2026 Baseball Season

I think they can absolutely get to Omaha. I don’t know if they are quite talented enough to win the whole thing, particularly on offense. The pitching depth is excellent, though.

I will be curious to see the rematch in Starkville in three weeks. State probably feels like they gave it away with the strikeout wild pitches and missed pop up. You also wonder if the slow start was a little bit of a hangover from the UCLA game. But obviously USM is just flat out very good, too.

The catcher defense issues are a little more forgivable given the context that Milewski is injured, we learned last night. But you can point to wild pitches / passed balls as arguably being the difference in both of State’s losses.

So Miss can for sure get to Omaha, but for everyone who thinks that they are about to go say 46-8 in a 54 game regular season, needs to put the brakes on. Baseball is a game that can humble you quickly. All it takes is one unlucky bounce to go against you.  41-13 is my prediction. In fact I think MSU and Ole Miss all win 40 in the regular season

This was as good of a mid-week game as you will see. Minus the week end pitchers, both were impressive.

Miss State's 1-9 lineup should match up with the best in the country, and USM's bullpen has been deep

and very good all year. In the 3-run 7th when MS took the lead, the flare pop-up that fell down the left field

line probably should have been an out but that's baseball. Would love to see both in Omaha.

That was a tough turn around for USM after the Tuesday night game. I'm sure the players were pretty amped up

From beating MS. But, no excuses,  you have to be ready to play. That's 2 years in a row for Nicholls beating USM.

I try to be as objective as possible, but when you see certain things happening twice or more, that to me constitutes

a trend. Starting a weekend rotation pitcher, squeeze bunting every time you get a runner on 3rd,..etc etc.

is kinda Bush league to me. Certainly not illegal though, but we all know there are unwritten rules in baseball.

May sound like sour grapes, but I really don't care. I have seen ALOT of baseball in over 50 years, guess I'm just

old school on that sorta stuff. May be time to tell Nicholls thanks, but no thanks, go play at Baton Rogue

in the midweek.

Nicholls beat Tulane last week. Most smaller schools can beat one of the bigger boys in a one game scenario.

Lipsomb was competitive with State tonight and I think they had 12 hits.
Not surprising at all that USM lost. They were going to be flat as a pancake after the win over State.

Early trend I’m monitoring with State is the bullpen. I’m not sounding full on alarm bells yet, but there are some shaky qualities to it and still certainly a lot to prove once you get late in tight games.

I would agree with you.

We don’t have a Jonathan Holder or Landon Sims type guy. When you brought those guys in it was over for the other team.

This appears to be a bullpen by committee. Which as you noted, in tight games, can be very worrisome.

But we will see if someone emerges in the days ahead to be that shut down pitcher.

I think Davis will be largely fine. Webb had been really good until last night but Lipscomb was teeing off on him, I wonder if him pitching three games in a row had his stuff less sharp yesterday.

The good news for weekends is that your Friday and Saturday starters have been excellent so far. Time will tell on Sunday, curious to see what Stone does this week. But I do have a little bit of unease about what happens if State’s offense starts slow like it has the last three games. This team can really hit but some nights it’s just not gonna happen, and can your pen rescue the day consistently?

One of the CB gurus was poo pooing midweek losses on STM the other day. But losing OOC games can cost you a Regional Host or a top 8 seed. You can afford a few but if you already have 5-6-7 losses before conference play starts, you are already behind the proverbial 8 ball. These OOC games are crucial to being considered for top 16 or 8 seed.

It absolutely cost State on more than one occasion in prior years. Teams that won 17 or 18 SEC games got shipped on the road for Regionals because they took half a dozen bad nonconference losses.

state must play better overall especially vs good teams.   so far they've faced 2 good teams and have two 1 run losses due to lack of focus in crunch time.   Not sure what is going on with Bianco, who doesn't seem to even have a SS on the team.

Gotta give kudos to all the MS teams for largely handling their business against lesser opponents in nonconference. Evidently that has not been the case at other top programs.

Here is a fun stat for you:

State, OM, and USM combined - 6 losses

Vanderbilt - 7 losses

LSU - 5 losses

State could really use a good showing from Charlie Foster tonight. They’ll use multiple pitchers I’m sure, but Foster is the guy State most needs to figure it out in order for them to reach their full potential.

I’m fascinated by OM-USM. Similar to last week, not a make or break game for either, but would further solidify USM or be a big boost for OM’s resume early on.

Hopefully Foster can have a quality start tonight.  It's a sellout crowd tonight, so hopefully he can try to put the emotions aside and take it one pitch at a time.  It'll be a good night for baseball.

yes, 2 good mid week games. USM bullpen didn't have to cover a whole lot of innings

over the weekend. Coach Oz should have pretty much everyone available other than

the 3 weekend starters. He used 9 guys in both the Alabama and Miss State mid week

games, so may see something like that again.

Phenomenal week for baseball with the WBC and a couple good series this weekend

Southern should handle Ark State

Ole Miss is a little better than what they’re given credit for, they could make for a tough series with Texas

Arkansas has a couple ugly losses so far, and we look really good. Looking to see how our bullpen holds up in a series against a good team. But I’m pretty confident we’ll take this one
