slicklizard
West Point vs One play Gautier Grenada vs Hattiesburg The real game should be West Point vs Hattiesburg. Instead of flexing muscle and running through this weak field Wayne County fell down to the level of the other sad sacks.Same with Laurel. We used to be in the region with West Jones, Brookhaven, Picayune and Hattiesburg. They destroyed these must see games and road trips with this expansion of classes. Now we play Morton and Sand Fly Alabama instead.Even the title games in 6A and 5A are unattractive and competitive mismatches. Was there ever a reason given for them doing this ? Could anything different have been done? Couldn’t be that much more money involved with the addition of one more title game. It looks like some people were trying to justifying their position by doing something. “Look what we did boss “.

Dubaction
Yea I wanna go ahead and say congrats to WP on the next 10 years of state titles. The real teams the south has to offer right now within their realm are all in 6A.
GTownDanger06
West Point wouldn’t beat Grenada. Sorry Slick I know that sounds logical but Grenada would win that game 9 out of 10 times. I’ve seen both teams play. Grenada would win that game. All we have to go by would be common opponents. (Neshoba vs WP 21-7, Clarksdale vs WP 21-0 both were 4 qtr games/Neshoba vs Grenada 31-7 and should have been worse, Clarksdale vs Grenada 28-0 in a half during the Jamboree) Grenada would beat WP sorry Slick take that complaint down the road Edited December 3, 2024 by GTownDanger06 Typo

If not, then yes they'll won't have to worry about losing a 5A title for a very, very long time.

Adding an extra class created an additional 15 playoff games for the state to make money. Just in football. More playoff games = more money. It was done to serve 2 purposes. 1. Bring in more money. 2. Appease the old 6A teams who were crying about the enrollment disparity between the top and bottom of 6A. Slick, it seems times are very changing and society is gearing toward making everyone feel all warm and fuzzy inside. LOL

Then get your feelings hurt when someone doesn’t agree with that. My opinion on why 7 classifications helps in some cases (mainly larger classes) is because if there were still 6 classifications a school like Grenada that has 783 students would be in division with Tupelo that has 1542 students there closest enrollment competition would be Starkville with 1074 students. If that is the real reason I would like to see the numbers from it. I bet if you put pen to paper it was close to when it was six classes . I noticed last season. A lot of teams had freaking losing records and only had to win a couple games to get in. Those teams don’t draw enough people to cover, lights, staff, ref crews plus liability for all that . Not even for the home teams. Especially the first round. I haven’t dug into but I never heard anything coming out of the meeting this present year. 25 minutes ago, GTownDanger06 said: You threw it out there that West Point vs Hattiesburg is the “real” matchup. I guess I could have put the real championship game should have been Gautier vs Grenada but I wouldn’t want to wat that either. . Plus you didn’t put any reason why they changed the number of classifications. It looked like that you didn’t see Grenada in the mix and you immediately reacted. I don’t need convincing one way or the I think what I think based on what I’ve seen. I watched a couple of y’all’s games on YouTube and this season doesn’t really look much different than last year. What do you mean with those numbers because I legit don’t follow. What was Grenada two seasons ago ? thought they were in old 5A. Starkville and Tupelo were in old 6A you saying same division as them is why I’m puzzled on it

Grenada has roughly 290 students less than the next closest team based on enrollment which would be Starkville. Grenada struggles to compete in that division but still managed to make playoffs most years. Asking them to compete year after year there would be the same as throwing Poplarville in the current 6A class and expecting them to compete.

Nothing to argue about there. Yall have dominated us traditionally (Grenada has a 14-21 all time record vs WP). Even in 2002 when we dropped to 4A yall beat us 10-3 at Grenada in North Half. I think we can both agree that this years West Point team is down compared to some of those teams you’re talking about that beat our HC when at Lafayette. We can also agree that our HC didn’t have the talent at Lafayette County that he has at Grenada either. I would love to see WP vs Grenada every year. It would be a slug fest. The number difference between the largest 6A and smallest 6A at the time was the reasoning. Now they have created schools unable to complete a 10 game schedule without driving 3 hrs on a we need you to play Thursday night. No refs.

We couldn’t get past the 2nd round for years and now we’re in the ship in back to back season with less talent than we had in any of the previous 5-10 years. Good luck Saturday I doubt Grenada would be where they are in 6 classifications because based on the cut line we would be in the higher class with Tupelo, Madison, Germantown, Starkville. It’s hard for us to compete as the smallest 6A. Although we beat Oxford, Clinton, Desoto Central those aren’t exactly powerhouses. Tupelo is on a whole different level.

It’s funny that West Point is “down” this year and playing for the championship. I watched Cleveland Central put up a heck of a fight and then West Point got that ball with 6:27 to go and did what they do and that was the ballgame. You’re also correct, Holmes County had them beat, but at the end of the game couldn’t run the ball to get a first down, had a terrible punt, and WP drove it 30 yards to take the lead. Say what you will, but those guys know how to win over there. 1
slicklizard
Whoever came up with five dam region games should have been laughed out of the room. A coach winning two or three region games and getting in the playoffs is just an excuse to keep loaf, lazy coaches around. Which may have been part of the thinking of doing it. It's already proven to be poorly thought out
