West Jones @ Poplarville

Here's another interesting game this week on tap.  I kind of feel like we know where the scales will tip in this one, but Jay Beech is sure going to make it interesting for West Jones.  That offense is difficult to defend because you really don't know where the ball is going from a fan's perspective in the stands.  I feel like a game like this will come down to cleanliness and execution.  Poplarville may not be able to out athlete West Jones, but with the offense they run you don't necessarily need to.  If Poplarville plays a clean game on offense and gets a couple of stops on defense, look out.  West Jones could be in for a dandy.

I kind of got the vibe Poplarville might have been down some this year, but heck they will still have a winning season and they will still make the playoffs.  I’m sure there’s plenty of teams that would love to be in Poplarville’s shoes even when it’s a so called down year for them.  They consistently put out a good product up there. I just hope that whatever is happening at the junior college ain’t infecting the high school LOL.

If wj wins this week, they will be undefeated going into the final game vs Hattiesburg

Will be very difficult for Poplarville to score on this WJ defense

You’ve been around MST a long time and I know you don’t post much anymore, but do you think West Jones gets to the hot clock margin or can Poplarville put together a couple of scoring drives to keep it a full ballgame?

I don’t think so either.  Poplarville is playing at home and I know they’ll be fired up to play West Jones.  West Jones may win comfortably, but the Jay Beech I know is going to be a thorn in the flesh.  Poplarville is the Hornets and they are the Hornets for a reason.

WC has only played Poplarville twice in recent memory and both were jamborees. Even then you could tell they were very well coached. Didn’t their DC take the HC job at Stone County?

WJ is a different animal this season guys, they return all but two or three players from last season. They are bigger that they’ve been in years. Their offense is still a little behind the defense but that’s only because of the coaching change. They are almost up to par and a complete team. That defense wow I thought OG was the best I had seen this season but no. This is by far the most physical group we have played, they are big and fast. I saw WJ wins Poplarville may catch them off balance early but I believe they catch up

You’re right about West Jones. No one wants to see them down the stretch. That freshman QB is an athlete. Once he has a few more games under his belt, good luck doing much against WJ. If the team that shows up in Waynesboro shows up against Hattiesburg, I’ve got the Mustangs by 2-3 scores. Picayune vs WJ is gonna be a banger this year.

West Jones will not beat Hattiesburg by 2-3 scores.

Poplarville won’t score more than 14 against west starting defense.  Actually I don’t think anyone on the remaining regular season schedule will.  They only gave up 1 touchdown so far this season.  Laurel scored 1 against wests starters, a safety, then a td against backups.  Wayne got a td against backups late and that game wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

The offense is held back by inexperienced 9th grade qb and receivers that can’t seem to get much seperation.

The last 4-5 years west was turned the ball over no less than 3 times per game. Turnovers specifically lost them the games vs Hattiesburg the last 2 years and also playoffs against picayune as the 9th grade rb (10th grade rb out hurt) was dropping the ball in the first half so coaches abandoned run 2nd half.  If Wj ram the ball 3 times and punt in the 4th picayune wouldn’t have had time to complete that comeback.  This year they have 2 turnovers total through 4 games.

WJ 31

P’Ville 10

Regardless of the outcome, West Jones will benefit down the road for having to defend the Poplarville run-heavy offense.

I think the Hornets will need some big gash plays running the ball or short fields due to turnovers, special teams,..etc.

I just don't see them driving 75 yards and having to make 5 first downs against this defense. We have always had good

speed on defense, but this year, there is more size, which is what is needed against these running teams (wink, wink Picayune...)

I'm thinking something like WJ 31   Hornets 10.

Now, now...does Picayune need to go back up there to Calhoun and have another home game? LOL!

Thats correct. Region 3 winner has homefield all the way thru this season

But I bet you’d rather us make the trek to D.I. Patrick instead LOL!  First we gotta get there though.  I think if we make it that far those are two nearly for certain destination points.  It’s just going to be a battle for that 3-6A crown.  Heck we may be in a battle of our own.

I think if we meet as #1 seeds I think we'll have to go back up to Calhoun/Soso.  Y'all are actually closer to Calhoun anyway.

Hey be careful about making fun of Calhoun High my mom was a graduate of the class of 1959. My grandparents and many relatives are buried at Lebanon Baptist right across the highway from West Jones. Got many close relatives in the area to this day and they have kids going to school there. I do want beat them cause I am Maroon Tide all the way but do have much respect for the Mustangs. RTR
