Are players allowed to follow coaches who move from school to local school?

David, I condemn both. I said in an earlier post it is wrong what Pennock and Green are doing. The MHSAA NEEDS to step in! I hope OS calls them on it at the state office. This coming from an Admiral alum! My point is the fact that OS fans, not just you, but others on social media as well are acting as if they should be the biggest victims of all in the situation and I just view it as hypocritical. Sure, nobody has went to the MHSAA about it with OS, but that does not mean it is not happening and I know as connected as you are in the community, you have heard or know some of what has gone on. As far as kids transferring out, som coaches have the philosophy of the kid does not want to be here, then let him go. Which is probably the case and why nothing has been said on it at OS or any other school. I hope Pennock get burned on this. I hope it puts a target on him and the program because it is long past due for this behavior to be dealt with. You are a true fan and I know it is frustrating.

Thanks for being a stand up guy, even for an Admiral. I’m taking this a little lesson in learning. Never post a topic that you’re not sure makes you look good. Of course, I’m right, but there’s other ways to look at this too. Good discussion. We’ll do it again when there’s actually some football to talk about.

Grown men should not be allowed to court 14-17 year old kids for their own benefit... whether they are attention seeking or not.  Kids are easily manipulated and allowing this is creepy and immoral.  (Accepted or not)  Teenage boys are just as impressionable as teenage girls and need to protected in the same manner.  These are kids not commodities.

I hate that I missed out on this discussion and just saw it. Just as a heads up, said player was told last Monday that he is not eligible to play at Gulfport. The OS administration did not have anything to do with it. Apparently almost every other 7A  school on the south side lodged a complaint with the state. His options are extremely limited now.

Before some of y'all jump all over me, it's one thing working in the gray areas getting kids to come in to a program. It happens all over the state. Blatantly trying to openly violate the rules is a completely different aspect. I can list several kids on the coast that have lived in one city that play at a different school all over including at OS.

I also wish that you had been able to take part in this discussion. You seem to have some inside points of view that are knowledgeable.  I’ve been saying the same thing for a month now, that parents moving into a new district for their child’s welfare is different than a coach moving, then trying to bring some of his best players with him. I’m glad that the state is getting involved so that nobody has to be a snitch. I would hope that the new coaching staff and administration in O.S. are not opposed to the player returning to their school and team if it’s in the best interest of the kid.

They aren't but there are some other hoops he would have to jump through before that happens, especially after the Social Media posts and such.  Most believe that he's headed to HC. Apparently he was being given extremely bad info by the coaches at his new school. He was reported to the state, just not by OS personnel. The rest of the south part of 7A took care of it.

So is this kid that good of a player for all these 7a schools to report him

You guys may get your starting LB back. Well done.

From what I was told, MHSAA rules prevent you from transferring out from your home school to another district, then transferring from there to another district and then trying to come back. The only school he could play at this season is his home school, which is Harrison Central.

Yeah, probably one of the top defensive players in the state, with offers from many of the usual Power 5 programs and a 3 star ranking that’s set to go up. That’s why I was so disappointed to see him being influenced to leave our program when we were so excited about our chance to be a good defense. We still have a lot of talent, and I for one would be glad to see him back in the dressing room, if only because he would also enhance his chances of being recruited. I’ve never tried to hide my aversion to the past coach and coordinator giving him bad advice, and probably came off as bitter. I’m still not happy seeing this kid end up being hurt. Hoping that he comes out of this situation the best way possible.

I hate to hear this for the kid. He's obviously being led around by adults who don't truly have his best interest in mind and are willing to break rules that  put his senior year in jeopardy. Sounds like the coach's goal was to weaken the team he left more than it was to provide an environment for this young man to show case his talent for his senior year.  In that case, I guess he wins either way.

I do not hate to hear for this kid. My kids told me he was messaging several other high school coaches on the coast about playing for their programs. You can see his social media posts he is very much a "me" guy who wants attention. He does not appear to have much loyalty. If I was Harrison Central, I do not know if I would want him back.

The answer is no, they cannot move to follow their coach to a new school. From the 2022-23 MHSAA Handbook:

3.1.5 A student transferring from one member school to another shall be ruled ineligible for one calendar year from the date of enrollment because of “undue influence” if any of the following situations exist:

1. It is determined that a coach, including non-faculty, of the receiving school coached an out of-school team on which the athlete played within the past twelve (12) months.

2. It is determined that a coach, including non-faculty, at the receiving school acted as a private athletic instructor for the transferring athlete, regardless of whether the coach was paid for his/her services and/or expertise.

3. It is determined the transferring student played on an out-of-school team made up of a simple majority of students from the receiving school.

4. A student transfers to a new school within one calendar year of the relocation of his/her coach, including non-faculty, to that school.

3.1.6 Article 3.1.5 (1-4) shall be enforced even in the event the student made a bona-fide move into the receiving school’s attendance zone.

What would happen by chance if the student moved first and then the coach went to that school? For example: the parent of a player gets a job offer from another city and they move away to another school. After they move that football job from his new school comes open and his old coach applies there and gets the job. Now the player and his parents moved first. In my opinion that player should be allowed to play.

That is a really interesting questions. I would imagine it comes down to time of enrollment. If the player is enrolled BEFORE the coach comes over, I would imagine they should be eligible.

Correct. Just say the parent lets his kids finish school until Christmas Break. He enrolls them  in January at their new school. That football position comes open in February his former coach applies and gets it. That player was there before the coach. He should definitely be eligible to play the next school yr.

I don’t think that the kid should suffer either if the parents make the decision independent of the football situation and it can be shown that there was no collusion on the part of the coach involved. In the case we’re seeing here, I’m not at all sure that the coaches, having been contacted about changing schools, didn’t go straight to some of the better players or their parents  with a plan to transfer. I don’t have inside knowledge of what I’m saying, and should let this topic come to an end, but the lack of concern for a teenager’s choices is just plain wrong. I’ve been told that I shouldn’t blame the coach for taking a larger paycheck, and I now agree, but the other actions are certainly concerning. Now, I’m ready to talk some actual football. Ocean Springs has finally put out their upcoming schedule, and we’ll have enough to worry about once that kicks off.

Why would the coaches or the players in the locker room want someone that didn't want to play for/with them?

That does seem to be the mindset of the staff from what I’m hearing, yet I’m still hopeful that this teenager gets some kind of lesson in this, and can find a place to play. He’s made a mistake, or been led astray, but shouldn’t be kept from being given a chance to redeem himself and his college aspirations. Probably not O.S., but somewhere. Good luck to him.
