If the inter squad scrimmages are any indication, State either has a great offense or their pitching staff is going to really struggle again.

Probably some truth on both sides there.

I certainly hope that's not an indicator of how things will be in the regular season.  If the offensive output is just plain better, I'll take that by a country mile.  Now if the pitching ain't gonna get no better then that's not good.  I think Lemonis will feel the pressure if the pitching staff can't throw strikeouts.

I think there were close to 20 walks combined in one of the scrimmages this weekend.

There is zero chance Lemonis is fired this year if State sucks again. I continue to believe that. You’re just not firing a national title winning coach two years later. But Foxhall likely can’t afford another bad year.

I continue to believe State will be better, but I absolutely believe their ceiling is limited by the pitching. Everything I’ve gathered so far is that they’ll be relying heavily on some of these transfers to be good. Gartman, Dohm, Nixon, Davis, etc. And maybe one or two of the freshman/JUCO guys. State will go as they go, because I don’t have much confidence in the returning pitching outside of maybe Cade Smith. But even he is no Landon Sims or Ethan Small type lights out guy.

I think Foxhall is a good pitching coach. When you lose 4 pitchers to injuries during a season that is a difficult thing to overcome. Throw in the fact that our offense was terrible. We were Dave Kingman offensively. We hit about .213 with 50 solo home runs and about 200 strike outs. Then add in that we were the defending National champions. Add all that up and we were like the cowboy who was staked to desert sand and had molasses poured all over him. We were devoured by anyone and everyone we played especially at the end of the season.

All that to say, IMO, we will be much better this season. Using a single preseason scrimmage to predict the season is about the most lousy correlation I have ever heard in my life.

So the defending National Champs are picked BY THE COACHES to finish 4th in the SECW and the previous defending champs (3 out of the last 4 years in the CWS) are picked 7th.  Even behind Bama.

I wouldn’t put a whole lot of stock into a preseason ranking.  It’s mainly a bunch of rubbish anyway and besides it’s freaking baseball.  Who honestly knows at this point who will get hot in May & June.  Those cats would be better off sitting around a campfire with a bottle of J.W. Dant to accompany them.

But it was the coaches picking these.   Of course State did hit rock bottom last year and OM was the last team in the NCAAT and some wanted the coach gone during the SECT.
I’m not really familiar with what teams lost what or gained what, but the coaches also didn’t give much respect to Auburn, who made the CWS last year, by voting them 6th in the West, but they seemed high on A&M after making the CWS last year.  A&M was picked 2nd and had one 1st place vote.

The SECW is truly unpredictable in baseball. Every team except Alabama is capable of winning the division and possibly going to Omaha. And Alabama has certainly improved over the last few years. The difference between 7th and 1st could be pretty slim this year.
I am glad State is picked Seventh. After last season that is where we deserve to be until we prove differently.

I honestly feel LSU is the clear favorite in the West. And 2-7 is a crapshoot that could go anyway.

Not exactly a hot take here but I expect everybody to be chasing LSU and Tennessee all year. LSU is loaded but I may actually like Tennessee slightly more based on the starting pitching they bring back.

Arkansas lost a projected weekend starter for the year yesterday.

Does anyone have high expectations for Southern this year? what are the feelings going into this season?

Yes, they should be a Super Regional or Omaha contender again. Losing Waldrep to Florida stings, but there’s a lot to like about them.

Well State was picked seventh and finished sixth.

So the prognosticators were correct there.
They were definitely wrong on Ole Miss.

And we all thought State would surely be better but alas we were just as bad this year as we were last year.
Ole Miss going 6-24 in the league was not expected at all. I thought they would be at least a middle of the league team.

My line of thinking on State was right, I thought their pitching would be a problem again, but it ended up being a way worse problem than I expected.

The collapse of Ole Miss is maybe the most surprising thing I’ve seen in-state in the 20+ years I’ve followed college baseball. Even moreso than USM getting to Omaha in 2009 or Ole Miss winning it all last year. A Mike Bianco team having a 6-24 conference record was something I never thought I’d see.

Feel like I was pretty much right on USM. They had a very good year and are one of the strongest 2 seeds in the field.
