There were a ton of problems with this game, but you could tell Barbay needed to let Will do his thing sooner rather than later. Arnett needs to have a powwow with Barbay. Dawg83
Oh State definitely looked pretty rough. I thought Barbay’s plan on offense was really weird and insanely vanilla for a close game (until the TD in overtime which I thought was a really nice play design). But it’s also Week 2 and teams get better over the course of the year. I’m sorry, you can’t play 4 quarters and OT and only have Will Rogers throwing 15 passes. And the utilization of Wright was really odd tonight. Stuff like that has to get fixed quick. I’ll go ahead and tell you that I am not picking State to beat LSU next week (probably wasn’t before tonight). But I don’t think one clunker win means State is necessarily going to be a bad team. If anything, the definition of “good team” is VERY fluid in the SEC right now. Name one team other than Georgia who doesn’t have some notable questions… I mean you really can’t. It’s like they forget about him, then they're like, “oh, hey we haven’t used Mike yet” Arizona tightened up against the run and made Rogers move and the play calling has to adjust to that. Thought it was a little bit of an arrogant gameplan by Barbay. State ran the ball well early and they just kept doing the same thing even after Arizona adjusted. State will not win 6 games if the lack of offensive creativity you saw tonight doesn’t improve. But I don’t think Arnett and Barbay are idiots, either. There are things State can do well on offense, gotta do a better job of not being so single-minded.
Bulldogs4
First give Arizona credit. They are a good team and they are going to beat more teams this year than they lose to. De Lora is a shifty QB but he hurts himself with turnovers. 4 INT’s tonight negated a 32-46 performance with 300+ yards passing. Interesting that he was originally signed by Mike Leach when he was the coach at Wazzou. State has a lot work to do. I have been cautioning everyone that our offense is still a work in progress. In my original analysis, I said we needed to cash in on our scoring opportunities. We did not in the first half. We got stopped on 4th and goal and we missed a FG. We should have been up 24-0 or at worst 20-0 in the second quarter. So that was a huge key in letting AZ stay in the game. And to their credit, they came back and got the game to OT. At the end of the night we found a way to win the game. For AZ, though they outplayed us particularly in the second and fourth quarters, it is hard to win a game when you turn the ball over 5 times. State had zero turnovers. And the correct call was made on the fourth down play that ended the game. Gut wrenching loss for AZ but a good win for State and I think it will be a win that is going to look better at the end of the season. Dawg83
May be in the minority on this but I thought Arizona went too conservative on their last drive in the 4th when they had State on the ropes. Letting the clock run down and playing for the tying field goal instead of going for the win right then and there? I know they had a 4th and short but they had ALL the momentum and State couldn’t stop them on the perimeter. I think as a road underdog you’ve gotta shoot your shot there. Instead it goes to OT and State is able to regroup and close it out.
Bulldogs4
Good observation there. Fish may have been concerned with De Lora throwing a late pick. He can be great and terrible QB on the same play. But you are right. They kind of started playing not to lose instead of trying to win the game. For State, great call on the screen pass and Pittman breaking the tackle and going to the house was a bit of redemption for the offense. Defense played well overall against a very good offensive team. Offensively, we are still figuring things out. Which is understandable. The problem in football is you only have twelve regular season games to play. So opportunities are limited. Obviously, the task gets harder this coming Saturday. Going back to my picks. I was almost spot on with Ole Miss-Tulane 37-20 (42-24). Otherwise, I crapped out on State, USM, Bama, Colorado. Colorado has earned some accolades and we will see how they fare going forward. Dawg83
I haven’t talked about the OM game much. I only got watch the first half and they had some real problems. Obviously had a good second half. Dart looks improved but I have questions about the o-line and think the receivers are just OK. Defensively they’re obviously not a disaster but it’s hard to judge this performance given that Tulane was without Michael Pratt who is a very good QB. Bulldogs4
Well I enjoyed a nice adult beverage when we got back home from the State game (about midnight) and saw the last six minutes of Auburn/Cal game. At least Auburn and State rendered the PAC-12 from the unbeaten ranks this weekend. Did not get hammered though I slept very after I went to bed…LOL
