If State were to get a QB from the portal before they get an OC then so be it. I think they would prefer things to be the other way around, but sometimes you can't control those things. They'll get an OC soon enough. as long as its not Spurrier JR

Dawg83
Looking like State has its new AD, Zac Selmon from Oklahoma. Don’t know a ton about him other than he’s a young up and comer (I think he’s 37) and his dad and uncles are the famous Selmon brothers that played at OU. He would also be the first African American AD in State’s history. I think it may be beneficial for State to have someone with an outsider’s perspective and not heavy MSU ties like the last couple of AD’s. Is he the leading candidate for OC?
maroontide06
The Barbay hire must be final because his Bio has been taken off of the App State athletics page.

I think he’s basically accepted the job. Good reputation as a play caller. The analytics guys love him, apparently he has had one of the more efficient offenses in the country. Was the OC at Central Michigan before moving to App State. I don’t know just a ton about him but I think I like the hire.
MSTSatchmo
I see some State fans complaining that he runs the ball more than passing. Obviously they’re concerned that the roster is built for Leach’s offense that threw it, I read, 400 more times than designed runs. It will be interesting to see what State does in the portal going forward.

State is traditionally known for having better success in the run game than they are in the passing game anyway. This might be the time we see another QB like Dak or Fitz to run the offense
maroontide06
Is Coach Washington going to remain on staff? If so, that's good news to my ears. He's such a nice man. Me and my boy met him on the sideline at the Long Beach game when he came to do some recruiting and he could have talked to us forever. He is so down to earth and I hope we can keep him. It was the games where Rogers threw 60+ passes where they’d have issues. I loved Mike Leach and always will, but there’s a reason his disciples aren’t nearly as pass heavy as he was. Some balance is essential in today’s era of football.
maroontide06
Will Mississippi State hire an assistant coach to coach safeties or will that fall under Arnett? From what I've heard the plan is to move Tony Hughes back to the offensive side of the ball and coach tight ends.

My understanding is the plan is likely to promote Brett Dewhurst from analyst to safeties coach. He’s got some previous experience as a DB coach. The biggest question now is whether or not they retain Jason Washington or try to hire a new RB coach. I personally would like to see Washington stay. Dawg83
Pete Golding leaving Bama to take the DC job at Ole Miss. Boy oh boy will there be some mixed opinions on this one. I feel like Ole Miss fans will see this as an upgrade from their previous arrangement, and that may end up being true. But Bama fans HATED Golding. What I’m unclear on is if this is due to some legitimate gripes or if Bama fans are just crazy and he’s an easy person to blame. We will find out though, won’t we? Most Bama fans didn’t like Golding. But he was also replacing Kirby. It will be interesting to see how Golding does without the pressure of being under Saban. It can’t be easy to be a DC with Saban looking over your shoulder.

Based on a statistical standpoint, Golding’s numbers are comparable previous Bama DC’s. Not at the insanely elite level Kirby’s defenses were, but still really good. My guess is his detractors will tell you that most of his successes were due to a big talent advantage and not his game planning. And they’d also point out that he laid some eggs in very big games. Tennessee this year, A&M last year, the title game against Clemson and a freshman Trevor Lawrence several years ago. Heck, even Ole Miss and Kiffin had some pretty strong offensive showings against Golding. I get it, and it’s a name that people know. But it’s a huge contract for a guy with a lot of question marks. I’m not sure Ole Miss ends up getting the ROI on this one. But I could absolutely be off base there.
MSTSatchmo
I had heard Golding was on the verge of being replaced. I don’t know what happened with that, because it would have more than likely been done right after the bowl game.
MSTSatchmo
So the same day State welcomes their new OC, their most explosive player enters the portal. That’s a tough one.

rebmus
With all due respect to Chris Partridge, I don't see how anyone can't view this as an upgrade at DC right now.
Dawg83
More portal fun, Ole Miss has a defensive starter enter the portal on the same day the Grove Collective announced a new deal with him. I can’t be the only one rolling my eyes at all this. If we’re trying to turn this into pro football I think I’ll just stick to the NFL where the quality of play is higher and there’s more parity. I’m for players getting paid, but they need to sign contracts just like the NFL now. If the player or the school don’t honor the contract they’ll have to deal with whatever the consequences are. Since NIL deals can't be made for recruiting purposes (wink wink), can that really be a lawsuit for backing out? I have no idea, but it sure is complicated. I'm with you, I'm all for the players getting paid. The NFL model has salary caps and a players' union, with huge fines for anyone not following specific rules that are enforced equally with all teams/players. I'm leaning we're getting close to 2 (maybe 4??) "super conferences" breaking away from the NCAA for football and doing their own thing similar to the NFL model. It has to lead to that. I didn’t want college ball to turn into NFL ball, but that’s the only solution at this point.
