TigersFan
What happened to the days of playing football in the weather? All these people are moving games to different times and to stadiums with turf. I remember when I played we had a game that was supposed to be in the rain and the coach had a trash can full of water soaking balls so we could practice with them for when it rained that Friday night. Yes, it is uncomfortable for fans, Yes there maybe less fans there than a normal game, Yes, there are all the reasons in the world to justify moving a game. Guess I just remember the days of playing football on Friday nights no matter what the weather threw at you! Guess I am just getting old and a little bit of a Purest! JACKTOWN91
Well i think it's not as much the playing in the mud, but the destruction of the field. A grass field takes a beating from playing a game after getting 20 inches of rain in a week.
maroontide06
Grass is definitely the better playing surface regardless of weather condition, but there's a whole lot of schools in Mississippi that have poor grass fields. They don't have the proper drainage and they sometimes have massive bald spots where they put a bunch of sand to fill in the holes. I remember the last year we had grass at Picayune and how bad the field looked. We used to have this old school crown in the middle of the field so that the rain water would slope to drains near the track. Heck, I even remember when we had an old school clay track that was recessed with curbs and when it rained it turned into a pond. If a grass field has the proper drainage and irrigation, then there's no problem with them anytime of year, but that tends to be more of an exception and not the norm.

Back in the day players used to love having that one bad weather game where it was hard rain and mud. Three games in particular stick out from watching Hattiesburg play in the rain and mud. One game vs Natchez in Vidalia LA where at one part of the field the ball literally floated when the umpire placed it. He had to keep his hand on the ball to keep it from moving. Second game was when HHS upset Wayne Co the year they won state and third game was at Terry where the week before HHS had just upset Oak Grove and Terry beat HHS 13-0. HHS fumbled 3 times inside their own 20 yd line and Terry kicked two field goals and scored a TD. Terry wound up with maybe 50yds of total offense and HHS may not have gotten that.
Wcchaingang
I think a lot of it is coaches not wanting to trash the first game of the season and it being messed up the whole year. Back in the day there were no other alternatives do you had to suffer through it. Thankfully we have turf and can offer it to other schools to use. As hyped up as laurel and hattiesburg have been on here, only thing that would make it better would be playing in the mud. If it gets to that point, I will send down our family photographer to take the coolest pictures in the state

U Remember When
I almost posted this topic yesterday just watching the green and red blobs creep across the radar. I was thinking in terms of the old idea that ball control, run heavy offenses are at an advantage over teams that throw 25-30 times a game. In my mind, advantage goes to teams who may not have speed burners, but have good size and went all in in the weight room. I know, anything can happen on a wet field.

At heart they are just country boys like us and we speak the same language . On the other hand without exception of maybe one or two I have never had an interaction with anyone from Laurel around their football team or games that wasnt some kind of jerk. They used to have three or four old mudbone type drunks that would sit on the visitors side and make fun of the other teams kids. Fat, slow, big head everything under the sun. I havent seen them since a playoff game I went to there with Picayune and one of the kids mother was sitting right there. She got up a let them have it. She wouldnt stop . The security finally showed up and made Grady and his friends leave. It was a beautiful thing to see.

JagsFan77
Toughing it out in the mud is one thing. Playing on a rutted up field with missing chunks of grass for the following 4 to 6 weeks is another. People spend a lot of money on field prep to just tear it up for the sake of toughing it out. "Nope.... no new helmets next year.. we had to spend $10,000 on sod, seed, equipment, and labor resurfacing the field because we decided to prove we were tough." It's being a bad steward of the cost and effort someone put into the field just to ruin it.
