David Posted October 21, 2023 Share Posted October 21, 2023 Finally, the game marked as most important on the schedules of both teams has arrived. The teams come in off of non competitive district winning streaks after starting the season with some tough games. Gulfport had a three game losing streak, during which they scored three TDs each game. Hard to point to a significant win on their schedule, but they score at will, and should be at their best coming in. Ocean Springs, after losing their opening game in a close match with a good Madison Central, have two good wins over NW Rankin and especially, Picayune. While relying on their defense, the offense has gelled, and I would expect this game to be high scoring. The winner heads to the playoffs with momentum and maybe an easier opening round opponent. Their coach should know OS like the back of his hand. He will definitely know the offensive scheme, though the new O.S. coach did most of the play calling for him the past few years. As for defense, the defensive coordinator followed him to their new team, and knows the personnel, but the defense has changed up somewhat. I’d like to think that inside information only goes so far, and that the players will be hyped and motivated to prove their abilities. Not sure how much the situation affects the players. David Posted October 22, 2023 Author Share Posted October 22, 2023 (edited) This should be a good, close, and high scoring game with some great story lines because of how close the characters are to each other. Winner gets the playoff advantage of home field should they play again, and bragging rights. I’m thinking, hoping, that the O.S. defense that causes turnovers in bunches will be the deciding factor, but the Admirals also have quality athletes all over the field. Home field rarely plays a part in this rivalry, but the game is at Milner Stadium in Gulfport. I have no clue how the emotions of the coaching staff moves will manifest on the teenagers that actually play the game, but the fans do seem to be a little more partisan. ( maybe that’s just me). I’ll be out of the country, sailing through the Caribbean and hoping for a streaming source, but I know that the Greyhound fans will show up on the road loud and obnoxious. Matt Posted October 23, 2023 Share Posted October 23, 2023 Gulfport has improved since their early losses and OS is rolling, with the defense being the strength for sure but the offense has been more explosive than expected. QB has been consistent in all aspects of the game and exceeded expectations in the passing game for sure. I'd pick OS based on how this defense has played in the bigger games this season but Gulfport QB has been playing great with weapons at all of the skill positions. This will be the most balanced team OS has faced since Madison Central in my opinion. Good test for both teams headed into the playoffs. O.S. defense has caused or benefited from maybe a couple of dozen of them, including two pick sixes in recent games. They have been pretty safe with their own possessions as well. I’m sure that Gulfport also does well in that department, though I don’t have any stats. Common opposition really doesn’t inform except for Picayune, which came from behind to beat Gport, but lost to O.S. Tide RB missed most of the Admiral game, I believe, and all of the Greyhound contest. More comparisons to come before I pick a winner. I’ve seen Gulfport in a Jamboree but those are pretty much worthless to judge. I watched OS play one time this year and they impressed. I looked at the records and nothing stands out to me. Based on OS experience the last few years in big games and Gulfport most of the time disappointing as the season gets towards the end I’d go with OS in this one. He play the first series and went out with the injury. However, like you say, they had that game in hand and let it slip away. Closest comparison between the two teams though in a head to head game. Maxpreps has both team's QB's basically having the same stats passing (1350 yds with only 1 INT) with GPT QB having about 160 yds more in rushing. OS QB has the higher completion percentage, almost 70%, and has definitely been a pleasant surprise for the Hounds. Defense probably favors towards the Hounds but Gulfport is no slouch for sure. You put the title of your thread and put your initial comments just like you would as starting a regular thread like this one, but then after that you have to select poll. Once you do that, you have to create a title for your poll and then you can make it multiple choice and then list the teams in the selection boxes. David Posted October 25, 2023 Author Share Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) All right, it’s time to make a pick in this rivalry game with big implications for 7A on the Coast. Not sure just how much having one team’s ex coach plotting against his protege on the opposite sideline matters. I would think that any insider information would be useful for each team as much as the other. Little known fact is that last year’s defensive coordinator for Gulfport is now coaching in O.S., so both assistants have tutored players he will be facing. My opinion of how badly things transpired are of no importance, but I have to imagine that teenagers competing against a past coach has some impact on their motivation. We’ll have to wait and see. My prediction is that the O.S. defense comes to play, creating at least three turnovers, and their offense uses that to pull away in the second half. Greyhounds 34-Admirals 21. Safe travels to those driving. Also, send up a prayer that I can get a streaming source on our sailboat in the British Virgin Islands. This should be interesting trying to watch the game I’ve been waiting for in the middle of the Caribbean. You got a point there Dub and it very well could be close. You never know what happens when those coast teams square off and you get a mixed bag most of the time. I think your right, this should be a really good game considering all the things that happened before the season started. I think if the Admiral QB has a good game it could be an awesome game. Division clinching win. It turned out like I hoped, with the defense really coming up big for O.S. after the first early TD. Greyhound offense seemed to play a little conservative or safe when they got the lead. This defense could give them a chance in the playoffs, and I would like to know who their likely opponents might be. Assuming that district 3 hasn’t completely shaken out yet?
