it.

These are going to be some really intriguing first round matchups.

A&M/Oklahoma may fly under the radar a little but I don’t think either team has lost a series since early April.

Notre Dame/Texas is two big name schools plus it’s two really experienced teams.

Arkansas/Stanford might be the two favorites to win the thing and they go at it right away.

We’ll see who Ole Miss gets in game one but it’ll either be an Auburn team that has played great baseball against a really tough path or Oregon State who is very elite this year and always seems to go deep in this thing once they get to Omaha.

From a 1,000 foot view this is going to be a really tough draw for Ole Miss, but I also wouldn’t want to play OM right now if I was one of the other teams. That’s just how it is in Omaha.

This Auburn team reminds me a lot of the 2013 State team that Butch was obviously a big part of. Not great starting pitching but a really good bullpen. I presume they’ll start Gonzalez against OM (did not pitch in the series in March) and he is very much a Kendall Graveman type pitcher. One super star on offense with a solid supporting cast. I can be equally convinced that they go 0-2 or go on a deep run. I do think the world of Butch though and what he’s done at Auburn in just a few years is super impressive.

One thing that will be interesting this year is the more compressed schedule, especially with the losers bracket. I think it was necessary in terms of not dragging the tournament out too long for fans but it does test your pitching staff more. If you are on the OM side of the bracket and you lose your first game, you’d get a day off and then have to win 4 games in 4 days just to reach the finals. Suffices to say that first game is super important this year if you want to win the whole thing.

My picks are never right on these things but I’m sticking with my guns on the experience thing. Stanford over Texas in the final. Arkansas and Notre Dame make the Final 4. I’ve got Ole Miss going 1-2.

The CWS starts Friday instead of Saturday. It ends Thursday. So if you lose the first or second game, it is long row to hoe to win your bracket. Pitching depth is going to be way more important this year. The two winners do get off Friday and then the finals are Sat-Sun-Mon.

For OM winning the first two games is absolutely critical. I agree that Texas/Stanford/Arkansas are the favorites based on experience. ND will probably flame out. It will be difficult to match what they did in slaying the dragon this past weekend. A&M has confounded most people to this point but I just don’t see them winning here. Auburn has been solid but again I don’t see them advancing to the finals either. Oklahoma has quietly made their way in but again just don’t see them going to the finals.

But overall, there is not one clear favorite at all. It is as wide open as it as ever been.

I do feel like the teams that start on Friday have an advantage over teams that start Saturday. It’s another day to rest your pitching in between games and that seems like it may be more important than ever this year.

My guess is you’re going to see more guys throwing on short rest this year and potentially some higher scores. I just don’t know how you manage your pitching if you’re coming from the losers bracket with this schedule. Going to be interesting to see the different strategies. Rain delays and postponements may be teams’ best friend this year.

If you haven’t been before it’s a trip you’ve gotta make at least once in your lifetime. The trick is figuring out when to go. Most people can’t stay for the whole tournament so do you go at the beginning when you know you’ll get to see your team play or hedge your bets and wait to see if your team makes the finals and then go?

I have done it both ways. Went for State’s opening game in 2013 but wasn’t there for the title series. Last year we just went for the title series, but I took a gamble and bought the tickets and hotel after State won its first game (those in between games against Virginia and Texas were nerve wracking for me and my wallet. LOL)

I have lots of OM friends going, but I doubt I can take off to go right now. Work is just too crazy and also trying to finish a house build this month.

I'll be glad to be rooting from my chair, but I'd sure rather be there.

Great question Satch. I honestly haven't watched enough of the other teams to give an educated guess on that.

On Ole Miss... Delucia and Elliot have become a pretty dang good game 1/game 2 starter. Mallitz and Johnson have been much more stable stepping in from the bullpen lately.

Diamond is pretty good 1 time through the opposing lineup. You may get 3 innings but he gets knocked out in the 4th. Things get shaky in game 3s and even worse in game 4 (if needed) in the first round of the CWS.

IF OM can get to the finals, they have as good of a shot as anyone to win it all IMO.

Ole Miss's pitching isn't deep enough to make a run from the losers' bracket IMO.

BTW, your A&M vs Arkansas final is likely the smartest pick. Those 2 coaches have a lot of Omaha experience, and that certainly matters.

Who do y’all think has the best starting pitching and who has the best bull pen?  We know they all can score a ton.

It’s a weird Omaha year in terms of pitching. A year ago you had Bednar, Rocker, Leiter, Madden, and a couple of other high end arms. Not really a truly dominant ace like that that I’m seeing at this point.

I don’t think there’s a clear cut answer to your questions. You can make a solid case that OM’s overall pitching might be playing the best entering Omaha, but they’ll have to maneuver through some really stout or really hot offenses that I’m not sure they’ve had to deal with yet in the postseason. Texas probably has the most pitching talent on their team, if they can find consistency that’s probably the answer. Arkansas has pitched really well at times in the postseason. I really like Auburn’s bullpen with Burkhalter and Skipper.

83, of course on the big stage, a pitcher may emerge from the pack to lead their squad to a NC. But overall it feels like the offenses are at decided advantage this year. While there may be a few low scoring games, I think for the most part a team is going to have to score 5+ runs to win any given game.

Even though State is not there, I am looking forward to the CWS. It should be fun and entertaining. And as bad as State was this year we were 5-8 against the CWS teams this year. Not great but not terribly bad for the last place team in the league.

My gut feeling says Arkansas is going to break through. But if Ole Miss can win their first two games, then look out. You guys will have real legitimate shot to win it.
