At the rate Meridian is dropping don't be surprised if they don't drop to 6A by the time this goes into effect. What about a division with Meridian, Hattiesburg, Wayne Co., West Jones, South Jones and either Laurel or Petal. However Laurel may be too small for 6A by then and Petal may be too large by then.

That is intriguing about Meridian. They would definitely make things interesting. Laurel, and South Jones are pretty much locks to stay 5A if they move to 7 classes. Wayne County would be a fringe team for 5A/6A. I wish there was more clear information available about what the April vote means. Sb live quotes the MHSAA Director stating it’s being voted in to put in place this year, but other news media says it’s the 2023 season.

The handbook is updated every two years after reclassification. With that being said it runs thru 22-23 school year. If it is changed for this fall then it has to read either 2022-2024 or 2022-2025. Otherwise all this goes into affect fall of 2023-24 normally. I think the committee wants to see on paper the current set up with current numbers.. Either way someone's traveling.. For example with current numbers Senatobia is the only 4A school in the NW. They will have to travel over to New Albany and Pontotoc or down to Yazoo City and Greenwood. Yazoo County, Yazoo City, and Greenwood are the only 3 in the southern Delta. That forces Kosciusko and Leake Central vs Lanier and Raymond moving into Region 3. It's going to be what it's going to be when it comes to travel. Most of the 4A schools appear to be in the south and in East side of state. I think they should ask for the 2021 numbers and see.

Meridian numbers from MDE:

           2020.              2021

9th.     351.               394

10th.   332.               335

11th.   317.               299

12th.    263.              263

Total.  1263.            1291

The 1263 is what is listed on reclassification list. Meridian is definitely trending down from grade to grade. They may very well drop if Middle School drops.

I’m willing to bet they have seen the numbers and know. I highly doubt the MHSAA would propose all this, accelerate a vote for April to potentially put it in place this year and then vote it down or to “see”. It would not surprise me at all fornthrm to have plan laid out and everything in place on paper ready to roll out. SBLive is an official partner with the MHSAA and MAC. I doubt they would post the story they did and it not be true. I think it’s all formality and it’s happening this year. I could be wrong, but math is math and it all adds up lol. Question will be, what numbers will they  use? The count done to set up regions for 2021-2023 or 2021 October count?

I just got thru looking at 2021-22 numbers bottom/top 8 of each class split roughly. There will be some surprises if they do it now. There will be a major shake up in 4A-2A.

Are you kidding me? You win 7A with these teams you’re gonna have to be pretty damn good to do it. It’s really no different from how it’s always been for the bigger schools. Idk why people are acting like this is such a huge change for the big boys. It’s not.

Agree. I’ve always thought it was dumb to even assume having the 6A vs 5A champ play each other. You’d have an issue with the other classifications too. You want there to be a playoff if state champs? It’s pretty obvious typically who would win.

You go from 7 region games to 5 region games. It's still going to be hard to win it all in each class.

I actually think you’re spot on.

I now wonder based on SB Live news that:

4A 40.     42

3A 40.     42

2A 40.     42

1A 51.     45

As to how the split will go.

If there are 51 left in 1A, then with 8 regions, you’d have 6 in each for 48 total. 3 of the 8 will have to have 7 teams in them, which isn’t too bad.

I am going with even split on 4A-1A

1A has 34 of 45 playing football

1A has 9 of 16 in NE Ms playing football
