State obviously has one more game to win before we can really dive into a potential championship series.

But….

If you wanted to project this thing out for State, might not be the worst thing in the world for Vandy to win with Rocker on Friday. And then whatever happens on Saturday with Leiter vs. NC State’s ace just happens. Either way you would face a team without their total arsenal at full rest.

Granted, that advantage is somewhat negated if State has to play on Saturday too. No question that your absolute best chance to win the whole thing is to finish off Virginia/Texas on Friday and save Bednar for Game 1 of the finals.

Could be wrong but I am expecting a Texas win tomorrow night. Pete Hansen has been terrific for them and I expect him to be effective, and I feel like Virginia may have a hard time bouncing back from a brutal loss like they suffered against State. Certainly anything could happen in Omaha, though.

Just for discussion sake would you rather face a full strength NC State team that you are on paper better than or a short staffed Vandy that is just as good if not a tad better?

Honestly I think it’s about the same level of difficulty.  Going to be pretty much a toss up either way. And for me it will depend more on who State would have available pitching-wise.

If State wins on Friday I think they have at worst a 50-50 shot of winning it all. However, if they get to the championship but don’t have Bednar available for at least the first two games and perhaps not the entire series, I would put their chances at lower than 50%.

I do think they have what it takes to get one more win Friday or Saturday, I just don’t know which day I think it will be. And they could feasibly lose both. But I like the position they are in for now.

Well let’s just take care of tomorrow night first. Regardless of who we will play.
Maybe UT-UVA will play a 12-13 inning marathon tonight…..LOL.

I said coming into the CWS I did not think we were the best team in the field but the experience factor has been a big plus that has offset that. Offensively we have basically just taken advantage of our two opportunities in two innings. You have to feel like our bats will be better and we will put up some runs tomorrow night.

As Al Davis would say “Just win, Baby”

I don’t care how, just find a way. That seems to be this team’s best strength. Just finding a way because nothing is going to come easy.

One other thing I do not understand. This goes back decades and it is unique to baseball.

A coach generally uses his pitching staff in a certain manner through out the season and has success. Then in the postseason, he changes what created their success and more often than not it backfires and they fail.

Case in point , last night, Stanford brings in their ace starter as a relief pitcher. Why?
That is not his role. Why not trust your bullpen that has gotten you to this point?
Now on paper it looks like the right move and for 2.2 innings it appeared to be gold. But when he did that, I still had that feeling that something was going to awry before it was over.

Oh well, on one level I get it. But at the same time, I think it hurts the confidence of the team because basically you are saying to you other bullpen pitchers “you are not good enough for this moment.”

Trust what has gotten you to this point.

Stanford has no pitching depth so they didn’t have much choice. Had they beaten Vandy I think NC State would have smoked them on Friday.

You’re at the stage now where if you have a depleted bullpen it’s all hands on deck. Even starters. You’re more likely to see someone like MacLeod out of the pen in a do or die game for State rather than someone like KC Hunt.

I get that but what did they do during the regular season when they played a three game series F-S-S? In this case this is a third game in five days. Surely they had some additional arms to call on. Otherwise I don’t see how they made it all the way to the CWS.

and yes I do understand “all hands on deck.”

Obviously, that is where a coach makes decisions that can win/lose a game and they go with their best instincts.

OTOH, you occasionally see someone unexpectedly rise to the occasion in those situations even though they may have been sparingly used during the season.

At the end, credit to Vandy, they were beat for 26 and two-thirds outs but they took advantage of their opportunity when the door cracked open for them.

Can someone explain putting, I believe his name was Leggett in with the bases loaded and two outs against Virginia.  State could have used a few extra runs, but they brought in a guy that rarely has played.

He was already in the game as a pinch runner/defensive sub and his place in the order just so happened to circle back around. He actually scored what ended up being the winning run on the Dubrule single in the 8th.

Don’t think they will play Virginia/Texas tonight at least before 9P. So not sure what the plan might be if they get completely washed out.

One scenario says they will play at 9A in the morning. Another scenario says they will play tomorrow night and our game will get pushed back to Saturday.

I would doubt the latter scenario would be it. I think the first will be it. But what do I know?

Texas beat Virginia late last night. Close game for 8.5 innings and then UVA’s bullpen fell apart for the second game in a row.

So you have your final four. NC State/Vandy and MSU/Texas to determine who plays for a national title. More rain in the forecast today, I think there’s a chance they get the first game in but MSU/Texas may get bumped until tomorrow.

Would really appreciate the Dogs winning in one game, we have determined that we will be making the drive to Omaha if State is playing for a national title and I would like as much heads up as possible, LOL. I guess beggars can’t be choosers. Two chances to win one game against a team you are 2-0 against. It’s not a given but you feel like you have a good chance here.
