CFB Week 8 Thread

Believe this is the first time ever in the 16 team SEC era where every team is playing a conference game. Should make for a full and interesting day.

 

Ole Miss at Georgia -7.5: I have questions about both teams and don’t feel super confident either way on this. Obviously an enormous opportunity game for Ole Miss that would put them in a clear driver’s seat position for both the Playoff and likely a spot in Atlanta, too. I’m going to stick to my usual instinct of when in doubt, ride with the home team. Unless your name is Alabama, it’s been extremely tough for teams to beat UGA in Athens. I have Georgia winning something like 27-20.

 

State at Florida -9.5: I need to know State’s injury status to have any feel for this game. Fluff is out, don’t know yet on Reese or Isaac Smith. If those two are healthy, I think State has a real chance. I’m going to make my prediction based on the assumption they play, so anything I say is moot if they’re out. I have no clue how the Napier rumors impact this game either. For now, I think I’m picking State to win this. I think they will likely be the more motivated team and if they can get an early lead, the boo birds in the Swamp may come out. I think this ends up being an ugly game either way, but I have State taking this 19-14.

 

Tennessee at Bama -7.5: I like both of these teams quite a bit, but DeBoer has yet to lose a game in Tuscaloosa, so I’m taking the Tide to win and cover.

 

LSU at Vandy -2.5: take the names off the jerseys here, I think Vandy has legitimately just been the better team so far. Dores win and cover, and the Brian Kelly chatter heats up.

 

OU -5.5 at South Carolina: this game is probably going to be gross, but I think OU is decent and SC not particularly good. Sooners win and cover.

A&M -7.5 at Arkansas: think this is a bad matchup for the Hogs. Aggies win by double digits.

 

Texas -12.5 at Kentucky: that’s a weird stadium to play in, especially at night, and Texas hasn’t played in it before. I think the Horns win but it’s closer than most would think.

 

Mizzou -1.5 at Auburn: both teams wasted golden opportunities last week. I’m going to take Auburn at home here. I’m in a similar spot with Mizzou as I was some of the better Mark Stoops Kentucky teams. Prove to me you can go win a road game like this and that you’re not just a beneficiary of your schedule.

Hate to say it but this Ole Miss team just doesn’t have the talent this year to compete with Georgia. I got Georgia rushing for 150+ and winning by 2 TDs. But, Lane Kiffin can out coach anybody on any given day. He’s the X-Factor here.  But as a safe pick, I got UGA 35 - OM 21

 

Bama -7.5 is an accurate spread. Bama keeps on rolling 40-30

 

State - Florida. The OLine injuries killed States offense against A&M. I think States 1 good recruiting class from being in the middle tier of SEC teams. Next year will be the blossom year for State. With this game being at the swamp, and Florida looking better lately, Florida 24 State 14

 

Mizzou -1.5 at Auburn. Last weeks game may have imploded this Auburn team. Apparently there’s also been a lot of drama around one of the captains being released from the team. Hugh’s time in Auburn may be done. Mizzou 28- Auburn 14

Reese and Smith both listed as probable for State now. Encouraging,. We will see if it can make a difference.

 

Phenomenal uni matchup in the swamp tomorrow, IMO. State going back to the all white interlocking helmet look, Florida wearing some pretty sharp throwback uni’s.

It just doesn't need to be the same outcome as it was in 2001.  Should have worn the Maroon interlocking helmet.

The speculation has been they are planning on re-debuting it next week for the Texas game at home.

 

If Florida beats State 52-0 on Saturday like they did in 2001, I may just have to pick up a new fall hobby for the rest of my life.

Big upset to start the weekend, Louisville knocks off number 2 Miami on the road. I am not sure there is a more untrustworthy blue blood out there than The U.

Very rare occurrence when all 16 SEC teams are playing each other on the same Saturday. Hopefully it will happen more often in the future. Just makes for a cool day of football. Louie-Ville beating Miami of Florida was not that big of a surprise. I don’t see any team making through unscathed this year. 

So here goes nothing:

 

Ole Miss @ Georgia. I think Georgia has been living on borrowed time. They were a missed a FG away from losing to Tenner. Then the SEC officials gift wrapped them the win last Saturday. And I am sure they will do their best to ensure that GA wins tomorrow against Ole Miss. Ole Miss has the ability to beat Jawja. But I don’t really trust them to actually do so. All that to say, I think the Kirby cracks become a fissure tomorrow and their voodoo runs out. Ole Miss 29, Georgia 27.

 

State@ Florida. This game has the same vibe of the 2010 game (that I was at) when we beat FL 10-7 in the Swamp. Florida’s situation can cut two ways. 1. Team comes out swinging and they land early haymakers against State and they win 31-20. 2. Team is in a bit of disarray because of all the rumors running rampant around the program. If that is the case, look for State to win an ugly game 20-16.

 

3. TN@Bama. Going to ride with the Tide in a shootout. Bama gets a few more stops and wins 42-31.

 

4. Louisiana State at Vanderbilt. Conventional wisdom says take LSU. But this year is different. This is not your dad’s or grandfather’s Vandy. I am going to take Vandy. 23-14.

 

5. Oklahoma @ SCAR … OK is in for a (oops I hit the send button accidentally) long night. SC takes an ugly but much needed win 25-12.

 

6. A&M at Arkansas…A&M dominant’s defensively and wins going away 38-14.

 

7.  TX at KY. I agree with 83 that this will be a tricky game for TX. TX eeks out a win 17-14. 
 

8. Missouri at Auburn. I am not sure about either of these teams. I am picking Auburn to lose and Missouri not to lose. nrubuA 16, iruossiM 28. 
 

And that is the way it is tonight October 17 , the night before the best Saturday of the season.

Ole Miss offense literally throwing a perfect game through the first 40 minutes.

 

This State and Florida game is an abomination of the sport of football. Both QB’s have been absolutely atrocious and State also had a big red zone fumble.

Big win for Georgia, but what Kiffin has done at OM is amazing.  They’re a playoff contender and SECC contender as long as he’s there.  Giving UGA all they can handle on the road, and they more than likely are at worst a 10-2 team.

I am at a loss for words for how State just lost.

 

You did the hard part. Got it in makeable field goal range for a good kicker. Center it and kick it. That’s all you had to do. But no, let’s drop back and throw a dumb INT when the ball didn’t need to be in the air.

 

State fans are the grudge holding type and that’s the kind of loss people are going to hold against Lebby for a while.

 

As a State fan my blood is boiling.

For OM, nothing to feel bad about. Played great football for 3 quarters, I just felt like UGA’s advantage in the trenches and the homefield effect really kicked in during the 4th.

 

That game in Norman is enormous for OM, arguably even bigger than today was. Extremely fascinating game.

 

I have no freaking clue what to expect from State-Texas other than a lot of empty seats combined with burnt orange in the stands.

This game really deflates you. 
First, Florida said here we are giving you the game.

And then we do everything right. 
until the last play. 
Plenty of time. I am just totally baffled.

And I should correct myself.

Kiffin several years ago. I think he has improved greatly over the last 2-3 years.

And you are correct. Ole Miss just ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. But still a well played game nonetheless.

Texas and Kentucky tied in the 4th. As frustrating as the loss today was, how can you not think that’s a game that should be close in Starkville next weekend?

 

I kinda assume State will find a way to lose it, but that’s not really the point.

 

The media was way off on Texas in the preseason. They’re not very good.

Daniel Hill’s a truck. Hope his brother sticks with State. Wasn’t their father a freakishly good player too??

He is a truck. Wished he would have gone to State. He is basically stuck as a reserve at Bama.But glad to see him get some action tonight. 

His Dad , Demetrius Hill was the best High School defensive player I have ever seen play. Period.

He anchored the Meridian High 1985 defense that had 9 shutouts, outscored the other teams for the year 37-34. Also were the only team to hold Starkville RB David Fair to under 100 yards twice. Regular season and again in the State Championship game that year. 
He played DT and had an incredible combination of strength, agility and speed. He was virtually unblockable. So Daniel definitely comes from good DNA.

Texas D has the middle totally stacked and what do you do. Run twice up the middle. Got to have some kind of RPO there.

Daniel’s emerging as the #2 for Bama. So I’d expect him to get more meaningful time as the year goes on.

 

Also that’s interesting about their father. I knew he coached at Meridian and had heard he was a good ball player.

Found an article on him from 1986.

I think he suffered from dyslexia and back in 1970’s-80’s, and the diagnosis and treatment were not nearly as good then as they are today. Obviously that negatively affected his academics. As a result he went to a Juco in Kansas and then to State for two years.
