Brandon @ Oak Grove

Once again, this rivalry is the most impelling story in south Mississippi 7A. The winner assumes the favorite’s role in this district and probably the rest of the south and the state. Gotta like the O.G. offensive talent and speed, though their defense hasn’t been as good as advertised. Brandon started ice cold, but turned it around and come in on a pretty good run. Home field is the kicker, and I’m looking at the Warriors at this point. Better get to your seats early. Should be a packed house.

I may be wrong but after watching Meridian move the ball up and down the field on OG, I think Brandon may score every time they touch the ball. The inaccuracy of the OG passing game will keep OG from returning the favor. I see Brandon winning by a large margin!

If Brandon wins this is definitely not why 😂. That’s funny though.

Meridian put 35 points on the board vs Oak Grove. I suspect Brandon is a good bit better than Meridian.

It was a home game at The Ray and Coach Boyles is on that sideline up there.  The fact that Oak Grove was able to win that game by double digits is an accomplishment in my book.  I also realize that view is not the majority take, but Coach Boyles wasn't supposed to make it easy on Oak Grove.

OG couldn't stop a very one dimensional Meridian team for most of the game.  Brandon has a very similar back with a good passing game on top of that and they may run twice as many plays.  If they could both lose, I'd wish for that but instead I'll just give my opinion on it.

And who are you a fan of?

If Brandon wins it'll be because OG couldn't stop them defensively.  Would that be more of the correct take there?

It was the inaccuracy comment. Our offense is better than Brandon’s. I’m not sure if people actually watch the games or just watch the scoreboard with some of the stuff I read on here lol

I'm an OS fan that would love for both teams to lose as many games as possible but I'm sure that doesn't help your argument.   Meridian has a great RB and so does Brandon but OG is not going to be able to load the box  this week.  I just think Brandon is better than Meridian in both aspects of the offense and defensively as well. It's a big rivalry so I know both teams will be up for this game but I got Brandon big.

I've watched a few games online this year of both team but I also watched both teams in person in the playoffs last year. Your own guys have made reference to the inaccuracies at times but the good thing is one of us will be proven wrong Friday night. Gotta love High School football! Good luck!

Maddox literally just went 20/26 and 300 yards a few days ago.

I will say Brandon's defense is not that superior, so it could be Oak Grove big!!  No team has a better receiver room than Oak Grove !!! Meridian could not stop the run, so I understand why Causey fed Champagne and Tajii.  Brandon is no slouch, in which OG is well aware of!!  It'll be a good game , but I'll be down the road watching my Pirates play Petal and tuning in online !!

Yea… trying to compare the two teams in this scenario isn’t very smart. Meridian played OG close last year and OG still beat Brandon. We’re a lot like USC style wise. Score at will on offense and thankfully the defense has gotten just enough stops when it matters. It’ll probably have to continue to be that way.

Like you, my opinion of these two teams was influenced by what we saw in the playoffs last year. But, now I’m seeing one team much improved on offense, O.G., and one who started the season struggling. The opposite factor is that O.G. is struggling on defense, and Brandon picking up their offense lately. Maddox has almost eliminated the turnovers that killed their playoff hopes last year in O.S.  On the other hand, Brandon lost a lot of size and a lot of receivers since last year. One team is better than last season and at home. Still riding the O.G. bandwagon right now.

I think it could get to be a high scoring game, as both teams are abnormally giving up points---but that's the case when your team has a different identity each year!

It is possible but…

I read since 2018 the largest margin of victory has been 11 points and in the last 5 games, one score has been the difference.

Curious, is different identity the same thing as reload?

Friday morning pick in this rivalry game:

Brandon seems to have gotten past their poor start to the season, losing to a good Picayune and then to a mediocre Madison Central as they struggled to find their usual form, especially on defense. They then beat mediocre Gulfport and Warren Central teams leading into district play. Finally running the ball with their smash mouth RB and passing a little better, they come in on a bit of a roll.

Oak Grove has been as advertised on offense as their young skill players have shown up grown up. Less turnovers, more diverse play calling has led to wins over a good Hoover team in a historic first MS win. But, this defense has allowed quite a bit of scoring. MRA is perhaps understandable, but letting Meridian score big points is concerning opening division play.

Looks like the dynamics point to a high scoring game. Being in Oak Grove gives a bit of an advantage to the Warriors. Brandon’s recent playoff success is to their favor in a big game situation. Flip a coin here, and it comes up…..Oak Grove 38-35.
